March 31, 2011 - Which Came First......

The chicken or the egg?

In Granny's case, it was the egg. Mr. Granny is holding firm on "NO! We will not have chickens in our back yard!" I've told him the horror stories of the poor antibiotic filled hens that are mass producing the eggs he's been eating. I've tried to tell him how good the eggs would taste when laid by happy, free running hens, that were eating bugs and worms. I've touted how much more nutritious the eggs from free range hens are, in comparison to those from caged chickens. I begged for just three chickens. I was preaching to deaf ears.

So what was I to do? I'll tell you......I got me an "Egg Lady"!

I decided to check Craig's List for eggs from free range chickens. The very first one found sold eggs for $2.50 per dozen, and if I bought three dozen at once, she would include a dozen banty eggs for free. And they were delivered to the door! Well, I emailed her right away, and ordered three dozen eggs. The next day, the lady from Eggstravagant Eggs of Benton City, WA was at my front door with......

My lady came in with the big basket full of eggs, and with an extra half dozen "Because I'm late"! Aren't they gorgeous? The little blue Bantam egg is almost too pretty to eat, and the basket was included.

I guess it was just meant to be. It turns out her parents live right around the corner from us, Mr. Granny knows her father, and her brother used to work for us! I'm just happy to have found an affordable source for farm fresh eggs, two of which Mr. Granny is consuming right now.

  2. I know how you feel. K doesn't want chickens. But it looks like you are going to be much better off. Congrats on finding a great local Egg Lady!

  3. Hurray for you! I am in the same boat with wanting chickens, but the husband isn't going for it. I'm so glad you found some!

  4. Your beautiful gardens would no longer be beautiful if you had hens scratching around in them. We wanted to try letting our hens out to free range, but quickly decided my landscaping and flower beds would have been destroyed if anything was growing yet.

How wonderful to have them delivered right to your door! Such a perfect alternative.

  5. I've wanted to have a few chickens, too, but the stray dogs that cross my yard would make short work of them. I can buy locally produced eggs at the Farmer's Market if I get there early enough on Saturdays. Wish I had your kind of bounty.

  6. What a fabulous story and connection! Phooey on Mr Granny though for not wanting the chickens, if it were me, I'd not let him eat those pretties until he caved. ;)

  7. That sounds really great Granny! I needed to find another Egg Lady, I know there is a difference my egg ladies chickens stopped laying and she had to them in the freezer:o( , she will be starting up with more eggs as soon as the new ones start laying.

  8. We got ourselves a whole egg family we get eggs from. It would be nice to have the chicken manure for fertilizer, but this way I can go away for a few days and not have to find a chicken sitter!

  9. What would we do without you! I would have never thought to look on CL. That is a really good price for fresh eggs. At our FM they are $7.00 a dozen for large eggs and $4.50 for smaller ones.
I do have a friend that has chickens but she is an hour and a half away so I only get eggs from her when I go visit which is only a few times a year.
I'll have to see if I have an egg lady in my area.

  10. What is it with husbands and chickens? Mine says no, too.

  11. Granny - I read somewhere that chickens lay eggs for couple years and then nothing. I would really hate to kill them :(

Also, hard to go anywhere for a few days without a "chicken" sitter. They probably peck through and eat all the earthworms too! That would ruin your garden!!

I think that you have a great deal here with those beautiful eggs! So enjoy! I'm with this on Mr.Granny's side. Sorry!

  12. Wow! Great eggs and I can sympathise about the NO chickens. It was like that for years!

As for free ranging, I'd be concerned in your yard that they'd eat you garden. Tractoring them takes some work.

It's great you found a VERY cheap source of fresh eggs. I'd never part with mine for that little. Good for you! Great compromise until he sees just how cute and useful they are and changes his mind, hehe.

  13. I need an egg lady! I've been searching for a local egg source for a while now. So far my search has been limited to craigslist and anyone with eggs is too far (about 30+ minutes) away to be practical on a weekly basis.

  14. Langela, Random and Sinfonian, I'd actually have plenty of room for three chickens without giving them access to the garden. however, Mr. Granny would never give in, and I'd make pets out of them and refuse to kill them when they were no longer useful as layers! Besides, it would be a bit difficult taking them to AZ with us for the winter ;-)

  15. Well, the egg lady is just as good as having your own as you get all the lovely eggs without having to hear Mr. Granny grumble about cleaning out the coop LOL, congrats!

  16. Oh, Erin...you don't really think Mr. Granny would clean chicken poop, do you? He who MOWS dog poop?

  17. That is a beautiful basket of eggs....congrats on finding an egg lady!
We use the Amish in the area. Poor hubby is the one that wants chickens, but the fact that I have to leave in March makes that all but impossible. I guess we're lucky to have the Amish egg ladies!
    :D

  18. Wow that is cheap for free range eggs. In the Boston area they tend to range from $4-$5/dozen. And delivered! Very nice.

  20. Yep, you got yourself one heck of a deal! I just went to the Farmer's Market this morning, and free range eggs there were $5 a dozen. No basket included! Not delivered! They're beautiful, and I'm sure you will enjoy them.

  21. I used to have a white bantam hen who would lay little blue-green eggs :) She kept right up with the big hens, laying her miniature right next to the huge brown eggs. For the past few years we've only had a handful of chickens, but it's still nice to get the fresh eggs!

  22. Manda, I still haven't eaten that little blue-green egg! It's so pretty, I hate to break it ;-)
