June 6, 2010: Nine Carrot Gold

OK, so they are more orange than gold, LOL. I have carrots of an edible size!

These were planted on March 30, and pulled this afternoon. From top to bottom, they are Ingot ( Nantes type), Chantenay Organic and Short 'n Sweet. There's not a lot of difference in size at this point, they all have about 4" of usable root. I was surprised the "short" ones are actually larger than the others. The Burpee packet says they are 4" at maturity, and these certainly aren't mature.

I've picked so much spinach this week, there's no way we could eat it all raw. There is too much lettuce to use up for salads, so the spinach had to be cooked. Believe it or not, this huge pot cooked down to just enough for Mr. Granny and I to have two meals from it. We'll be eating the leftovers tonight with our sweet little carrots and a grilled sirloin steak. I might have to go try to dig out a few more new potatoes to round off the meal. And for dessert? How about some of these....

It looks like just about enough to top a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream!

*YUM*

  1. Oh my, those raspberries look really good! I bet they would certainly be excellent on some ice cream.

  3. Yum! My raspberries won't be ready for awhile, so I really enjoy seeing yours! I can show Finn your pic so he knows - every day he asks if they are ready yet, and I say "no, they need to be more red"...!

  4. Hey Gran, how far apart do you space your carrots? I think I' might have planted mine too close. They are taking forever!

  5. EG, they are soooo good! I'm only getting a small amount every couple of days, but when the weather warms up, watch out! The canes are absolutely loaded with green berries.

Robin, I'm waiting for my broccoli and snap peas to go with my carrots and onions....then stir fry, here I come!

Erin, tell Finn that once he sees a little bit of color on the berries, it won't be much longer. It's so hard for the little ones to wait.

Roasted Garlicious, YUM is right! I can hardly wait until dinner.

Thomas, I spaced these at 2" in all directions. I have done them at 1", and that was fine, but I do think it took longer for them to bulk up. I did three rows down a strip of toilet tissue, offsetting the center row....first and last rows marked at even numbers (2", 4", 6", etc) and center row marked at odd numbers (1", 3", 5", etc.) That really seems to be the optimum spacing.

  6. The carrots, raspberries, and spinach all look wonderful! We just finished the last of the spring spinach this past week and I was able to blanche and freeze four pounds prior to the end of the spring season crop. We have a while to wait for both carrots and raspberries - but not that long.

  7. Kitsap, I do wish I'd planted enough spinach for freezing, but there just wasn't that much room. I'll do a fall planting, which will give me much more as it shouldn't have any waste due to leaf miners. I'll be happy when I get enough raspberries for more than one serving. I'm tired of having to share my half cup of berries with Mr. Granny ;-)

  8. Yummy berries! You'll surely have enough soon. I pulled almost the rest of our carrots today....I'm wondering if I should plant something else or just let it be for the time.

  9. Ribbit, well duh...plant something! Sheesh, you don't want bare earth, do you? You could plant some bush beans, or maybe another planting of carrots. Or, and this is something I like to do, dig a trench and do trench composting to make the soil better for next fall. Just dump in your scraps and cover with a bit of soil. Keep it up until the entire trench is filled. Problem with this is the dogs just love to dig the garbage back up. Of course, you can run the garbage through the blender first, then it decomposes faster and the dogs can't scatter it. It's a good thing.

  10. Those carrot tops are really big! My carrots took a long time to bulk up (although the were over-wintered), but the tops never got huge like yours...

I'm drooling over your raspberries, and over the thought of them with vanilla ice cream... Late night snack, anyone???

  11. Nice harvest, those berries are looking quite good!

  12. What a lovely harvest! I'm glad I came upon your garden blog and had a look around.

This year, we planted carrots for the first time in years. I'm excited to see how they come out, but I'm not sure how optimistic to be. We have had a lot of rain in Michigan and a fair amount of warm weather, so I'm expecting that our raspberries to be big and juicy. I can't wait!

  13. Momma_S, I really wanted some carrots with shorter tops this year, as the Imperator varieties I usually like to grow have such huge ones, they tend to flop over into the adjoining beds. Johnny's was the only catalog that actually gave the sizes of the tops, and I got home too late to order from them.

Mr. Granny got the whole day's picking of berries on his ice cream last night. My turn next.

Amy, beautiful but not yet bountiful!

Kelly, I'm just happy to have something besides salad from the garden ;-)

Welcome to my blog, 20minuteJan! Good luck on the carrots. Some of mine were a bit spotty in their germination this year. I don't know if it was the seed or the weather, but I suspect it was the seed.

  14. Serious raspberry envy here. I'm still waiting on mine.

  15. Cheryl, it seems like so few ripen at a time. I want to go out and pick an entire colander full, not just a handful. (Patience, Granny, patience)
