Finally! I have a harvest to share today, albeit a small one.
On April 20, I harvested the first greens from the Washington garden. They consisted of 7 ounces (total) of Red Sails, Summercrisp and Yugoslavian red Butterhead lettuces, and Tyee spinach. It was such a pretty rainbow of colors, deserving of two photos.
Yesterday, April 24th., I harvested 8 ounces (total) of Little Gem, Buttercrunch and unknown varieties of mixed lettuces.Total harvest for the week: 15 ounces

Yeah for lettuce! Very pretty. I picked out last bit of lettuce this past week. The lettuce didn't like the warm temps.
ReplyDeleteYay your first harvest and already you have 15oz. I love all the mixed colors. I think this coming week I'll pick my first lettuce. It is getting big enough.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Everett, Washington and was hoping to be eating salad by now but the slugs got all of it. I'm trying a 3rd time to get salad in the soil blocks instead of direct seeding them. Meanwhile, beer bash in my garden has taken out some fat slugs. They got most of my peas too, that has never happened to me before. SO happy to see that someone got beautiful greens in Washington.
ReplyDeleteKatrina, I'm hoping the location where most of my lettuce is will make it grow longer before bolting, as it gets afternoon shade.I also have replacement seedlings that will be ready to take over as this batch matures.

Daphne, my little lettuce bed is producing enough for us and Cookie now. I can pick outer leaves from half the bed at a time, for two pickings a week.
Absolutely beautiful! I just love how pretty those lettuces are! I was hoping to have salads out of my ears by this point, but so far, the only lettuce showing any real sign of growth is the stuff seeded inside, and the stuff growing in my Aerogarden. It's fun to get to watch yours grow!

ReplyDeleteRainsong, this year I am planting my lettuces farther apart than I normally do, giving the slugs less room to hide. It had a lot of slug damage last year, too. I'm hoping the straw I'm using on the paths doesn't become a hiding place for more slugs this year.

Ginny, what about all those tons of greens you were picking earlier! I'd say your harvest is well ahead of mine for the year. granted, I didn't count what I grew in the AZ garden. I didn't have my scale down there!

ReplyDeleteI hope so, Villager. My brassica are way larger than they were at this time last year, the cool weather has been great for them. Maybe soon I'll be out there picking strawberries and pulling radishes! If we could just get some days in the 70s, and nights in the 50s, the garden would really take off.
ReplyDeleteWonderful harvest! I picked lettuce, broccoli, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, carrots, spring onions, rhubarb and strawberries. Didn't take one picture and forgot to weigh...too many people here for Easter: but they ate well!

ReplyDeleteThanks, Kris. This week's harvest contained five known varieties, and three unknown from a mix. I still have Iceberg and Parris Island Cos that haven't been picked yet, so that's my "at least ten varieties". I'm quite sure there are even more.

ReplyDeleteWhat a picture perfect bowl of greens! I am hoping to do the first real harvest of lettuces this coming week. I have been stealing a large leaf or two occassionally to dress up a hamburger for dinner but have not had enough to do a lettuce salad (yet). I noticed this evening though that the combination of some milder temps and the sunshine we had on Saturday were like a shot of tonic to all the greens - particularly the lettuce bed.

That is just beautiful! I love Little Gem , I grow that in my potager. We have too much rain and our lettuce is just starting to take off the past few weeks. I can hardly wait...:-) Roberta

ReplyDeleteRoberta, my Little Gem is just beautiful, and doing well under the bird protection. Some of my lettuces that are out in the open garden aren't faring as well. As usual, the birds are eating the green varieties, but leaving the red leafs untouched. You'd think I'd learn and only plant the red!

ReplyDeleteChopinandmysaucepan, that's an easy one. We like an oil, vinegar (cider or balsamic) and sugar dressing on our garden fresh lettuce. I keep a container of that in the fridge, and always give it a quick whirl in the blender before dressing the salad, so the oil and vinegar don't separate. Our other favorite is a sweet & sour hot bacon dressing.
