April 20, 2011 - I Might Be Old, But.....

I know you've heard it. The elderly lady or gentleman declaring "I might be old, but I'm not stupid!"

Well, I'm here to say "I might be old, and I might be getting stupid!"

Case in point. Look at the following photo of the controls to a double oven. Look at the selector knobs. Go ahead, click on the picture to make it larger, then take a good look. Pay special attention to the position of the bake and broil settings on each knob. See how the settings are completely opposite of each other?

They're my double ovens. I've been baking in them for twenty-two (22) years. So why, when using both ovens today, did I bake one pan of cinnamon rolls for 20 minutes in the bottom oven, and broil the other pan of cinnamon rolls for 20 minutes in the top oven? Why? Because "I'm old, and I'm getting stupid!"

At least I'm not stupid enough to let the burnt rolls go completely to waste. I cut off the tops, then flipped them over and frosted the bottoms. We devoured them with our dinner!

Luckily, the burnt buns (back) were the last ones made, and there were only five of them in that pan. The other two pans of a dozen properly baked cinnamon rolls turned out perfectly fine.

We had a garden dinner tonight. I picked the first of the lovely young greens for a big salad, and cooked barbecued chicken wings, using home made barbecue sauce from last year's garden. We had three varieties of lettuce in the salad, Red Sails, Summercrisp and Yugoslavian Red Butterhead, and baby Tyee spinach leaves.

The salad was tossed with a simple vinaigrette. It was good. No, it was great.

  2. That's a mistake I would do! At least they were salvagable. They look yummy.

  3. Roasted, I'm ready to get everything off the shelves and into the garden. I want a couple of warm days so I don't have to use a magnifying glass to see the carrots emerging!

Meems, Mr. Granny said "Whew, couldn't you smell them burning?" Duh...if I'd smelled them, I'd have taken them out of the oven!

  4. Well at least you didn't let them go to waste!! I love cinnamon rolls. My doctor would agree with this assessment!
    :D

  5. Wow, those controls are very bad indeed. Like they wanted to mess with your mind. If they weren't 20+ years old, I'd get your money back, hehe. Sorry about your burnt buns, I'm sure they tasted great slathered with icing.

Great looking harvest. Way to go! Yum! Makes me want to harvest a salad tomorrow, even if it'll only have greens and carrots.

  6. Something's happening to my autopilot, too. It's not working nearly as well as it did a few years ago.
Would you please come here and garden and cook for me? I wanted to dive right in to your dinner pictures.

  7. Hey, it happens. Last week while I was out with the kids I gathered my trash and chunked it in the public trash bin. I got to my car and tried to open my door with the trash.

I had thrown the keys in the bin instead. I had to go dumpster diving to retrieve them. YUCKY!!!

  8. I don't think that YOU are the stupid one! Why on earth would they have bake in a different position??? I would probably be doing that all the time!

  9. What a creative save. Looks yummy!

  10. Stuff happens but at least they were salvageable! The perfect pan of rolls looks ... well... PERFECT! :D

The salad and the barbeque wings look delicious. Our greens are FINALLY starting to produce enough that we can do light harvests more regularly. The return of fresh salads could not happen soon enough for me this year.

  11. That is definitely something I would do LOL! I still stand in front of my burners waiting for the right one to glow when I turn it on, too many times I've turned the knob and walked away and returned to glowing circles with nothing on them, I still blame it on the kids, they took all my brain cells when then entered the world!

  13. Sue, I just got back into my size 12 jeans, comfortably, and I'm trying very hard to get backup to a 14. Yes. Yes I am.

Sinfonian, at least you have carrots! It won't be long before I have radishes.

Dianefaith, have you noticed your car having a one track mind lately? No matter where I'm heading in mine, it always goes straight to the grocery store.

    ********
Oh, Ribbit, LOL! And you're not even old!

    ********
Robin, isn't that crazy? I normally don't use two ovens, so even after 20-some years I have to really pay attention to those knobs.

    ********
Lorie, they were. I ate two of them, just to drown my sorrows over burning them ;-)

Kitsap, I barely made a dent in the greens yesterday, so there are more salads out there for us and cookie. I did see leaf miner eggs on the spinach though. It is some that's not under cover, so I hope the greens under the netting escape them.

Erin, I'm still trying to adjust to the new cook top. One large burner seems to get and stay way to hot. I tend to use it for boiling only, and use the other one for frying. The really good thing about it is that the shiny black surface is a great place to take photos of the food! I think my dinner looked even better than it tasted.

Thanks, Ginny. I won't take my stupid pill today. Promise.

  14. I'd tell you all the stupid things I've done, but I can't remember any of them right now. I'd say my memory was bad because I'm getting older, but I forgot my name once when I was in my 30s so its just me. Sad.

  15. Your cinnamon rolls make me drool. I'm a whore for yeast rolls, sweet or savory. lol Wonderful looking dinner :)

  16. Daphne, my memory is still good enough to remember the stupid things I do ;-)

Kalena Michele, I'm heading for one right now, to enjoy with my morning coffee. Wish you were here!

  17. I do something similar with my stove...I turn on the wrong burner all the time. But it's not my fault...the dials on the stove are backwards from what they ought to be! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

The rolls have me drooling! And I want to make BBQ sauce, too!!...do you have the recipe posted somewhere?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Deb, I don't have the recipe, but it's the one in the Ball Blue Book with one difference. I didn't care for it that much, so I added a big bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce to it, brought it back up to a boil and then put it in the jars and processed it. It was really good, and I'll make it the same this year! I'd purchased the SBR sauce on sale, and with coupons, so it had only cost me $1 for the large size. I hoe I can find it for that price again, LOL!

  19. The salad looks great!

And I just happened to plant some spinach yesterday. I'm going to write a post about it later today. I don't even know if now is the right time to plant spinach or if it's too late, but I was just so excited to be planting something I did it anyway.

By the way Granny, those rolls, burnt or not, I would have gobbled them done. :P

  20. You are adorable, but not stupid at all. The knobs on most stoves don't seem to be designed to be intuitive to use. I know I always have to think twice about mine!

The cinnamon rolls look delicious, by the way.

    Happy Easter!
