It's sweet, Rachel. I planted more yesterday, but it might be able to go out in the garden rather than in the window. This pot has been set outside nearly every day this week, so it's growing quite well. I should get another salad this week!
You are an inspiration Granny! We have lettuce that is going from lights to windowsill tomorrow. It will be a few more days before we have a harvest. You certainly set the pace
What? Is this spring already? How can you have a lettuce harvest already? I haven't even started planting anything. I really need to hustle. But there's still a foot of snow outside. Making you believe you have months to go. Thanks for the reminder, Granny! Love ya!
Mrs. R., it's spring in Granny's house! If Mother Nature won't cooperate, I'll just take matters into my own hands. Oh, by the way, my windowsill tomatoes are showing some tiny buds already!
Small is not an issue - you have the satisfaction of being able to eat something that you personally have grown! Windowsill growing keeps us sane at the times when we are pining for the outdoor variety. I'm just about to take the 5th cut from my little tray of Mesclun, which has been absolutely fantastic.
So true, Mark. Even that small amount of home grown lettuce, added to my purchased greens, make our salads taste better! I have a feeling my laundry room window will be filled with containers of lettuce next winter!
You make me jealous. First that you have a good windowsill to grow lettuce. This house has nothing. And second because you are eating fresh lettuce. Yum.
Daphne, having the plant shelves and lights in the laundry room helps. I can move the lettuce from window to lights or, lately, right outside on days when the temps are over 40F. I wish I had more room in that window!
I missed where your Brussels Sprouts will stand - love those baby cabbages on poles! Oh, also, are your onion plantings going in as staggered plantings?
Barry, my husband said if I ever feed him another Brussels sprout, he's running away from home! I've tried them steamed, roasted, pan grilled, marinated.....they end up in the garbage every time! He hates broccoli, too. However, I will not give up my broccoli!
Onions will all be planted at the same time, around March 15-April 1. I'll pull a lot of them early, as scallions and larger salad onions.
I do declare! no need in this one complaining about pain,,, you' ll put one to shame.. when i look at what your doing i go spastic.I'm hoping to get half as much done this spring.Love ya! keep on pushing, Ginny
I love that first clipping of young lettuce!

ReplyDeleteI don't know if the small harvest is worth it, Jody, but it keeps me busy until I can actually get out there and plant something!
