December 30, 2009: Monday Harvest on Wednesday

It was small, but I did get a harvest last week!

I have pulled a few more radishes (not photographed), which are suddenly showing some size. The flavor is very good, sweet and mild. A couple of them have been attacked by root maggots, but most are pristine.

The carrots and kale in my mini-garden are finally showing some true leaves, the beets (old seed) are germinating poorly. The spinach is OK in the container, but not doing much in the raised bed. Mr. H says he wants to head home mid-February. If so, I'll probably be leaving everything but some lettuce, green onions and radishes to the neighbors.

  1. That looks most delicious! Your little winter garden is doing very well, but it sounds like you may be heading back north quite a bit sooner this year. Your main garden will be happy to have you return.

  2. At least you'll be able to take your time propagating your seedlings for the spring/summer garden if you head home that early. Mr. H will probably be sick of eating salads by then.

  3. Kitsap, I expect Mr. H will change his mind when the weather warms a bit. We've been having below normal temps, which has given him the winter blues.

EG, if I get home that early I'll surely start my veggies too early as I did last year! I was hoping he'd hold off until mid March.

Happy Hermit, I wish I had more! By the time Mr. H and the pet rabbit eat what I can grow in the winter, there's none left for me! I ate one slice of radish and one small tomato from the winter garden. The spring/summer/fall garden is just the opposite....we can't eat it all, and must give a lot away.

  4. Well, I guess there would be good things vegetable wise either way. That lettuce is certainly pretty. I finally got some napkin-glued carrots to germinate -- right where I'd transplanted lettuce on top of them! It just took torrential rain to make the carrots come up, apparently. Lessons learned.

  5. What a cute little harvest. The radishes especially. I can't wait for spring. I want pretty little radishes (and turnips).

  6. Oh, you can't go home yet... I heard some of your fellow bloggers are squatting there and gardening and eating your canned goods...lol! Not me, of course :) Are you busy with the seed catalogs yet? I hope you and family have a wonderful New Year's, "see ya next year"!

  7. Stefaneener, next time put a board over your carrots. It will aid in their germination and keep you from planting something else on top of them. Just be sure, after about the first week, to check often for sprouting and move the board off as soon as you see green.

Daphne, we're even then. I want homemade black bean soup ;-)

LOL, Erin! There's plenty there for the squatters to eat! That is, if my daughter hasn't been there.

I had half the seed catalogs sent up north, but I've received three here so far. I'm going rather bananas over them, but not ordering anything. My daughter bought my seeds for my Christmas present last year, this year she gave me a gift card for Fred Meyer. They have a good selection of seeds and plants, so I'll just wait until I get home to go crazy.

  8. Your harvest looks great. It will be a nice winter project even if the neighbor gets to reap most of the rewards.

  10. Radishes are my favorites! You are doing a good job, and I am sure your neighbors will be happy to get some fresh greens. Happy and Healthy New Year to you and your family! I loved the post about little Alicyn! The first picture is just great!

  11. Dan, at least I'm getting a tomato or two each week. I figure they've only cost me about $2 each so far ;-)

And a happy New Year to you, azplantlady!

Tatyana, when I left AZ last spring, my neighbors enjoyed lettuce from the garden for nearly two months. This time they'll probably have beets and carrots as well. Happy New year to you, too!

  12. The harvest looks delicious! Wish mine was growing as well this winter. Your DH may decide to hold out a little longer before heading back north this year. I've heard this is going to be a much colder winter this year. So far, it's been true down here in the south. I'm curious to see what our coldest months (January and February) bring.

  13. Judy, it's colder here this winter, too. Our cold weather should be over by the end of this month, though. It's hard to imagine that it's still winter up north when it gets warm down here. With Mr. H, it's more of a health issue/worry. He's uncomfortable being so far away from medical facilities if he should need them.
