Wind woes, oh my! I spent a day last week cleaning up the pine mess after one of our all too frequent wind storms. I raked out the flower beds and the entire front yard, swept the driveway and front porch, and chopped all of the leaves with the leaf sucker vacuum. Everything looked so nice and tidy. Then yesterday this happened......
Leaves, pine boughs, pine needles and pine cones......
Pine mess and neighbor's leaves everywhere!
The patio is covered with dirt and littered with leaves.
The back yard is quite clean, as the leaves all blew up against the side fence where they will be easily vacuumed up. The plastic covering the spinach bed took a bit of a beating though. I had removed it earlier in the day, during a short rain, then bungeed it down to keep the wind from drying it out. I guess I should have used a few more bungee cords. I need to buy a new sheet of plastic and do a proper one piece cover this week.
The mess I have to clean up today doesn't compare to what happened elsewhere around the Tri-Cities area, where there were downed trees and power lines, and our newest elementary school, under construction since June, collapsed.
We have always suffered from high winds in this area, but I really think they have been more frequent this past year than ever before. I know I've had to do much more cleanup than in the past. I'm surprised our pine trees aren't naked by now, they've lost so many branches!
When we first moved here I was shocked and confused as to why buildings were erected so fast. I get it now ... the wind here is BRU_TAL! Back home in NC, takes a hurricane/tornado to get damaging winds like we get here in Iowa. I'm not sure if we haven't had as much wind as in years past or if I've finally gotten used to it.
ReplyDeleteDo know I want the wind break built again on the front porch. It's fierce today.
Teresa, I think I hate the wind more than anything. We've lost roofing twice on this house, had the huge maple tree downed, and there is always mess from the pines. I also worry that one of those pine trees might come down on the house some day. I'm especially fearful of that since the next door neighbor's pines went down last spring.
DeleteOh No, what a bummer about the school, and your recently cleaned-up garden. I have a similar mess to clean up. I thought my makeshift hoophouse was going to let go and flap away like an albatross.
ReplyDeleteAlison, I'm surprised my plastic sheeting just blew loose and didn't rip and shred in that wind! It looks like we're going to get another storm this week, lots of rain for you and possible snow for us. I'm not ready for the cold!
DeleteWow, that is something! I must say that I don't miss the winds we had in Moses Lake, or the "east gorge" winds we had in Vancouver, WA. We had some 50 mph straight line winds here last week, but little damage (I lost 3 hay tarps is all.)
ReplyDeleteHang in there!
Ray, I think this windstorm clocked in around 60 MPH. It was strong enough to uproot a few trees.
DeleteCongratulations on reaching your goal! Wow, 1000 pounds is a lot. So sorry for the mess that the wind left behind.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rachel.
DeleteCongrats on your 1000 pounds. That is sure a lot of veggies to eat. But then you do feed your whole family. I've found since my daughter has come home the carrots are disappearing fast. Usually I don't share much with my family since none of them lived close. I think I had 15 rows of carrots in my bed. We have eaten five of them and hasn't been that long since I started picking. I don't think they will last the winter. I'll have to make sure I have enough for chicken pot pie though. I'll process and hide them. She will just have to resort to store bought.
ReplyDeleteDaphne, I had a real carrot shortage this year. I need to double (or quadruple) the carrots and cut back by at least half on the green beans and peppers!
DeleteCongratulations on reaching your goal. We get winds but nothing like you have been having. That would be discouraging. Nancy
ReplyDeleteYes it is discouraging, Nancy. It's such a job to clean it all up and then it happens all over again.
DeleteGood thing the school toppled now. Must have been deficient in something!
ReplyDeleteAll that debris... looks like work to me!
Congrats on the yearly harvest!
Thanks, Cloud.
Deletel don't know how those durn pine trees of yours have ANY needles left after this year. What are ya doing, honey--glue-ing them back up ????
ReplyDeleteSure hope you get a break . My gosh!
And congrats on hitting the 1000 pound mark. As if we had a doubt, Wonder Woman!!
:D
LOL, Sue! Now I have a vision of me, up in a tree, gluing pine boughs back on the trees!
Delete1000 lbs?? Holy cow that's amazing. You inspire us all! If I ever get 1000 lbs, I'm not sure what we'd do with it all, ha.
ReplyDeleteThat's some kind of wind too. Now I hope Mr. Granny assisted in cleaning up the mess and didn't leave it all to you. I'm with Cloud, if the school collapsed like this (and it wasn't like a tornado something), they didn't do something right.
Haha, 1st. Man! "Mr. Granny" and "help" shall not be used in the same sentence when it comes to yard work. While Granny toiled, Mr. G watched football then took a nap! He did wander out at half time and use the pruning shears to shorten few of the larger branches, That may have taken all of 5-10 minutes.
DeleteOH MY!! that must have been quite the wind storm!
ReplyDeleteIt seems as though it's getting to be quite a normal occurrence recently, Mrs. P. I've never had to do this much yard cleanup before, and winter isn't even officially here yet!
