October 28, 2013 - Basking in the Cuteness

A couple of people have expressed their concern because of my lack of blogging recently.  I'm still alive, people!  It's just that the gardening has slowed drastically, and I'm bored to the point of playing a lot of solitaire and Scrabble with my computer.

We're expecting our first hard freeze tonight, so I've picked the green tomatoes and they are ripening in the house.  Weight totals are added to my sidebar as they are moved from trays to kitchen window.   Just six pounds to go before I hit 1000 pounds of garden produce for the year!

I still had one pepper plant, so I pulled off all the peppers and got them into the freezer yesterday.

There weren't many carrots surviving after Annie and the squirrels tried digging up the bed, so I pulled them all and had delicious baby carrots for dinner last night.

Some of the flowers are blooming prettier than they did all summer, but I fear today is the last time I'll be enjoying them.

We're in the middle of another big windstorm, so the pine branches have been joined by the neighbor's leaves to litter our yard.  The leaves were so deep on the front porch this morning, I had to dig around in them to find the newspaper!  I had moved the lettuce cage over to cover the spinach seedlings, and stapled on plastic to keep the little plants warm. This morning the entire cage had blown off the bed and was up against the back fence.  I had to go out and staple on some heavy boards to (hopefully) hold it in place.  I may have to find some tie downs!

Spinach seedlings (last week).  They aren't much bigger yet, so I hope they survive the winter.  Yesterday I found two huge slugs sliming themselves all over the plants.  Today I noticed the squirrels had again dug holes throughout the bed once the cage blew off.

I had Mr. Granny light the pilot on our propane fireplace insert last night.  I'm preparing for the oncoming frigid temperatures, and ready to plop my body into the recliner in front of a roaring (or maybe a simmering) fire.  In the meantime, I've been basking in some real cuteness.......

Great-granddaughter Yaya (Amaya) is three weeks old today.

    1. It's getting real close to 1000 pounds, Carolyn! Just 3 pounds to go now.

Yes, she sure does have a lot of hair. It's definitely from her Mexican/Asian heritage. At least she didn't get my fine, (formerly) blonde, unmanageable hair.

  2. What a beautiful photo of your great-granddaughter Yaya. We are supposed to get our first freeze tonight also, fortunately I had my small garden taken care of long time ago. Enjoy your fire :)

  3. My grandbaby is into spitting when she gets angry. A lot. Makes the memories of her this (Yaya) little that much sweeter.

  4. What a cutie. I just figured THAT was keeping you busy.
I'm still cleaning up the garden--and looking forward to some inside time.
You got some real impressive produce totals this year. Oh, who are we kidding ........EVERY year. You're the best. I think you could single handedly (is that a word?) put the fear in a grocery store-LOL!

    1. Well, Sue, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if she kept me even busier. I missed out on an entire week when my cold was just too bad, and the only time I've been able to hold and spoil her this week was when I took her and her mommy to a doctor appointment.

I'll never put fear in the grocery store unless I can turn Mr. Granny into a vegetarian. That'll never happen!

    1. Sure, Rachel, tell me to stay warm on our first day of 31F! At least that's what our thermometer said at 7 this morning, the weather thingy in my sidebar said it was 28. I get cold so easily. I keep the house at 72, and I still have to wear a heavy sweater inside!

  7. Oh, how precious is she! Almost 1000 lbs. Congratulations! I haven't had time to be bored from lack of gardening yet! We did get a frost last night, Didn't think we were suppose to and didn't put the cover down on the cold frame! Good thing we can't get Annie and Coco together! Nancy

    1. Nancy, you are so busy with your music and sewing you wouldn't have time to get bored! You're harvesting more than I am right now. I'd love to have even a handful of those raspberries!

  10. That's quite an accomplishment Gran! Hopefully those green tomatoes all ripen nicely. Though I wish I had some to make green tomato pickles.

It's gotten quite cold here as well. It's been a quite a while now since I've had a garden, let alone a winter one. I can't wait to get back into it come January.

    1. Thomas we're still eating pickle from 2009! I got a bit carried away that year. We did get a freeze last night, so the last two Sungold tomato plants are now toast. I'm glad I went out and clipped of all of the larger clusters off yesterday. They're mostly very green, but they would make some nice pickled tomatoes if I cared to use them for that purpose. With luck they might ripen.

  11. I've been wondering where you went to also. But with your cold and the cutie I figured you were busy with life and not with the garden. So are you going to be able to pull out the last six pounds? I figure I'm good for 500 pounds this year. A really bad year around here. I'll have to look over the records come December and figure out where the garden failed and if I can fix it next year.

    1. Daphne, I'm quite sure I'll go over 1000 pounds. As of today's tomato weigh in, It's at 997 pounds, and I'd guess there might be at least 8 pounds still to ripen, plus some parsnips that may or may not be large enough to eat..

  12. :) Nice to see you still kicking up dust online. The fireplace will be a treat. Mainly the chair, I imagine. Yesterday I was looking at the actual mathematics of what it takes to heat my house when it is -20F outside. Plotting all the little r-values, dimensions, etc. Coming up with about 9000 btus/hr. Happily noting that it is possible to survive with what heating I have. A couple pounds of pine logs an hour should suffice.

It is windy as heck, here as well!!

Definitely an inside project day. In my case that is cleaning up the main floor. Get everything back in order.
