June 1, 2010: A Beautiful Day!

I was surprised to see the thermometer's reading of 70F when I got up this morning! And the sun was shining! I'll enjoy this beautiful day after all the cold weather and rainy days we've had lately. I'd better enjoy it fast, as the forecast is for rain the rest of the week.

We did get a bit of sunshine and warmth off and on yesterday. My son-in-law, Bryan, came over to help us with a few things we'd wanted to get done around here. Between rainstorms, he managed to climb up on the roof and blow off the pine needles that had collected on the patio cover. We have three large pine trees in our front yard, along the driveway. They do a good job of keeping our house cool in the summer, and provide a dry place for Annie and Otto to go pee when it's raining (they think they'll melt if they go out in the rain, you know). They do, however, make a horrid mess of our roof, yard and driveway when it rains, snows or blows.

Bryan blew the pine mess off the roof.

It went the entire length of the patio.

Then I cleaned it up.

I raked and raked and then I used the push mower and bagged the debris, which was then used as mulch around the tomatoes behind the shed.

Once that job was done, I talked Bryan into doing something else I'd been wanting done for a couple of years.

Now you see it....

Now you don't.

Can you see what is missing? That was a tiny tree when I first planted it in that corner. Of course, I wasn't expecting to put a dog kennel there at the time. The tree grew, and grew, and was getting all smashed between the kennel and the fence. Besides that, there was a sprinkler riser underneath it, that I had adapted to accept a "Y" adapter, and I had to crawl on hands and knees under the tree to hook up the hoses and adjust the flow. My neighbor, Pat, said she was so happy to see it go. She thought it was such an ugly tree! I didn't think it was ugly at all, just a bit of a nuisance. I planted blue morning glories in that corner, I hope they grow now that they won't have to compete with the tree.

  1. It was nice of Bryan to do all of that for you.

  2. When I first pulled up your post I thought moles had laid seige to your yard! Glad to hear it was just maintenance, LOL!

  3. EG, yes it was. I forgot to mention he cleaned out all the rain gutters, too.

LOL, Erin! Luckily, the only diggers we have around here are Annie and Otto. Lately they have discovered worms in the garden, and they dig them up and roll in them. There are also a few old tree roots near the surface, and they dig at those, too.

  4. That area will be better without the tree :-) I know exactly what you mean about pine trees... we have them all around us and I have a love/hate relationship with them!

  7. I always hate to see trees go, but sometimes, it's for the best.

However, I hope after Pat's comment you looked dead at her and said, "Well, I don't like the hair in your nose, either."

uh....she doesn't read this, does she?

  8. Jan, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. On top of all the mess, I'm also allergic to pine trees!

Sunny, no it's not. I swear it's April. Yesterday it was March ;-)

Kelly, me too. Sometimes when I crawled under that tree, I didn't know if I could crawl back out!

  9. Tree are messy thats for sure. We have lots of huge Maples behind use. I get to clean up flowers in the spring, seeds in the summer, leaves in the fall and branches in the winter! I love my trees :-)

  10. Gran, our gutters are full, again. We have cleaned them twice this year and see we must do it again. The Doug fir needles blow onto the roof from hundreds of feet away. The forecast here in the Willamette valley calls for sun (can you believe sun) by Saturday, and for that I will be thankful. Hope you are having a wonderful week.

  11. Dan, I hated the whirley bird seeds from our maple tree, but I loved the tree and the leaves. I'd have been much happier to lose the pines to that windstorm, but they probably would have taken out the house rather than the fences!

Di, this is our third gutter cleaning of the spring. All this wind and rain...I'm ready for warmth and sunshine!

  12. Don't you ever just take a day off, sit back and drink beer? I get tired just looking at what you've been up to!

  13. Our roof needs a good cleaning too - lots of pine needles and we get moss too. So we blow, broom/scrape, and then apply some moss killer. While up there we do the gutters as well. We try to do that in the summer during the dry season but at the rate we are going this year, it may never happen!

I think the tree removal was smart. It was definitely overwhelming that space.

  14. IG, no. I'm so damned old, I have to hurry and get everything done while I'm still alive!

Kitsap, Mr. Granny spent the better part of yesterday cutting that tree into pieces and bagging it all up. Today I get to clean up all the mess from the garage and driveway. Between rainstorms.
