February 28, 2011 - Today's Super Buys

With the coupons in my hot little hand, I headed for Fred Meyer's seed racks. It was raining, and I drove our new car. You know, the one we bought last summer, that's been sitting in the garage for the last 4-1/2 months. I turned on the windshield wipers, and they didn't work! I had to keep pushing the button on the end of the lever, which would squirt and wipe. I was rather upset to say the least. Then Mr. Granny got out the manual, and read aloud how to work the wipers. Duh.....on the the Ranger and my old Intrepid, all I had to do was turn the end of the lever. On the Malibu, you have to lift up on it, just like the turn signal!

I bought ten packets of seeds, for 50% off the regular price of $19.10, for a total expenditure of $9.55. Hopefully, I'll have more flowers in the garden this year.

Then we headed for Ace Hardware, and...TA-DA!!!

I got a large bag of potting mix, probably enough for all the soil blocks I'll be making, and another seed starter tray. Total cost....are you ready? Just $1.03 for everything! You can't beat that deal with a stick!

That put me in a pretty good mood, so I made Mr. Granny a lemon meringue pie. I swear, the crust was the lightest, tenderest I've ever made. I was just telling Robin it floated right up to the ceiling, it was that light!

You are going to have some nice looking transplants in a couple weeks.

  2. Lynda, I peeked tonight, and the mesclun was already sprouting! It's only been 24 hours since it was planted!

Christian, I had to bite my lip until it was almost bleeding, but I didn't buy any more tomato seeds! I mean, really, ten varieties are quite enough. Right?

  4. Meems, I need to put in a change of address every year! That's how I got the $10 Ace coupon ;-) Plus, I got half a year's rent back from the PO box!

  6. Alison, I have to admit, I am getting my share of that pie!

  7. I have that packet of morning glory seeds, too -- even though they grow wild here on this lot. They're just too beautiful to resist.
The pie is to beautiful to resist, too. All that saved me from having two large slices was the distance :-)

  10. Mmmm that pie looks amazing! I also have 'seed fever'! In fact I just posted about it a few days ago.. I wonder if there's a 12-step program for 'seed-a-holics'? :)

  11. I haven't had a lemon meringue pie in I don't know how long. I think I've only made it once or twice and it used to be my favorite, too.

  12. That's a great deal! I play that coupon game for all the craft & fabric stores, refusing to walk in the door without one. I bet Mr. Granny was one happy guy eating that!

  13. Isn't that seed sale at Fredmeyer great, we always load up on a few packs...and I really like the Ed Hume seeds as they always do well for us. Can't wait to see all of your flowers in bloom.:)

  17. Dianefaith, I grew those morning glories the last two years. In 2009, they were breathtaking, but last year, they didn't bloom until very late, and one large planting not at all. We only got to enjoy about a week of Heavenly Blue before we left for AZ. Fingers crossed we have a better growing year for them in 2011.

The Mom & Robin, it was good...too bad you weren't closer, I'd have shared!

YRVG, if there were a 12-step program, I'm afraid there would be too many of us to handle! I can think of worse addictions, though ;-)

I just visited your blog, and became a follower. It's getting so I need a 12-step program for following blogs. There are so many really good ones to read each day, I don't have much time for mundane chores......like cleaning house!

Marcia, it would have been much better with my own fresh lemons. I don't know if that will ever happen, though.

    ********
Erin, I love buying things that are on sale, PLUS having a coupon for them!

Mr. H., I never have enough room for all the flowers and veggies I want to grow. Mr. Granny has this thing about growing grass in the back yard. I keep telling him you can't eat grass! I always have good luck with the Ed Hume seeds, and have used them for many years.

    ********
Kitsap, come on over to my side of the state and I'll serve you a slice!

    ********
Barbie, here ya go! Now, did that pie taste like air? ;-)

    Thanks Sarada!

  18. Oh Granny. Ship me some of that yummy pie, will you? I love lemon meringue. If you do I'll share the pizza I'm making right now.

  19. Sounds good to me, Daphne. We went out for lunch today, and Mr. Granny ordered lemon meringue pie! He said it didn't even come close to being as good as mine :-)

  20. I think I've grown those carrots. I ran out of Territorial's and picked up Ed Hume's a few years ago. Still have some. Funny, back in the 80s when my mom was an avid veggie gardener, she and Ed Hume were best bud's. He used to do a show at her TV station.

Anyway, had to say Lemon Meringue is is my Favorite pie! And I DO live close enough to come over for desert! hehe. It looks amazing, and I love a light crust. Bravo!

  21. Sinfonian, I've used Ed Hume seeds for many years, and they always perform well and the prices are reasonable...especially during Fred Meyer's half price sale!

I remember you loving anything lemon. My little lemon tree had 7 lemons on it, but they all dropped off. The last one, one I'd held out some hope for, dropped off today.
