September 5, 2011 - Harvest Monday

Where has the week gone? I almost didn't get my Harvest Monday post done today, I've been so busy this week. Not so busy in the garden, but busy getting my new laptop set up and my programs installed. Busy using Windows 7 after using WinXP for so many years. Busy trying to learn to do without Outlook Express for my email and newsgroups, and setting up Windows Live Mail, which I'm not liking so much. So far I'm loving the new computer for its speed, not to mention things like USB ports and CD/DVD drives that actually work. I'm not loving that I can no longer run many of my beloved older programs on this new 64-bit operating system. I have a couple that I use daily, so I have to keep the old laptop on standby. That's not something I wanted to do.

Anyway, on to the week's harvest.

8/29 - 22 oz. pole beans, 11 oz. carrots.

8/29 -112 oz. tomatoes, 17 oz. strawberries.

Yesterday, all the kids came over for a barbecue. It was a continuation of our 49th anniversary celebration, and they brought all the food and drinks and son-in-law Bryan did the grilling. A good time was had by all, including the four legged pets. Lola, Scott and Kris' new puppy, came of course. She is getting such long legs! I know, all dogs' legs look long compared to the dachshunds, Annie & Otto. Lola ran and played most of the day, but it finally became too much for her. She disappeared, and a frantic search found her sound asleep in the flower bed.....

Little Lola, sound asleep under a flower.

The end of Lola's busy day.

  1. Looks like your garden is still going strong. Those strawberries have really put out good for you. I have been busy too and seems like there are many distractions from my gardening these days.

  4. Oh my gosh... Lola is just too darling for words.

Beautiful harvests (as always!) this week. It looks like your tomatoes are turning on the production again. We have a warm up on this side of the state this week and I am hoping I get a little ramp up on the tomatoes myself.

Totally jealous of the butternut squash. My plants are going nuts now but WAY too late in the season. All the squash plants were a bit of bust for me this year because of the cool summer we had. This past week and coming week are the only warm (normal) temp days we have had virtually all summer. Just a little too late unfortunately for most of the long maturing items. Oh well... I will enjoy seeing yours!

  6. Those tomatoes are really pouring in for you now, they look fantastic. What will you do with all the Butternut Squash? I'm looking for an idea but I think I'll end up making some breads with it all and sticking them in the freezer LOL (the usual for me)

  7. Kris, I did spend a couple of hours doing some "early fall cleanup", but there really isn't that much to do right now. It seems like in-house projects are keeping me busy, so it's good the weeds aren't growing to quickly!

Yes, Ginny, I'm truly blessed. I'd be more truly blessed if I had all of your pear butter ;-)

Mrs. Pickles, I'm really loving having a puppy that visits, then goes home to poop on someone else's floor!

Kitsap, isn't she precious? I'm glad Otto and Annie like/tolerate her.

It looks like I have three more small butternuts left in the garden, but I noticed one of them had split. I've never had them do that before. I wish they'd hurry and ripen, as the vines are looking bad now.

Erin, that's a lot fewer butternuts than I got last year, and we used every single one of them. In fact, I have one container in the freezer, I've been saving for a special occasion. Most of them wintered fine, I just had to cook, mash and freeze the last few when we got home from AZ mid-February. We like them baked with butter and brown sugar, mashed with butter and brown sugar, or used like pumpkin in anything that calls for that. When I mash and freeze it, I always thaw then drain it a bit in a colander, as it gets watery.

  8. Nice that you have a new computer! It is always hard changing things over and learning new things but you get use to it pretty quick! Going from Outlook to Live was kinda hard for me too, but I don't even notice anymore! Live has some pretty cool things.
Happy anniversary! Glad you and your family got to enjoy together!

  9. That's a lovely harvest as usual. I really like that squash! I really hope your new computer works out well for you, and that you can find a way to run those old programs you like on your new computer.

  10. Those tiny tomatoe look like candy Nice harvest in general looks like things are picking up for you. I too have some late season butternut; hopefully they mature before the vines give up.

  11. Jody, I think the only way I could run the programs would be to partition the hard drive and install XP on it. I don't think I want to do that :-O

David, I'm happy my butternut decided to ripen for me! I really didn't think it had a chance.

  13. Thank you, Kelli! Yes, she sure is a cutie now....not sure what she's going to look like when she grows up. Her legs are getting awfully long for the rest of her!

  14. Great harvest Granny! The carrots are very tempting looking. I neglected to plant any this year. Lola looks very sweet!

  15. Thank you, Dan. I'm eating one of those carrots right now, and it's really sweet.....as is Lola!

  16. Very nice harvests this week Granny! I don't like the newer windows version at all! Thank goodness, it's not on the computer that I use on a daily basis!

It sounds like you had a very nice celebration with your family! Boy, that grandbaby of yours is a cutie for sure!

  17. What a wonderful garden harvest. And the little Lola asleep is just too cute.

  18. Thank you, Robin & Karen. I think Lola is a keeper :-)

I'm not minding Windows 7 at all, other than the email and not being able to run my older programs. The one I use most could be updated, and it's not that I'm cheap, but I prefer the old version and hate the newer one.

  19. I never liked 'upgrading' because I always get so used to whatever operating system I currently have.. eventually I get the hang of it tho and I usually end up liking it after all. :D

Sweet sweet puppy!! Still has that puppy breath too I bet. :)

Those tomatoes are making my mouth water! yummmmm!

  20. Wendy, puppy breath yes...and now she's getting puppy teeth! They weaned her off the bottle this week, and Scott says she eats like a horse, and has turned into the ultimate poop machine.

  21. Awwwww how cute.

Oh and nice harvest Granny. I think my butternuts will finally ripen in time. I'm hoping.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I hope so, Daphne. I only see 2-3 small ones left on my vines, but we're experiencing a record breaking heat spell now so I'm sure they'll ripen.

  23. I am going to fly you out to my neck of the woods so that you can work your carrot magic on my garden. I just cannot get those things to grow, and yours are beautiful!

And how cute! If I were that tiny, I think I would choose to cuddle up underneath a flower, too. That pup has the right idea.

  24. LOL, Prairie Cat, I've had some really bad carrots this year, too. Only my late planted ones look nice, the early ones looked like aliens.
