February 3, 2009: We Have Liftoff! ....er...Lettuce!

Ha! remember when I planted the little Arizona salad garden and Mr. H said it would never grow? Well, I just picked the first greens this morning, all 2 1/2 ounces of them! That doesn't sound like a lot, but those same baby greens would have cost nearly $2 ($3.98 for 5 ounces), plus the gas to drive 50 miles round trip to the store to buy them!

Even though the harvest was small, Mr. H was impressed. I don't know why he ever doubted me in the first place, as most things I plant do grow successfully.

  1. Great Granny (as in quality not descendants). I had to chip ice from in front of the GH door in order to get some lettuce. What ever it takes it is worth it. You are probably thinking about packing up soon and heading north.

p.s. have you recovered form Sunday’s game?

  2. That's great, granny! Tell Mr. H that you would be able to get more lettuce, if your garden was bigger. Ha! Tell him you need trellises too....

  3. John, we'll head home around mid-March. That's two weeks earlier than usual, but I have a garden to grow!!!

EG, I think that little garden is just enough to keep me happy down here. Stuff just doesn't grow like it does at home! Besides, I've put the birdhouses on the back burner, so it's time to get going on those.

  4. Hey I can't wait till that's ME! We still have a bunch of snow covering my garden beds but I'm sure my sheet compost layers are busily decomposing. That bowl looks fantastic... :)

  5. Good for you! I had no doubt you would have your little garden. Since we're having 70's weather here I got one of my raised beds planted in radishes and lettuce (for us, since I have no darling bunny. It is supposed to cool down in the 50's and 60's so the little garden should do well. Especially since you put me on to Ed Hume seeds. I'm also ready to slap some spinach in another bed.

    miss you,

    Z

  6. Bethany! You're back! I thought you'd disappeared off the face of the earth when you didn't blog like forever. Now I can put you back in my favorite blogs...I see you've been busy, so I have some reading to do! I'm so happy to "see" you again! (Granny does a happy dance)

  7. Norma Zoey ;-) I'm glad to hear you're growing a garden. I can't hardly wait to get home so I can start a "real" one! Oh...it was only 22F at home today, so it might be a while. But I did plant radishes down here for us, Cookie can't have 'em. I miss you, too.

  8. That lettuce looks delicious. A whole lot better then the chemical laden romaine I had for dinner.

Maybe Mr.H doubted you so he could opt out of the work, hehehe?

  9. Dan, I'll bet it does taste good, but I'll never know...my pet rabbit will be getting it for his dinners this week! But just wait until I get my real garden growing. I'll have lettuce for ME, ME, ME! And maybe Mr. H if he says "Pretty please?"!!

  10. Your lettuce put a big old smile of my face. I'm super jealous. And I'm going to be super late for work if I don't get out of here...in minus 20 wind chill. Brrrrrr

  11. Cheryl, it doesn't take a lot to make an avid gardener happy! Who but us would get ecstatic over a tiny sprout....or a bowl of lettuce!

Wow, minus 20? It was 80/40 here yesterday!

  13. That's 2.5 ounces, Ribbit. Two point five.

    *wink*

And in the end, rabbit got it. But at least it was my pet rabbit, not the wild ones!

  14. Oooh lettuce! My nemesis! LOL, I don't know how you do it Granny, but we always end up on the same wavelength. Carolynp

  15. It is funny, Carolyn. In fact, after I titled and published this post, I started reading some of my favorite blogs and there was another post (it was about onions or some kind of seedlings) that said "We Have Liftoff". Honestly, I didn't read it before I titled mine!

    I don't think I did.

Heck, I am so forgetful, I may have read it and it just stuck somewhere in my old brain!

  16. Looks like you have some nice variety in there! Yum!

  17. Tessa, I know there is Buttercrunch and Red Sails, but the rest of it comes from a packet of mixed lettuce. Your guess is as good as mine ;-)

  18. Great work Granny! I knew you could do it. That salad looked amazing. And you have a month to harvest more! Way to go. Next year start right when you get there. Very cool!

  19. Sinfonian, I put the place up for sale the other day, and already have an interested party! Wish me luck, and I might be a full time Washingtonian soon.

  20. Nice lettuce ;) I have been picking lettuce for the past couple of weeks too...but I eat mine...no rabbits here (I don't like to share).

It's a shame how much it costs in the grocery store! I cringe every time I have to buy it.

By the way, your garden plans look very nice.

  21. howmygardengrows, it's just about time to cut some more lettuce, and I think maybe the rabbit will get left out this time! I did the work, I think I need at least one big salad from the little garden ;-)

Thank you for complementing the garden plan. I hope this year's garden looks as nice as the plan!
