June 14, 2011 - The Project

The main objective of The Project is nearly done. It needs a few finishing touches, but it definitely meets with the approval of the recipient.

This:

Became this:

Now I'm left with this:

That was a lot of work for a ten-year-old rabbit who has a life expectancy of 7-10 years! Of course, building his retirement abode was the easy part. When I painted all those boards, I decided the trim needed painting too, then I decided to change the color, so now I have to paint all the trim on the entire house! Well, at least the back of the house for now. I can probably get away with not painting the front.

The Idiot Gardener said.....
I bet you're building a dwarf-dungeon.
You see, I can spot these things!

Spot on, IG! Cookie is a Netherlands Dwarf rabbit!

  1. What a wonderful retirement home for Cookie! Great job Granny! You better get the rest of the trim painted before canning season starts!

  2. Aw, it's a rabbit run! Cookie is adorable. I'm sure your next bunny will appreciate it too. You have to have a next bunny, who else will eat all that extra lettuce?

Well done, Granny! You deserve dinner out! I always reward myself with dinner out when I accomplish something like this.

  3. Robin, I'll be out there first thing in the morning! I'm too hot and too tired now, but the patio mess is almost all cleaned up.

Alison, no more bunnies for us. Huh-uh. Honestly, any pet we might get now would probably outlive us, which would be a cruel thing to do to the animal.

I'm all for dinner out, especially since I didn't thaw anything to cook! It's either that or corn dogs ;-)

  4. Nicely done but again one of those projects that turns to more work. I am sure cookie appreciates it however.

  5. Wilderness, I used all leftover lumber, so I just had to make it fit as best I could. A little caulk touched up with paint will help a lot!

  6. Love it when pet bunnies have plenty of running around space. Well done! My 3 have portable dog kennel fencing attached to their hutch. They have dug a huge burrow - dug out a mountain of sand. I'm afraid the whole area might collapse one day. They are very close to my garden - perhaps that is where they are heading. :)

  7. Melissa, Cookie has always been a house bunny. However, in his old age he has forgotten to be house broken, so he has been confined to his cage for the past two years. I would take him out to the yard to a small pen when the weather was nice, but he just went into his carry cage and wouldn't come out. He seems to love his new digs, he's been out on the rug all afternoon.

  8. Fantastic! Hey i bought a car based on the size of my 9 year old Bernese Mountain Dog that had a life expectancy of 6-8 years LOL!

  9. He is so cute! I bet he will love to stretch out a bit now.

  10. Aw, that's the cutest thing! Now I want one! :o) That would be something great for some baby chicks :o) Hmmm wonder how I could hide them as they grew bigger..Hmm I'm thinking ..Cecil would veto even the thought :o(

  12. Great bunny run. Cookie will love it.

Just had to post because my patio looks far worse than yours and I need to hold a Father's day party there Sunday. Hehe

  13. Erin, so what's unusual about that? We're looking at a new pickup, with four doors and a full back seat just for Annie and Otto. They're too crowded in the extended cab Ranger ;-)

    ********
Katrina, he's been in it all afternoon, and he's still outside the travel cage, all stretched out in front of his food/water dish. I think he's liking it!

    ********
Ginny, I don't think I could put up with chickens on the patio, LOL! We used to have a pet rooster, and he had to go live on a farm when he started pooping on my patio table! At least I didn't turn him into dinner, even though his name was Dinner.

    ********
Daphne, I'm so pooped, I'm about ready to crawl in there next to him!

    ********
Sinfonian, I'm happy to say my patio is just about cleaned up now. I still have the paint cans, brushes and ladder, but everything else got picked up and put away.

  14. very cool! Your bunny should be very happy!

  15. Charmcity, he is soooo chilled out on his rug, in front of his dish! I can tell he's so much happier. He's also much closer to us, as we spend a lot of time out there.

  16. Wow! Cookie is one blessed rabbit!

  17. Aw, what a great retirement resort! :)

I, too, have a senior bunny. He's a similar color, but definitely not a dwarf! (He weighs over 8 lbs!)

  18. Cookie has great new digs and it sounds like he is totally enjoying it. I knew your project had something to do with the porch and some screening - but I did not guess it was for Cookie... just thought you might be screening in the porch in general. What a great project and the recipient is obviously grateful. :D

  19. Liisa and ZZ, he was out on his rug when I got up this morning. I wonder if he even went into his hidey-house to sleep last night!

    ********
Renee, I don't think Cookie weighs even 2 pounds now. He's smaller and bonier in his old age, but still spry and healthy. He has never been sick a day in his nearly ten years. Age has caused him to develop an attitude though, he just usually wants to be left alone. Eating and pooping are his life.

  20. to care for a creature in their golden years is entirely reasonable. we disrupted our household & who sleeps where during the day so my 18-year-old kitty can sleep where she wants, undisturbed by younger upstarts. very sweet.

i just hope this project doesn't turn into, "oh now we have to paint the entire house, re-roof, pave the driveway, put in a new fence, ..."

    ReplyDelete
  21. Donna, the project has already turned into "paint all the trim (and probably most of the siding) on the back of the house, repair that crack in the concrete on the patio, get rid of that awful chair and chaise, put off reroofing the patio until after the rabbit is gone (not removing the roof over his head)". I'm sure there will be more before I'm finished!

  22. What a lucky bunny- my Buns would be quite jealous if I shared this post with him! GO COOKIE!

  23. Kelly, you'd better go make your bunny a retirement condo!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, maybe once Cookie does find it, you won't ever be able to get Cookie out.

  25. Awww, Cookie is so lucky to have such nice digs in his old age. Great job on your creativity!
