August 5, 2010: I'm Taking the Challenge!

Erin, at Garden Now - Think Later has thrown out the challenge......."How 'bout it, everyone? Let's see pics of your "stuffed away, don't know what I'm going to do with it, help me I hate this vegetable but can't bear to throw it out, pickled" fridge contents!"

OK, Erin, you asked for it!

Refrigerator pickles, pickled beets, sweet and dill relishes and jam on the top shelf, then it looks pretty good until we get down to the bottom shelf and the two crispers.

Here we have green beans, carrots, potatoes, onions, parsley, rosemary, beets, potatoes, green peppers, shallots, cabbage, way too many zucchinis, carrot tops for the rabbit and, if that's not enough, there's store bought head lettuce, carrots and kale for the rabbit, and celery. There's no way we can eat it all, so I'll give most of it to my kids.

  1. I knew it! I figured yours would be packed with greens! I cannot wait until it cools off a bit so my lettuces will grow again, I haven't had a salad yet this summer! So has your rabbit figured out how to open the fridge yet LOL?

  2. First time I have seen potatoes in a fridge. Do you store them that way long term?

I like all your stacked containers. I find that method conducive to keeping a neat fridge, though I still always managae to lose stuff in mine.

  3. LOL, Erin, and I forgot to add the cucumbers. I got smart and pickled the ones I picked today, but there are more hiding in there somewhere ;-)

  4. Kelly, I always keep my potatoes in the fridge in the summer. I don't know why, I've just always done it. It seems like they get too hot and soft if I keep them in the garage, and there isn't another place that's roomy and dark enough in the kitchen. The potatoes keep so crisp when I refrigerate them, but I know there's something about starches and sugars...they taste good to me, though.

  5. Well, this is a challenge I'm going to leave to you. No one sees me stepping over to the chicken coop.

Your refrigerator looks pretty good to me.

  6. LOL, Stefaneener, I'm glad I didn't see the challenge before I cleaned the fridge! It didn't look that good yesterday. Nobody better challenge me to show my kitchen floor before I get it mopped tomorrow ;-)

  7. Nice stockpile Granny. I'm too embarrassed to post a photo of my fridge. LOL.

  8. Wow! You and Erin are so organized! DH opened the fridge this morning and yelled to me upstairs, loud enough for the neighbors to hear, I'm sure, "I think something's dying twice in the fridge!" Ugh...

Heeey! I just read your comment about cleaning your fridge *before* the challenge... Should I clean mine then participate? I'll have to sleep on it then decide if it's worth finding what's smelly tomorrow, or waiting for DH to find it, LOL (So kidding. I'll make one of the boys do it. HAHA!).

  9. But it's all stacked and beautiful in there.

I'm SO not showing mine now.

  10. Oddly enough I really don't have a stuffed fridge - in fact, it tends to get rather bare at times because I don't keep much around by way of snacks or odds and ends - just basic cooking items and if I don't stay on top it, even that get's pretty scarce. Now my pantry, that is another story! It's packed with items.

At the moment the only surplus produce I have hanging around is a couple of zucchinis sitting on the kitchen counter. I have been taking them to people and giving away what we are not using. Sadly, the chickens have decided they do not like zucchini so it is not proving to be a good source of chicken feed like I had hoped.

  11. Meemsnyc, within the week, I'll be embarrassed to show mine, too. Erin's timing was just right, I can't often be caught with a neat refrigerator!

Momma_S, I only found one smelly thing while cleaning it. Mr. Granny had put a small sausage patty in a sandwich bag, and it had slipped behind the shelf and under the light. Oh, there was also the shriveled carrot. ;-)

Oh, Ribbit, you don't really think my fridge always looks that neat....silly girl. Maybe I should take a pic of the other side. Every time I open the door, the ice cream falls out.

I went out to the garden shed and borrowed all those plastic boxes. They are repurposed for the summer to hold the veggies. In the winter/spring, they are used to grow my seedlings.

Kitsap, doors were put on cupboards, pantries and refrigerators for a reason. They should only be opened, except by the owner, immediately after being cleaned. at all other times, they must remain closed. My refrigerator is only presentable once a month.

  12. Granny, look at all the 'fraidy cats!

  13. Your frig looks great, at least in comparison to mine. My problem is the kitchen counter, holding green peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers that need to have something done with them. I usually don't put them right in the frig because then they tend to get lost forever but they can't stay on the counter very long. Oh yeah, and one big ugly Armenian cucumber from my CSA that I don't know what the heck to do with. It's just sitting there as a conversation piece, as everyone who sees it says "what the *$(# is that?" Think I'll go home tonight and clean out the frig (and maybe then I'll take a picture).

  14. Forget it granny. Look what happened when I took the corn challenge. I decided to show my sunflowers instead.
Confirmation word - zatered. That sounds like someone who takes a challenge and fails.

  15. Erin, we don't need to raise no stinkin' chickens, we have enough of them right here ;-)

Linda, that's what I did. It's getting me in gear, too. I'm a canning, cooking fool today :-D

    ********
Johanna, I've always wanted a "Word Verification Day", where we all have to use our word in our comments. That could be some funny stuff.

  16. I'm positively scared to show our frig right now. I'm afraid the Kitchen Police would haul us away for good! I wouldn't mind showing the kitchen floor though, since I took the mop to it yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Villager, I'm just the opposite. I've been canning today, and I'm afraid I'll stick to the floor when I go in there to clean up!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm getting a visual of you stuck to the floor! I hope Mr. Granny is keeping an eye on you in case you are in need of removal!

  19. I'm loose now, Erin. Hmmm, does that mean I'm a loose woman?
