November 9, 2009: Monday Harvest

*Each week Daphne's Dandelions hosts Monday Harvest. Be sure to visit her blog to see who is harvesting what this week!*

Unlike Thomas (A Growing Tradition), alas I have nothing but lettuce to show today. I thought about the picture later, and wondered why I didn't at least place a pansy in the center. Unfortunately by then the rabbit had already consumed a good portion, so I'll add the pansy to next week's plate of lettuce. Hey, at least it's not sitting on a soggy paper towel this week!

Speaking of Thomas, if you haven't yet visited his blog...RUN, don't walk! He cooks the most delicious looking "fancy" meals. I mean, he uses ingredients like shrimp paste and pea shoots and real garlic that you don't shake from a bottle! I'm such a "plain" cook, I envy him for his skill in preparing such lovely dishes. If my food needs to be seasoned, I grab the salt and pepper shakers!

  1. Thomas does make you drool all over the keyboard doesn't he? Your lettuce is very artfully arranged this week. I however still took photos of the carrots with dirt all over them. I should go for the pretty photos, but I don't. I go for ease of photo taking. I cut the tops off the carrots before I even go into the house. I don't wash them off until they get to the kitchen sink. So I get a choice of dirty carrots or carrots without tops.

  3. Daphne, dirty carrots just prove you grew them and didn't buy them! Nuthin' wrong with dirty veggies, LOL.

Erin, You'll just love Thomas. His veggie garden looks as good as his cooking, and you MUST look at his Autumn Fruit Pie....a most drool-worthy piece of art!

  4. Granny, don't go changing on us. We love you just the way you are. Although Thomas's pea shoots looked very good. I didn't even know people ate pea shoots! Now I can't wait to try them.

I envy your beautiful lettuce. I purchased some lettuce in the grocery store last week....let's just say it mostly went into the compost pile. I guess I can't eat lettuce again until next spring when I grow more :)

  5. I'm going to check out Thomas' blog. I also love to cook. Your salad looks great. I wish I started some crops back in late August so I can have some wonderful brassicas and leafy greens now. I'm so tempted to try to to plant something now but I know the first frost is coming soon. Our lows at night are already in the 40s in Atlanta.

  6. Gran - you are so funny. I love your lettuce! I'll give you some cooking lessons if you give me some gardening lessons this spring. I can only dream about producing the amount of food that you do.

Also, you have to give me some lessons on canning. I'm going out to by a canner in a couple of weeks and will surely have tons of questions for you!

  7. Rachel, my lettuce does look yummy, but I don't get to eat it. All that's being grown right now is for cookie, my rabbit. We get store bought!

Kalena Michele, I really wish I'd started broccoli and cabbage before I left WA. You'd think if they sold tomato plants down here, I'd be able to find brassicas!

Thomas, I'd love to be your canning/gardening guru!
