January 17, 2011 - Harvest Monday

Shhhh, don't tell anyone it's actually Sunday evening, not Monday. I did have another small harvest this week, and I won't be here to blog about it tomorrow. Yes, one more trip to Mexico to the dentist! I was so happy with what she's done so far, I decided to have a little work done on my lower teeth.

Just look at those nice straight upper teeth! Isn't it wonderful what they can do with crowns, veneers and bridges these days? I've always had a couple of "fangs", teeth that didn't have enough room and grew sideways. I wish now that I'd had them fixed years ago. Hopefully I'll have nice straight bottom teeth after tomorrow.

Now, on to the harvest!

I thinned the spinach, as it wasn't growing well at all. The thinnings were big enough to add to a salad. I also pulled the last of the radishes. I won't be planting any more in this garden, as we have decided to head back to Washington just as soon as I finish with the dental work. That means I might start packing as soon as Tuesday!

Since I had the thinning bug, I decided the lettuce patch needed a bit of work, too. I removed at least half of the plants, so maybe the others can grow to a more useful size real soon. The baby greens filled my largest salad bowl to nearly overflowing.

Even after two big bowls were removed for dinner, there was
plenty for at least two more meals.

Other garden goodies included pesto on the pasta, and tomato sauce on the chicken, both made from vegetables/herbs grown and preserved in 2010.

Other preserved 2010 garden foods served this week included peach jam, frozen bell peppers and tomato juice.

  3. Back to Washington you say? Yay! I am sure glad we came home; I just love it here! I'll be starting seeds in the greenhouse as early as next week!

  4. Kelli, more like a grimace, I'd say! It's from a picture I sent the kids, showing teeth rather than smile.

Heidi, I won't be starting anything until mid-March, except some parsley. But I have some room painting/decorating I really want to get done before it's time to garden. Some grandbaby spoiling to do, too.

  6. Be sure to wear your long johns, it's going to get cold again by the end of the week. It's been hitting 60+ the last 3-4 days with lows in the 40s, Wednesday it's projected to be 40 for a high and 20 low.

Your radishes are looking so good.I can't bring myself to buy salad fixings anymore-the homegrown is so much better (and probably better for you!!)

  8. What nice teeth you have Annie!

In Australia, people often venture to Phillipines or Indonesia or China for dental work.. Shame Mexico is so far or id ask you for a recommendation!

About 1/10th the price of dentists in Sydney and you get a holiday.

    Yumm to the pesto.

i must create my blog. summer is nearly over but i collected lotsa pics. only problem was the virus/blight or whatever it is on the tomatoes. As you probably know Australia has had the wettest, coolest summer .. not one heat wave and lotsa rain, that unfortunately killed about 20 people in Queensland.

    Travel safely back !

  11. Sarada, thank you. I'm not usually so anxious to leave the warm weather, but I'm really lonesome for my family this year.

David, I expect you to warm that weather up between Feb 1-14. I want to be home by Valentine's Day ;-)

Oh, Sue, you know my bark is worse than my bite!

SydneyGardener, yes, I'd never have had such extensive dental work in the states. An acquaintance is having all his teeth pulled, and implants put in. He had an estimate of $27000 in the states, and will have it done in Mexico for around $5000.

Australia certainly has been hit hard by floods. How terrible!

Robin, thank you. I have to get home and begin matchmaking. We only have about 18 years or so to get those grandkids of ours together, LOL!

  16. Ok, I just have to tell you this...that picture reminds me of Mrs. Doubtfire. Ha! I may even start calling you that...hehe

  17. Very pretty! I'm lucky in that my lower teeth don't really show much when I smile, those are the crooked ones!

  18. Your salad greens put me to shame. I am planting more lettuce which should have done to begin with.

  19. EG, I'd like you to know I'm not as wide as Mrs. Doubtfire, nor am I as masculine. LOL

Erin, my lower ones don't show much, either, but I have a lower partial that never matched the color of my teeth (done by a USA dentist for a lot more $$$ than I'm paying for this one). I'm having it redone, and was supposed to get it this afternoon....the dental lab was too busy, and it won't be ready until Wednesday! One more trip. It's always one more trip. There were soooo many people down there today! It took 45 minutes of standing in line at the border, to get back out.

    ********
Lorie, The Mom & Kitsap, thanks.

    ********
Char, I don't know why it doesn't grow better here. Just 100 miles away they grow gorgeous big heads through the winter. Maybe the thinning will help it out.

  20. Pretty lettuce and radishes. And whoohoo to getting home early. I'm sure you will be happy to get home and to have a big garden again. Or at least to see the kiddies.
