July 12, 2010: Monday Harvest

The week of July 5-11

The Walla Walla sweet onions that were pulled last week were dry enough to trim and weigh this week. They came in at 15 1/2 pounds. That makes more than 42 pounds of onions from two bunches of plants that cost a total of $2.78. Not a bad return on that investment, and there are still a few small onions left in the garden. We'll be eating them as fast as we can, as Walla Wallas are not good keepers.

It's still scorching hot here. I think it was 99F today, which was somewhat better than the 104F we had on Friday. I was cleaning out Cookie's cage this morning, when the dogs decided to "play" with him. They tend to get a bit rough, so play time has to be under close supervision. Neither Annie nor Otto will go near water, other then the bathtub. Sprinklers are scary things that make dogs melt, and so are raindrops, so imagine how surprised I was when Cookie took off across the lawn, through the sprinklers, with Annie and Otto right behind him! All three animals got a good soaking, which probably felt pretty good in this heat. Cookie looked more like a drowned rat than a rabbit! He finally hid from the dogs in the pile of raspberry canes I hadn't yet disposed of, I got the sprinklers turned off, and Mr. Granny rescued him and returned him to his cage.

He's not looking terribly thrilled about it, is he?

  1. Look at you Mrs. Fancy Pants with that harvest puzzle! Very neat.

That cookie is one smart cookie, but I do believe he's fuzzy eyeballing you from inside that cage.

  2. Nice looking onions! My son is thrilled with the prospects of your puzzle... going to let him try it now!

  3. That shower probably felt pretty nice despite the fact that he had to run from dogs to get it! The Walla Walla onion harvest is a beauty! Fun jig saw puzzle too. You are so clever. :D

  4. I loved the puzzle what a fun idea.
    Your harvest is fantastic.

I think Cookie was just trying to keep the dogs on their toes.

  5. What an adorably unhappy Cookie!!

You have done it again Granny, love that onion harvest- can't be beat it at a couple of dollars and some change.

  6. Hey there, your garden is full of adventures! The onions look fantastic. I only wish I could keep up daily -- after my classes, definitely!

  8. Ribbit, definitely giving me the FE!

Erin, my grandkids love to do the Jigzone puzzles. They have a new one each day, or you can chose from the gallery or make your own, and there are so many cuts to chose from, even the little ones can do the 6 piece puzzles. They love to put together puzzles of themselves!

Kitsap, I was tempted to follow them into the sprinklers myself ;-)

Thank you, Tosha. Now he's also a very clean bunny!

    ********
Jeana, they are such a funny trio to watch. Otto pokes cookie with his nose...poke, poke, POKE. Those pokes get really hard!

    ********
Kelly, it's almost instant gratification with those onions. can you imagine how big the harvest would have been if I hadn't pulled many of them for green onions, then salad onions?

Stefaneener, you have been MIA. It will be nice to have you back more often.

Cheryl, next year you'll have yours :-)

  9. Oh, I love your little Cookie bunny! Beautiful harvest!

  10. Love the onions! I have that problem with my Corgi and my bunny. She pokes the bunny trying to get him to play with her, or follows him around to make sure he doesn't chew on anything in the house. Sometimes he tells the doggy what-for!

Glad to hear your rabbit found some peace under the canes, hope he didn't get scratched by them!

  11. oh my goodness those onions look terrific! My Walla Wallas are about the size of quarters :(

  12. Thank you, Malissa.

Chelsea, isn't it funny how they poke? Otto poke hard. He pokes me if he's hungry, or if i have something he wants...or if he just wants a love. Cookie was unscathed by the raspberry canes, but they are nearly thornless. I don't even wear gloves when I work with them.

Allison, did you grow yours from seed, or buy them as plants? Mine were plants, about 6" long and quite husky, when I bought them. I did have quite a few smaller ones, the ones I planted closer together.

  13. That is a big basket of onions! I definitely need to give mine more fertilizer next year. We do have plenty though.

Nice puzzle! Just what I needed after a hard day working in the garden and kitchen. And no, I'm NOT going to say how long it took me. ;-)

  14. Villager, a reader, Johanna, gave me the idea for the puzzle when she said my picture looked like one. C'mon...how long did it take you? Try changing the cut to 108 piece swirls! That's my favorite.

  15. Aw, Cookie, I feel your cage annoyance. ;)

Creative idea with the puzzling harvest, Granny. I like how you change it up -- but I have to say, no matter how you arrange the pieces, you are a marvelous gardener. :)

  16. That's a lot of onions! What a great harvest! First thing that comes to mind is onion rings! Yummy.

  17. Thank you, Meredith. Cookie thanks you, too ;-)

Meemsnyc, onion rings are definitely on the menu this week!

  18. Hey, fancy schmancy on the new puzzle! I'm looking at your harvest, both for the week and total year to date, and you've really done well! You are an inspiration for me.

  20. I wish someone here would sell onion starts like that. Oh how it would make my life easier not to have to start up the lights in January. I could buy them online like that but the shipping costs are just exorbitant. Then again how would I eat 42 lbs of onions? Oh that would be hard. I love onions, but I think after a week of trying I'd run for the hills.

  21. You have it all, Granny; carrots, onions, potatoes, cabbage, rabbit. Now, get the pan on and make a stew!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Daphne, you just need a son like my youngest one. I never worry about a glut of most kinds of veggies with him around. The only thing he doesn't take home in quantity is lettuce. He only liked the Anuenue, and I wouldn't part with that. Speaking of, I just started 8 seeds of 6 varieties, and the Anuenue is the only one not to germinate at all. What a bummer, as it's such a good lettuce. But back to the onions...we've already eaten all but that 15-1/2 lb. basket and about 6-8 smaller ones in the veggie basket. They are so sweet, they go into a lot of salads and sandwiches as well as cooked dishes.

TIG, bite your tongue. Or fingers, in this case. That puny old rabbit wouldn't flavor a stew. Remove the fur from him, and all you have is a little bag of bones. He's quite a senior bunny, you know.

  23. The onion harvest is truly impressive! The only kind of water our two dogs like is the kind in a bowl that they can slurp. But I can imagine that they would brave the sprinklers to chase after a rabbit. Priorities, you know!

  24. Lovin those big onions! I tried your puzzle the other day, it took me 15:35. Me so smart :-)

  25. Thyme2garden, yes...Annie and Otto will drink the water, but that's about it. Although Annie does like her bath, and Otto tolerates his.

    ********
LOL, Dan. It took me 4:29. Me so smarter ;-)
