November 3, 2010 - Trip to Aguila, AZ

Tuesday we made a trip to Aguila, to visit the Mexican outdoor produce stand. This is a weekly happening in this small town, 57 miles from our place, at the eastern edge of the Arizona Outback.

Along the way, reminders of days prior to the construction of the nearby freeway, Interstate 10, are very apparent. Tiny motels, boarded up and crumbling, and an old stone service station, long abandoned, can be seen.

In an area that is famous for growing delicious cantaloupe, nut tree forests and cotton fields also abound.

We spy the blue tarp covered produce market, and I do some shopping while Mr. Granny fills the gas tank at the service station next door.

Nearly everything is $1 for a plate full.

It's a long but enjoyable trip for five dollars worth of produce!

Back home, my own tiny garden is growing quite well. The spinach is up now, and I'm quite sure the weeds/lettuce are actually lettuce seedlings, as some of them are beginning to show a red blush to the leaves. I had both Red Romaine and Red Sails in that bed last year, so I'm happy to see that one or the other (or both) have self seeded.

Spinach, radishes and weeds. Tiny weeds are appearing all over this bed, and I know they aren't lettuce seedlings! I have no idea what could possibly have blown in during the summer. I'm glad the garden is so small, or I'd never be able to keep up with unwanted growth.

  1. WOW! That place looks fantastic! Interesting about the cotton, since it was a big cash crop for a long time out this way, I always assumed it needed the oppressive humidity LOL! Learn new things every day!

  2. Wow, that's a good deal for only a dollar per plate! I'd have to load up. I'm glad your little garden is doing well.

  3. I guess when you add water to the desert things go crazy. I'm glad your other weed seeds are lettuce. They looked liked lettuce, but until the true leaves appear they could be a lot of things.

  7. What a neat daytrip. I love old abandoned buildings. And a $1 a plateful for produce-wow! Good, cheap eats. And maybe it is a long drive for $5 in produce, but that sounds like a great "date" day! Glad you had fun. Loved the pics on the produce.

  8. Oh that market! I'm in serious jealous mode now. I can't believe the amount of produce for such a low price. and BEATUIFUL - GIANT produce at that. Are those the biggest tomatillos ever or soemthing else? Looks like a great trip, indeed.

  9. Luckily that soft soil and small bed will make it easy to keep the weeds attended to.

The produce market area looks like it would be a great resource for some good eating absent your own garden production.

One of my grandparents lived in Arizona for years and so we used to visit there periodically. I always remember the cotton fields and the cotton on the side of the road that had worked loose from the trucks that were hauling it.

  10. I can't get over the pricing on that produce! I would be hitting that market with a fist full of twenties and a pick-up truck. :) (For winter preserving of coarse.)

Luckily I am eating lunch cause all those fruits and veggies have me salivating. Thanks for sharing the trip, it is an area of the country I have never been to.

Your little seedlings are coming along nicely, curious that you have unusual weeds.

  11. Very neat pictures, Granny! Those farmers sure seem to have an abundance of everything. Also wanted to let you know that harvest Mondays are not the same without you! But I am enjoying the change of pace and reading your Arizona blog posts.

  12. Awesome find of a produce market. Such beautiful veggies, so cheap. Remarkable. Hey, in regard to Thyme's comment, you can post on Daphne's Dandelions whenever you use some of your wonderful stored produce. With harvests of over 900 lbs, I know you have plenty left in the pantry.
