November 4, 2013 - Wind Mess Cleanup

Luckily the weather was sunny, rather warm and relatively calm yesterday, so I could begin cleaning up all the mess from the previous day's windstorm.

I raked it all up and bagged it, then used the leaf blower for the final cleanup.  Unfortunately this will all go to the landfill, as it was too full of large twigs and branches to chop up for the compost pile.  I do so need a chipper-shredder!

 All cleaned up again.....for now.

I also got a new piece of 4 mil plastic for the spinach bed, cut and stapled on the end pieces, then used one large piece to cover the back, top and front.  I put in four more hooks for extra bungee straps to hold it down during windstorms, and it's all weighted down on the front edge to allow for easy removal by just rolling it up on that 1x2 board that's stapled to the front.  The spinach got a good sprinkling from the watering can, then was covered up for the night.

The patio and the side yard mess will have to wait for another day.  I was too tired to tackle it.  At least this is mostly leaves, except for a few large limbs from the neighbor's sycamore, so I can pick them up with the mower and dump them in the compost.

  1. Very tidy! I admire your dedication. The leaves in my garden right now are soggy wet, and not easy to sweep up (otherwise I would follow your example. Honest...)

    1. Well, Mark, I'm taking a tea break from cleaning up the side yard right now. I think the raking, mowing and hauling those chopped leaves out to the compost is harder work than I did yesterday!

  2. Sometimes it seems never ending picking up all those leaves. We too have had lots of blustery days and were without power for over 2 days last week. Still it seems to have calmed down today and I hope your weather does also.

    1. Sarah, we are enjoying calm, sunny weather right now, so I have to work fast. It's supposed to start raining later today, and it might be a while before I can get back at the cleanup!

  3. What a mess to clean up. Luckily for us we don't have much of a yard so not too much to rake up. For us the pine needles are more of a problem than leaves are usually.

    1. Daphne, there is a ton of pine needles in that pile, all the leaves came from the neighbor's sycamore trees. I'm going to remove the mulch from the front flower beds next year, as I can't keep the pine needles raked out of them. I decided bare dirt is the way to go. Not very pleasing to look at, but a lot easier to clean up after these storms hit.

  4. I've just been catching up on your posts Granny! Sorry you've had to deal with all that wind, but you sure have done a good job of it! Congrats on reaching your 1000 pounds. I bought a leaf vac because of a post you wrote about using one last year, and I must say, it was a great investment. Much easier for me to get those leaves chopped and into the garden and compost piles than what I was doing before.

    1. Nutmeg, I'm using the push mower and bagging these leaves, as there were just too many to tackle with the leaf vacuum. At least I'll be able to use it along the fence line and on the patio.

  5. Wow, Granny, that's a lot of work! We've been bagging our leaves, too, in those big brown bags for the township to collect and compost. My 2 compost bins can't take anymore. Of course, I'll regret it when I see them shrink to nothing by next spring! Now, if only I had a shredder. Oh, the things we all wish for! Can't have them all, can we? :-)

    1. Mrs. R., I did get the compost bin half filled with chopped leaves today, bagged two more to run through the leaf sucker on another day, and told my neighbor to dump all of her chopped leaves and grass clippings into my bin when she mows tomorrow, so that puts me on the way to next years good compost! I am just worn completely out after two days of this! I see a looooong hot bubble bath in my near future. After I cook dinner and clean the kitchen, of course. :-)
