May 6, 2013 - Harvest Monday

I could just put last week's photos here, the harvest was almost a duplicate this week.

The lettuce and spinach are just barely keeping up with our daily salads, but it sure is nice to have fresh garden greens instead of store bought.

Lots of varieties here, including Anuenue, Red Sails, Buttercrunch, Paris Island Cos, Little Gem, Yugoslavian Red Butterhead and Wild Garden Mix.

The spinach is sweet and delicious, but I wish there were more of it!

I did get a few radishes, but something ate most of them before we could (I suspect wire worms), just enough celery for a few salads, and fresh basil for last night's Chicken Mozzarella.

Basil: not weighed
Celery: 1.7 ounces
Lettuce: 9.9 ounces
Radishes: .8 ounce
Spinach: 3.7 ounces

Total this week: 16.1 ounces
Total to date: 2.38 pounds

  1. Aww, me too. Same old, same old. But still, it is nice to know you are getting a renewed supply each week! Sorry about your radishes.

    1. Shawn Ann, I'm not that unhappy about the radishes, as they aren't my favorites, but Mr. Granny loves them. I would replant in another area, but this sudden hot weather would probably doom them before they could mature. I might try in a shady spot though.

  2. We have matching harvests!! Well...kinda. Lots of greens at my house. I love fresh lettuce from the garden and it sure beats having to buy it at the store and not knowing how it was raised and where it's from. I love the variety you have! I tried anuenue last year but wasn't successful. I chalked it up to being a Hawaiian variety and not made for the NW but seems I should try again.

    1. Holly, I've only successfully grown about 4 Anuenue plants, and 3 of them are in this year's garden. I've been taking outer leaves from them, but I really should let them grow and see how well they do in the heat. I did plant another entire row of them under the shed tomatoes, but they haven't yet germinated. I love the crispness of that variety, so I do hope I'm successful with it. We have more heat here than you do, maybe they will think it's Hawaii, LOL!

  3. No radishes ready here yet or wasn't when I left on vacation. Your lettuce and spinach look good and it is nice you are getting at least that much. Hard to be patient when the produce starts! Nancy

    1. Nancy, I had nice radishes, and lots of them, by this time last year. This year one bed went to tops with hardly any radish, and the other bed is being eaten up! It's never a perfect gardening year.

    2. I took a break from the blog world. I felt like my posts where just a repeat of the previous year. Still gardening, even started a garden project in my mom's backyard. I'll think about posting about that project. You know me... like you... I keep busy ;-)

    3. It was never too repetitive for me, it was always my favorite garden! I still have a folder of your photos from past years.

  5. Your lettuces and spinach look wonderful! Salads fresh from the garden is the best.

I grew radishes in early summer once, they were so hot my coworker thought I was trying to poison her. I let the radishes bolt and stir fried the green seed pods.

    1. Phuong, I'm certainly getting some good vitamins and fiber from those delicious salads! Radishes can get horribly hot in the summer, LOL! I don't think mine will last that long though. I guess I'll plant a few more tomorrow, just in case this heat spell doesn't last.

  6. I didn't pick my lettuce last week as I had been picking it small and the plants weren't getting any bigger. I figured they needed a break. So now their leaves are finally touching. I need to start picking again. So I'm going to get salads again. I'm out of dressing though, so I ought to make a couple kinds to put in the fridge.

    1. Daphne, I have mine planted in two different areas of the garden, so I think I'll pick one area and let the other grow. I have a bunch more just coming up that was direct seeded, so soon I should be getting enough that most can grow to full size.
