September 1, 2011 - In the Outback

The Outback Steakhouse, that is. I finally got a night off, but only because we were celebrating our 49th. wedding anniversary. We had a really good dinner, and such a nice waitress. As we were conversing with her, I mentioned we were celebrating, and here she came, after dinner, with a giant hot fudge sundae for us to share!

I was quite busy in the garden today. The summer planted bush beans are beginning to bear, and I really do already have a LOT of beans in the freezer, so I pulled out the main crop of pole beans. It was difficult, as they were still producing and blossoming, but they were also shading the morning glories that haven't even budded yet. Maybe with a little sunlight the flowers will bloom before frost. The raspberry patch had grown a lot of small suckers, so I got all of those removed and raked up. I fact, I got the entire north garden and kennel garden cleaned up, weeded and raked out. A second Brandywine got removed, it was too close to death to bear ripe fruit. Of the Brandywines, only the yellow one is left, and it may go soon. I did get a couple of nice tomatoes from it, and had a delicious BLT from one for lunch today. I also cut a bunch of runners from the strawberries, many of which were growing outside the edges of the bed.

All the kids and grandkids are coming over for a barbecue on Sunday, a late anniversary party. We get to just sit back while they provide all the food, drink and even the paper plates and plastic utensils. I did insist on providing the pickles, relishes, sweet onions and tomatoes.

  1. Wow, one more year to 50. How wonderful! Great to hear you two had a nice anniversary dinner but betting the barbecue will rival it. :) Happy anniversary!

  2. Happy Anniversary, Granny. Wow, 49years. That is impressive, esp. this day and age. I, Lord willing, look forward to 49years or more with my lovey. Oh boy, a hot fudge sundae. What a great anniversary treat. May you have many more years with one another.
    Blessings to you both,
    Lorie

  3. Happy Anniversary!!! That was awful sweet of your waitress too :)

Alright lady.. next time you are getting rid of raspberry suckers stick 'em in a bucket and I'll send you postage to mail me some! :D AND the strawberry runners too! Yep, I'm beggin' here.. :P The few raspberry cuts I got from a freecycler early this year didn't make it between tree fall debris and dogs deciding they are MIGHTY tasty... chewing on thorns is a past time of one of our dogs...she must have some goat blood in her somewhere down the line..lol

How's cookie doing? I keep checking craigslist for a replacement bunny but I still miss Gally so much.. he was like my baby! ugh. I do want another one eventually.. just maybe not QUITE yet.

Sounds like you have some wonderful plans this weekend w/ family. I hope you have a lovely time!

    p.s. It's nearly 2am and now I'm craving a BLT with a homegrown 'mater! :P:P:P:P

    Hugs,
    ~Wendy

But, if I'm doing math in my head, how have you been married for 49 years when you're only 22? That doesn't make sense!
    ;)
Hope you have oodles more fun together!

  15. Congratulations on 49 years together! That is a real
accomplishment. I have some tomatoes I should just pull out - as they are not producing at all. Five of them to be exact. The plants are all healthy though and I really don't have anything planned to go into that bed, so I just leave them there and cuss at them. :D

  23. Happy Anniversary! Wow next year is the big 50. For my folks 50th I took them sailing in the Caribbean. Oh that was a wonderful trip. I was a bit worried being in a small boat with my dad for a week (he is a workaholic and I thought he might go nuts but the trip was picked with my mom in mind), but he had a great time. My brother was supposed to throw them a party since he lives near them, but he wimped out.
