I got the jury summons just over a week ago, and my term was for two weeks. The first week passed, and I was not called to serve. I thought I was home free, but it was not to be. I called in last night to find I must report at 8:30 Monday morning, when they will select jurors for an upcoming murder trial. That means, if selected, my "two weeks" of service could extend for weeks! Please do not chose me, please do not chose me, please do not chose me......
Woe is me, but woe-er is my daughter. Amy was redoing her kitchen at the same time I was redoing mine. In fact, it was she who talked me into putting the laminate flooring in the kitchen. She just finished hers last week, and it turned out just beautiful. Her floors were much prettier than what I'd installed. Then it happened. Her garbage disposal plugged up, and she kept running water into it to flush it out. It seemed to be working, but what she didn't realize was that she was just pumping all that water into the dishwasher, as it had nowhere else to go. When she opened the dishwasher, the water poured out all over her newly (less than a week) installed flooring. It went behind the dishwasher, behind the cupboards, and everywhere. She threw towels down to try to sop up the mess, which may have even worsened the problem by keeping the flooring wet. Well, it soon began lifting and buckling. At first it ruined about a fourth of the flooring, then expanded to half. They keep pulling it up, and they are still finding dampness. Needless to say, she is just sick about it. She's the one who caught her kitchen on fire last year, now this! We have nicknamed her Fire & Water.
Sounds like a comedy routine but in actuality is not funny at all. Your poor daughter. Will insurance cover that?
ReplyDeleteMarcia, I'm sure it would, but the deductible is high enough she'd rather not have the claim on her insurance record. Her husband installed, so it's a matter of buying a few boxes of the flooring.
ReplyDeleteOh, so sad for your daughter! I would be so bummed. Hope there is no other stress in her life.

Lori, she has an almost 18 year old daughter and a 3 year old. 'Nuff said? LOL!
ReplyDeleteA trial would be interesting. I confess I wouldn't want a murder trial, but something shorter. It is kind of interesting to hear the real lawyers after watching so many lawyer shows. I suppose not nearly as entertaining if looked at one way, but I found a two day trial an interesting experience. But you never know maybe they won't like you and kick you off the jury.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing that your daughter's husband can fix the floor with minimal expense. How upsetting.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope that they find something wrong with you Granny and don't pick you for that trial! You could be tied up for a long time!
Daphne, I hate being on a jury. The last time, I was a holdout when everyone else voted on "guilty". I felt so sorry for the kid, I just wanted to believe the best. The other jurors were really cruel, and I finally caved. I was wrong, of course. His attorney spoke to us after the trial and admitted the kid was guilty. I did NOT find it to be a good experience.
ReplyDeleteRobin, what? Huh? I can't hear you. Sorry, dear, but my hearing is going and my memory is about five minutes long ;-)
ReplyDeleteooo, shiny object and sparkly lights. big whammy.
ReplyDeleteStay @ Home, huh? Color me clueless :-)
ReplyDeleteoh man. we got flooring from ikea for the back of our condo and front is made of pergo and the water tends more towards affecting the ikea flooring over the pergo. I guess u get what ya pay for too but the water backup...omg. that's a nightmare! i hope she catches a break soon.
ReplyDeleteThe trial sounds horribly stressful. I'm not fond of jury duty either and yet I've heard it's my "civic duty", etc. I would rather have you on a jury though than a lot of others if we have to try a suspected murder!
Oh no, I feel bad for you I really do. I have had jury duty 3 times. Hope you do not get stuck there too long.
ReplyDeleteDouble Bummer... Hope you don't get stuck too long and things over at the ark dry up!
ReplyDeleteOh the poor thing. Try not to laugh too much.
ReplyDeleteOh your poor daughter, I would have been in a heap in tears! And I hope they decide they don't want you for duty, ugh I dread that!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your daughter's flooring getting all messed up. That is just heartbreaking when something like that happens. I also read the old post on the fire and that was some scary stuff.
ReplyDeleteOh your poor daughter. What a shame!
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't get picked AG.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you don't get selected - murder trials can take a very long time to conclude and are usually rather hard to stomach through the necessary display of information.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the kitchen disaster.... that must have been very distressing for her.
That's incredible. I just did a blog about my husband being called up to Jury Duty for a three-month trial. Here's the link: http://hotlyspiced.com/2012/02/07/jury-duty-penance/
ReplyDeleteI do hope for your sake that you didn't get selected.
Hotly Spiced, that was hilarious...or not! I apologize for laughing, it was a real case of banging one's head against a brick wall. Having had to sit in the court room for two hours Monday morning, while waiting for those in authority to try to round up 60 no shows out of the 175 prospective jurors, I can also sympathize with the other side!
ReplyDeleteSo far I haven't been called back. Three more days of calling in and getting the "do not report" message, and I will be home free. Until the next time :-(
So were you selected? Your daughter deserves a break!
ReplyDeleteJody, the jury was seated today, without me! Hooray! Of course, I'm not home free until next week, as there could be other trials scheduled.
ReplyDeleteStunning quest there. What happened after? Good luck!
