October 4, 2011 - Harvest Monday on Tuesday

I know, I know, I'm late to the party! Honestly, this past week has just been a whirlwind of busyness. Along with the end-of-garden cleanup, I decided to clean out closets, haul the discards to the thrift store, and begin packing for our Arizona trip. Yesterday and today found me taking a grandson to the dentist for a checkup and fillings. I hate sitting for 2 1/2 hours, listening to my stomach growl because I missed lunch, freezing half to death in the frigid waiting room, and bored after having read every magazine in the place. I did find a sunbeam coming through a window, so I sat there and basked in its warmth until clouds covered the sun, then I had to go out and sit in my car to warm up.

That's why I missed Harvest Monday.

Harvest Totals September 26 - October 2

Beans, bush - 1.94 pounds (final harvest)
Beans, pole - 8 ounces (final harvest)
Beets - 1.06 pounds
Carrots - 2.69 pounds
Cucumbers - 4 ounces (final harvest)
Lettuce - 14 ounces
Peppers, sweet - 6.19 pounds
Spinach - 2 ounces
Squash, summer - 6 ounces
Strawberries - 1.06 pounds
Tomatoes - 11.44 pounds

Total harvest for the week: 26.50 pounds
Total harvest for the year to date: 510.32 pounds

This week the harvests for the year broke the 500 pound mark, which is just slightly over half of what was harvested last year, but satisfactory nonetheless.

Please join in the Harvest Monday at Daphne's Dandelions!

  1. I hate cold waiting rooms with their "nothing" environment. Opposite of gardens, don't you think? And, I'm not overly fond of dentists, either. But you got to come home and see the garden; that's good.

  2. So, are you still trying to keep up with preserving these goodies? My gosh, -even in the midst of getting ready to leave, your harvests are impressive. Pull the plug! Pull the plug!!
    :D
I can imagine your vehicle driving down to AZ with tubs of produce hanging out the window-LOL!

  7. Dianefaith, I just don't know why these waiting rooms have to have their air conditioning running full blast when it's only 63 degrees outside! I also wish they would update their reading materials. 2009 editions of Redbook or Sports Illustrated just don't happen to appeal to me.

Sue, I'm only into eating and giving away at this point, mostly the latter. My youngest son reaped the benefits of almost the entire week's harvest.

Ribbit, next week I need to get out and dig all the rest of the carrots. They, along with the acorn squashes, will head south with us.

Robin, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it won't freeze before we leave. Last year I took enough green tomatoes with us that they were ripening clear into December.

TIG, yes...the old bird is heading south for the winter. I'm hoping we get the property sold this time, so we can head back home for good.

Barbie, I'm never "ready" to leave. When one has to go for that many months, and look forward to temperatures that, during that period of time, will range from the 100s down to below freezing, it takes a lot of packing....summer clothing, winter clothing, and everything in between! I always take more than I need, then wonder where to put it all once I get there. Thank heavens we have duplicates of most things, so I don't have to haul household items back and forth (only my bread machine). Getting the frozen and canned foods packed is the big thing, along with the animals and their bedding, toys, food, etc. Cookie has a big cage at both houses, so he doesn't take up much room in the small travel cage.

  9. Shawn Ann, I'm 43 blogs behind in my reading!

I hope the rain stops so I can dig all the rest of the carrots! I'm not looking forward to doing it in the mud.
