September 6, 2012 - Thursday's Kitchen Cupboard

I've got nuthin' for Thursday's Kitchen Cupboard, just a paintbrush in my hand.  I did make Mr. Granny a lovely dinner last night, with freshly picked mixed vegetables (beans, carrots and crookneck squash), a big sliced Cherokee Purple tomato and a huge helping of fresh zucchini, fried up nice and crispy.  I was too tired to eat, so I had a bowl of Cheerios at bedtime.

I'm on the home stretch with the house painting, and the back of the house will be finished today.  That leaves me with just the west side, which is the smallest of all the areas to paint, and some touch up areas on the trim and patio railings.

The back of the house was a beotch to paint.  (I just had to throw that in, as Kris and 1st. Man get such a kick out of Granny saying "beotch").   The back is where all the TV wires, electrical conduits, various metal and plastic poles and receptacles reside.  Everything that takes forever to either paint or to avoid painting.  There are big shrubs that poke one in various places and make setting up a ladder most difficult.   Mr. Granny decided to help and used a small roller to apply the paint.  He rolled the paint on so thinly, I had to go back over everything with the brush.  He also painted the trim on the one window that's not going to be replaced.  I have no idea how I'm going to rectify that mess.  Thank heavens it's in the back, and on the side not visible from the patio.  The man is not a painter!

The garden is producing quite well yet, and I put another full gallon of green beans in the freezer.  The tomatoes are still taking their time, but I expect they will be forthcoming around the same time as I finish the house painting, so that will be great timing.  I had to clip the ties holding up some of them, so I can paint nearby, and as the vines fell forward they exposed a lot of fruits that weren't even visible before.  I'm thinking of clipping all of the support ties on Tomato Alley once I get that side of the house painted, and will not have to maneuver around them to work.  The sun has shifted slightly to the south now, so the plants aren't getting the light and warmth they've had in past months.  Sprawling on the ground would be messy, but they'd have greater light exposure and, hopefully, a better chance of ripening.

I might have little or nothing to show off for Thursday's Kitchen Cupboard, but others do.  Run on over to Robin's place and see what everyone else is putting into their pantries and garden meals!

    1. Sue, he thinks his job is to sit and stare at me while I paint, which drives me absolutely nuts! I hate for anyone to watch me work, especially when I'm painting an area that requires my full attention, like right up next to the trim. I do need him to help with things like helping to screw the TV cables back on to the siding, or to cut back a few humongous branches that I can't handle with the loppers. Most of the time I wish he'd just go inside so I could pipe some good music into my ears and get 'er done!

    2. Oh, I agree. I HATE when Don watches me do something. Sometimes retirement ISN'T so grand......when it leads to supervising hubbies!

  2. I guess I'm lucky that my husband can paint. Since he is OCD he probably does a better job than I do, but he is slower. You have me thinking I'd better get some paint and start my walls this fall. I might even do it.

    1. Daphne, it never ends. You paint one room and the next one looks shabby. Pretty soon you're redoing the entire house. Of course your place is new, so it's not as needy as mine!

  3. Sounds like your working way to hard. I have paint and need to get the paint brush in my hand and moving on the trim inside!

    1. Texan, I have a lot of interior trim that needs painting, too. I'm waiting until after they install the new windows, then I can tackle all the inside trim this winter. I talked to the window installer guy about letting me pre-paint all the exterior window and door trim before they install it (it comes primed, and they charge $30 a window if they paint it). He said that should be doable. I hope so, it will save me a lot of taping and ladder climbing. Much easier to just have to touch up areas that need it.

  4. Granny, I don't know where you get all your energy. I used to have that much energy when I was in my thirties :)

    1. Robin, I just try to pretend I'm in my thirties! After about four hours of painting, I'm reminded that I'm really not in my thirties, I was born in the thirties!

  5. This would be so much more hilarious if I didn't know how anxious you are to be done with all that painting! I swear our beloved men do these things on purpose just to get out of it LOL

    1. Erin, I not only suspect that to be true, I pretty much know it to be true. I've told the story before, of Mr. Granny helping me weed. After he got into trouble for pulling out all of my crocuses from around the tree, he never again even attempted to pull another weed. To this day. And that was probably 40 years ago! I doubt, after this house painting is finished, he'll ever pick up another paint brush. Actually he didn't do too badly, considering it's only the second time in 50 years he's ever helped me with the painting, LOL!
