October 7, 2013 - Harvest Monday (Updated)

The weather has been too cold for them to ripen, so I harvested most of the peppers and pulled the plants.  There were about 27-1/2 pounds of them here, and my daughter took 5 pounds of them home with her.  The remaining peppers were all donated to the food bank.

I'm still getting a few tomatoes.  I manage to get about two quarts of tomato juice a week now, just enough for drinking, but not enough to bother with canning.

My year to date total is now at 981 pounds.  I might get another 20 pounds of tomatoes, but it's doubtful.

Maybe I could add this 6 pounds 12 ounces to my harvest total......

I just got back from the hospital, where my new great-granddaughter was born just 2 hours ago.  Welcome to the big world, little (Amaya) Yaya !

Daphne's Dandelions is the host for Harvest Monday.

Update....about 4 hours after the birth

Yaya with her mother, Alicia. They look alike, don't they?

  1. Curious. Carol, if you add Amaya to the totals... Then doesn't it suggest she is a cabbage patch kid?? What a beautiful morning. ps. I forgot to add in the reply on my site, You morning coffee must have been extra sharp too! (THAT IS because you were daydreaming in your happy Great-grandmotherly bliss.... and ended up putting far too many grounds in the pot. ;-) )

    1. Cloud, the first cup was at 4 this morning, instant coffee. Two more cups at the hospital deli, a fourth cup ("real" coffee) back at home, during my visit with you, and a fifth (tepid) cup right now. No food yet, so I'll be on a caffeine high today! I have to stay awake and get great-grandpa over to see the baby this afternoon.

She does look rather like a Cabbage Patch Kid in that just-born photo! She prettied up as soon as she stopped crying, and she's adorable. There's lots of hair under that cap! She seems to be a gentle, quiet baby, just like her mother was. I'm getting the rocking chair warmed up for her, and digging out the old Kenny Loggins "Return to Pooh Corners" lullabies to play and sing along with. Not that I plan on spoiling her or anything ;-)

  2. Carol, What a great harvest. I love the little girls, but must admit my grandson is a joy also. If you do not spoil her I will. I am very happy that they are both doing well. Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy. IN truth nothing else matters but the little ones. I can feel your joy.

  3. I hope that little Yaya will grow up to be the latest in a line of accomplished gardeners - or at very least someone who appreciates good food!

  7. Frank, Mark, Daphne, Nutmeg and Sue,

Thanking you all at once, as I'm having internet connection problems today! Not only is it slow, I've had to reset my modem 6 times already! Wouldn't you know this would also be the day I'd get billed for it, and I'm not a happy camper. Unfortunately, I have to keep the service for a year :-(

Just got back from another trip to the hospital. Great-grandpa got to see the new baby....he approves, LOL! She's just soooo adorable, I can't hardly wait until she gets to visit so I can spoil her rotten.

  15. OK, seriously? A GREAT Grandmother? You are far too young to be a GG. I mean, we all knew you were a "great" Grandmother, but a GREAT Grandmother? Wait, now I'm confusing myself.

Side note, the 981 pounds is just stunning. I know it's not 2009 total, but it's so amazing to me.

    Congrats, on both accomplishments!

  17. Awww .... Yaya looks sooo ... cute!! I wanna hold her and smell her! Isn't it like being close to heaven when you hold a newborn? It must be, or at least that's what I imagine heaven to be like. Congratulations, Great Grandma, and Alicia the newbie mom! Now, I can go to sleep happy! :-) :-)

Oh, and the harvest too, it looks good. xoxo

    1. Mrs. R., are you me? I'm such a pushover for the tiny ones, with the holding and smelling! I just don't want to let go until they get old enough for the poop stink, LOL! But then the cuteness sets in with the first word, first steps, first tantrum.......all I have to do is read my other blog, about a year with her mother, Alicia, and all those fun memories come flooding back. I hope Yaya is just like her mother was, sweet and funny.

  19. CONGRATS!!!! Yes, they do look alike, just beautiful:-) I LOVE your picture above with the butternut squash...what a great idea! You sure grow a lot of peppers:-) Do you grow Kale, Swiss Chard or lettuce in your climate, or is it too hard. Some people don't like kale/Swiss Chard, so I understand. My fall garden is picking up and I will see how long it lasts this year. I believe you get more of the cold weather a bit sooner that we do in zone 5 midwest...enjoy your GREAT grandbaby:-)

    1. Robbie, all those peppers were kind of by accident. Three of my kids wanted me to start peppers for them, but only one ended up planting a garden. So I ended up with all the extras, and there was no way I was going to give them all away. I did give a bunch to the man across the street, or I'd have had another dozen plants to contend with! The man from the food bank requested I overplant again next year :-)

I tried kale and chard, and we didn't really like them. We don't care for beet greens either. Odd, as we really do love spinach. I do plant a lot of lettuce, but I didn't get a late enough planting started. My "fall" lettuce mostly went to seed when our September temps were up in the high 90s. We do have a long growing season, we're in zone 7A. Our normal temps this time of year are low to mid 70s, but we've been a good 10-20 degrees below normal lately. The first frost can usually be expected around October 15.

  21. Did you have your first child when you were two? You're not old enough to have one, let alone five, great grandkids! You get far too much done in a day to be that old. Congratulations to mom, grandmom, and great-grandmom- oh and the dads too. :)

  22. Oh my goodness...OK, gardening aside for a minute! First, congratulations! Yaya is gorgeous and I'm so glad to hear her and Momma are doing well! Second, the Butternut Squash guys in your header? Fantastic! I love them! Ok now...your harvest totals always amaze and inspire me! You're hovering at almost 1000 pounds for the year and I am in awe. Congratulations on an amazing year! And who knows, maybe you will get another 20 pounds of tomatoes! Eat 'em or can 'em green and count them in :-)

    1. Bee Girl, I picked them green yesterday, and they are sitting on the bookshelf to (hopefully) ripen. If they do, I'll easily hit the 1000 pound mark this year!

Yaya has come to visit twice this week, so I'm getting in some real good great-grandmothering time :-)
