May 7, 2014 - Goodbye Granny.

Carol L. Hattrup passed away peacefully on May 7, 2014 after battling cancer with her family by her side.

Carol was born on January 26, 1939 to Ethel P. Rowden (Morefield) and Harry E.W. Forge, in Lewiston, Idaho. She married R. John Kunze in 1956, and had 2 sons, the youngest being born just days after her husband's death in 1959. In 1962 she married John (Jack) Hattrup, and together they had 3 more children. Jack’s job took them to Baker Oregon, and then Walla Walla Washington, before settling in Pasco in 1974, where they built their business and raised their family.

Carol was an avid gardener, blogger, talented artist and a lover of music, but first and foremost a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved step-father, H. Fred Morefield and son Richard Kunze. She will be greatly missed by those who survive her; husband Jack, of 52 years, sister Cristy Palmer (Jim), sons R. John Kunze and Scott Hattrup, daughters Shannon Hattrup and Amy Davis (Bryan), grandchildren Shawn, Jared, Shayna, Alicia, Ethan, Sierra, Kevin and Alicyn, and great grandchildren Carter, Cambri, Remington, Bryson and Amaya.

At her request, there will be no service.

I'm not ready to say goodbye,
but I'll wipe my tears and dry my eyes,
for you'll live on in all we do,
as each of us is part of you.
And much like the seeds in the gardens you've grown,
your words have been planted, your love has been sown.
I'm not ready to say goodbye,
but I'll go on, and I'll survive,
for with each spring blossom, each laugh and each tear,
I will think of you always and know that you're here.

  2. Her words have been planted deep in my heart, my soul. I've said that when I grow up I want to be like Granny because she was kind and wise, understanding and compassionate. The best friend I've ever had! She meant, no, she means the world to me.

You guys are in my thoughts and prayers. The poem is beautiful and so perfect. Thank you for letting us know. (hugs)

  4. Amy,
Thank you for keeping us updated. I'm very sorry for your family's loss. Carol was a great influence to other gardeners and bloggers. Though I never met her in person, we frequented GardenWeb at the same time a few years ago, and she was always a kind, caring, and helpful online friend. She influenced me to start my own blog (though I've never been as good at keeping up with it as she was). She will be missed.

  18. I'm so sorry for your loss! Granny was one of my favorite people in the world. We laughed together and she tried to steal my dog and my handy husband often. I was inspired daily to do more, even though I knew I could never keep up with her. She seemed to always have so much energy and drive. I will still continue to strive to have gardens as pretty and organized as hers always were. Despite the pain at her loss, I am so glad that I got to know her and have her in my life. Again, Amy and family, I am so sorry for your loss!

  24. She was on my mind quite a bit yesterday.. I suppose this is why... She was, and still is, truly an inspirational woman in my heart. She was an incredibly strong woman, full of perseverance and take THAT! attitude, stubborn and filled with as much love and humor as a person can possibly possess... I will miss you dearly but your inspiration will certainly carry on. Gardening for Granny continues for me... My prayers and thoughts go out to your family, both blood related and blogger, as we all are saddened by the thought of losing you... Much love and hugs to you all. 30. I haven't checked in on Granny's blog for nearly a year. With the garden season kicked off I stopped in to see how she was doing... I'm so sorry for your family's loss, she was a great lady, and her friends around the world will miss her deeply. It breaks my heart that i won't be spending my summer comparing harvests and watching as her garden blossoms from a dirty smudge in the yard into the living breathing glory that she worked so hard to make it. I guess I'll be planting the Bloody Butcher tomato she recommended in her honor, rather than just to see if they are as good as she said. Lots of Love, Ariel.

She had a tremendous sense of humor, she responded to everyone's comments on this blog, and her voice will be missed. 57. She was a special lady, and my heart goes out to all of her loved ones. I found Annie's Kitchen Garden about two hours after getting a plot in a community garden. Her wit and wisdom launched my gardening career, and she's been a virtual companion in my garden ever since. I think of her every time I get a burger at my neighborhood joint. They make their own buns, which look an awful lot like "Granny's Buns!" Thanks for sharing her with us for so long.

  58. I can not express how much I will truly miss Granny. I loved and greatly admired her. She was the first to welcome me into the blogging community and the comments she left on my blog were witty, funny, and kind at the same time. Oh, how much fun we had talking online. When I mentioned that I was a fan of Bee Gees, this was the comment she left me:

Your chives, being Closer Than Close, are better than having just One. If they weren’t all Living Together, they have a lot of Lonely Days , leading to Night Fever. That could cause a lot of Emotion among them. After all, common chives and garlic chives are Flesh and Blood ya know! How Can You Mend a Broken Heart if garlic chives ignores common chives and spends all of her Nights On Broadway? I can almost hear common chives crying, “I Just Want to Be Your Everything! If I Can’t Have You, I might as well move into a House of Shame, you Heartbreaker! Garlic chives, you’re More Than A Woman to me. I Love You Inside Out, with Love So Right. Sob; sniffle. How Deep Is Your Love? I’m not just Chive Talkin’, Garlic. Please Be Tender With My Love.” I like the Bee Gees too!

Vintage Granny. Your family's loss is ours as well. My deepest condolences to you, Amy, and your entire family. -- Mrs. R.

  62. Amy and family....thank you for updating the post with the video, so very sweet and neat to watch her life in pictures. I still find it hard to not see her comments on our blogs. She was a common link to a lot of us with blogs, and her absence is very noticeable. The last few days, I've found myself wanting to send her a note about our garden and get some advice.

Somehow though, I think we'll all have a garden angel visiting us from time to time. :-)

  63. With profound sadness, I offer your family condolences. Granny was like an online granny to so many of us. Always visited this blog to read on granny's kindness, knowledge and wisdom, not just about gardening but all the rest as well. She had an answer to everything and I could always count on her for a response back.

I feel for Mr.Granny, who she had once offered to give up (one of the first times I visited this site). She was an absolute delight to converse with and had so much advice for newbies like me. I just can't believe she has left us all alone, this gardening season. It hasn't yet sunk in, but thinking about her brings tears to my eyes.

Granny - Hope you have a wonderful mother's day, wherever you are!! Rest in peace, you deserve it after working so hard on your garden year round for many many years!! WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU VERY VERY MUCH!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Like so many here, Granny was the first to comment on my blog and, later, through email. After complaining about having a hard time growing tomatoes in Florida, she sent me some seeds that she said were supposed to grow in our heat and humidity. I planted them a couple months ago (way too late for our season), but they are the strongest plants I have and were the first to flower. I will save seeds from these this year and they will forever be known as Granny's tomatoes and will always have a place in my garden.

Thank you for keeping the blog up so that we can read her words of wisdom and keep her in our hearts.

Although we never met in person, Granny was like the mother that I never had. She helped me through some very hard times. Her words of wisdom and love will be with me forever. Luv u Granny and Happy Mother’s Day!

God Bless you Mr. Granny....she loved you very very very much!
