November 30, 2010 - Boredom Sets In

As if only three days of library internet connection each week wasn't bad enough, I haven't been able to get on at all since last Wednesday! Normally I can park in front of the building when they're closed, and access my blog and all of yours. Not any more. Now they've put a block on personal web pages, and the librarian has to sign me in for access! Let's hope we have an early warm spring, so I can go back home early and lead a normal life. Mr. Granny says weather willing we can head back in February instead of waiting until March.

It's been cold and windy here, with lows down to 31F. It hasn't bothered the lettuce, spinach and radishes, but it did kill the basil and froze the flowers. The Meyer lemon tree lives inside now, and has put forth another growth spurt. It not only got about six inches taller, it began branching out at the tips so it's looking bushier. Daytime temperatures have hovered in the low 50s all week, but are expected to get back into the seventies by Thursday.

My friend, Esther, picked me up last Tuesday and we went to Phoenix for a day of shopping at Costco. It was nice to get away for a while, as boredom has really set in. I was glad to see my Idaho friends come in this week. Marge is my travel partner when I want to head for Mexico, and I'm due for a dental appointment again. This time I'm prepared, as I have my enhanced driver's license. That works like a passport for land travel to Mexico or Canada, so I won't get in trouble with the border patrol like I did last year!

Mr. Granny and I are going to Lake Havasu City tomorrow. He needs to get the oil changed in the Ranger, and we've been wanting an excuse to pig out at the Golden Corral's buffet. Maybe I can also find some good holiday bargains, since I missed out on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Mr. Granny and I stayed home, and I roasted a turkey with stuffing. We also had mashed potatoes, gravy, baked butternut squash (from the WA garden), cranberry sauce, olives and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Annie and Otto got turkey for their dinner, and they are still eating the leftovers!

  1. Sorry to hear about your internet woes! It must be really frustrating, I think I would have headed home by now, I get so impatient about things!

  2. Erin, there's a blizzard at home right now. Not sure which is worse...no internet or a blizzard! I think I'd take the blizzard, sitting in front of the fireplace, with laptop and internet, LOL.

  3. I am so happy to finally see a post from you! It sounds like you, Mr. Granny & the little guys had a nice Thanksgivig dinner.

"The Italian" said that you would go home sooner then you originally said....I guess he was right!

Take care and don't get into trouble at the border if you go to Mexico before your next post!!

I promise to stay out of trouble on my next Mexico trip.

  5. I spent a week in September on an island in Maine. Beautiful, but internet only at the library. I was so bored I took the ferry and then the bus to the Apple Store at the Maine Mall and bought an IPod so I could listen to the radio.

Guess I don't do so well relaxing.

  6. Sounds like a not-so-good time this winter..I'm so sorry to hear that. Well, here's hoping you have a speedy winter and can get back "home" to a bit of normalcy!

  8. 50s in the day and down to 31F in the evening, sounds like NYC. You should come to New York!! Lots of "free" internet wifi spots here. :) Sounds like your Meyer lemon plant is really happy. Mine had a growth spurt this summer it loved being outside in full sunshine. Now it sits in my front enclosed porch and it's doing well but not growing. Sorry to hear that the internet is still sporadic. I would not be able to live with only 3 days of internet. I would go batty.

  9. Glad to hear that you are still around but I can guess how frustrating the the lack of computer connection must be. Think by now I would have pulled all my hair out LOL. Diane

  11. Granny! You are alive. I was starting to wonder if you had been taken by the border control. If we were in that situation without internet, my husband would break before me, but it wouldn't last long. My dad couldn't take not having internet where they were (Colorado mountains) and put in a T1 line going to his house. For years he supplied fast internet service to the neighbors. Too bad he isn't your neighbor.

  12. Sounds like you had a nice quiet Thanksgiving. Sorry about the internet struggles. It is so frustrating!

  13. I would be pacing the house! Its good that you have some trips planned to break up the time. I wonder why the library shut the door on access?

  14. Well, I hope this time the trip doesn't leave you quite as 'down in the mouth' and the casino adds to your pocket instead of taking. Good luck! As for the weather vs internet that's a hard choice. LOL

  18. Linda, I think I've adapted quite well to limited internet. I don't even find myself parking outside in the evenings any more, and once a week has become the norm.

    ********
Sue, I am biting at the bit to get back home, even though I'm sporting a T-shirt and shorts today, and there's still snow on the ground at home. Too bad I can't have the best of both worlds!

    ********
Nickie, ha-ha-ha-ha! Probably not. I can't even get a cell phone connection there.

    ********
Meems, I went batty for the first month, now I'm quite used to it. Leona the Lemon has some odd new leaves, all puckered like they have insect damage, but no insects to be seen.

    ********
Diane, I'm almost beginning to enjoy my time away from the computer now. Almost. I'm certainly keeping up with the TV shows, and suffering from political news overload.

    ********
TIG, I can get myself into enough trouble without your help, young man.

    ********
Daphne, if we were here year round, I'd have satellite internet. It's this changing addresses all the time that messes things up. You should hear what happened with Charter Cable internet, after it was supposed to be all straightened out. Not. They owed me a refund of twenty-some dollars for what I had pre-paid for the month of October, but instead charged me another $79 as being past due for that month!! That's double what they even charge for a full month, plus anther $20 lost refund. Then it took an hour of cell phone minutes to get it straightened out....or at least they said it was straightened out, I haven't had any correspondence from them since :-(

    ********
Thanks, Lorie. I'm dealing with it now ;-) I think I'll survive.

    ********
Kitsap, it blocks personal websites to protect the children who use the library computers. They gave me the password, so it's not a problem now.

    ********
Barbie, I still haven't made it to Mexico. Mr. Granny won't go, so I'm waiting for someone else to volunteer to make the trip with me.

    ********
Mr. H., I find the vendors in Mexico to be very annoying. I dislike strangers grabbing my arms and trying to sell me something. I'm a hard sell....I know what I want, and I won't be intimidated!

We even get news reports down here about all the snow in Spokane. I'm in shorts and T-shirt today. Am I crazy for wishing I were home?

    ********
Scented Leaf, we didn't go! We decided to wait until this week, as the weather was predicted to be much warmer. And it is....sunny, warm and no wind!

    ********
Kelly, the last of the turkey went into the garbage yesterday. Even the dogs were getting tired of it, I think! They have fresh chicken thighs, brown rice and organic baby green beans for this week. Spoiled much?
