January 8, 2013 - Guess Who Got.....

A new puppy!  An addition to Alicyn's family, not mine.  I'm happy being the one who gets to spoil her and then send her home.

First they got comfy with some soft cuddling.

Then, being such girly-girls, they went shopping.

Dezi Lu, pretty in her new pink sweater.

Then it was nighty-night time for a pooped out puppy.

Jake was not impressed with his new little sister.

    1. Thank you, Ray. I think they're both adorable (Jake, too)....of course I might be just a bit prejudiced. ;-)

    2. And how about another grandkid? Yours is so cute. I keep waiting for my first. But my son has to get married first. At least he has a girlfriend now. I suppose that is a start. And he wants to get a dog sometime. Maybe I can have grandkids and a granddog. I keep dreaming. Right now my son has pet rats. They are cute (except those tails) and very friendly.

    3. I think I've seen the end of the grandkids. Youngest daughter, mother of Alicyn and Alicia (born 14 years apart) says enough is enough. I think that's why she got the puppy. She IM'd me last night, all excited....one pee pee outside and one pee pee on the puppy pee pee pad. LOL, I still remember the stress of trying to potty train Annie and Otto, both at the same time.

    1. 1st. Man, Alicyn's Daddy has already latched onto the puppy, so it looks like they are going to be best pals. Alicyn's Mommy is wondering just how long it's going to take to house break her, LOL!

  4. Oh, I love the puppy and Jake!! Is the puppy a cocker too? Nancy

    1. Nancy, they couldn't find a cocker puppy, Dezi is a Cockerpoo. Turns out that mixed breed now costs more than the purebred cocker! I can remember when they used to give them away. There were three puppies to chose from, but the other two (who looked a bit more cocker than poodle) were males. They thought Jake would be more likely to take to a female, but he doesn't much care for her. He's been an only (spoiled) dog for too long.

    1. Nutmeg, they bought her from some people who live right up the street from us. They came by to introduce her, and I immediately fell in love. Who could resist? Besides, she gave me a soft little kiss.....I was a goner.

    1. Erin, they brought her over for a visit last night. Annie and Otto were a little bit curious, but not a bit offended by her presence. Otto may have had second thoughts when she kept attacking his wagging tail :-)

  7. Puppies are adorable, but I don't ever want another one! I don't have the patience for the barking, peeing, digging, and chewing everywhere and on everything. We always get rescue dogs and not puppies. All that being said, Dezi Lu is precious. I'd love to snuggle with her and then send her home.

    1. Alicyn is feeling the same as you. She was crying yesterday...."I just can't deal with this. Maybe when I'm 5 I can deal with a puppy".

I'm all for rescue dogs. I think almost every dog I've ever owned was a rescue dog. That being said, I bought both Annie and Otto from a family who were breeding them to raise money for their children's college educations. So....if one breeds dogs for the purpose of selling puppies, should the puppies be killed rather than be sold? That's always been a sore spot with me. If they cost $$, they should be left to die because they aren't rescue dogs. Or if they aren't sold, they go to the pound. THEN they can be called rescue dogs, even though they are the very same puppies that shouldn't be bought, and then it's OK to pay the money to the pound for them. Do you only own rescue chickens? Sheesh, Langela ;-)

    2. Quite a sticky web of insightful thinking, Gran.

    3. Yes, Cloud, and how much do you want to bet I'll get caught in the "sticky". LOL!

    4. Since you asked, Granny, all of my hens were rescued from a breeder. The conditions they were in were deplorable! They kept the poor babies in teensy tiny little cages shaped like eggs. Then the breeders would put them under a heater to speed up their growth. They're always in such a hurry to get them to the dinner table! The poor chicks grew so quickly that they outgrew their cages and were immediately put into a tiny box with 50 other chicks. I saw their plight and insisted they ship the entire box of babies to me right away. So there, Granny! Animals can be rescued FROM breeders! :)

    1. Cloud, Jake was the "perfect" puppy. Our neighbors in AZ decided to breed their cocker spaniels, but only one of the three puppies sold. They gave Jake to my daughter when he was maybe 3 months old. He was so perfectly behaved, they didn't realize how much trouble the new puppy could be. Chewing on everything at this age! I remember how it was. Otto ate a big chunk out of the molding around the bathroom window one night! He still likes to eat blankets.

    2. LOL. I am hoping Mr.Pickles AKA Kiki hasn't destroyed the apartment when I get back to Michigan. It would be very sad to have worked all these months just to pay for cat repairs. I miss that cat. :D

    3. I had a rescue dog that we adopted when we were first married. He used to chew up everything of mine that he found. Never touched a single item of my husband's! Once he even ate my leather boots and then threw them up for me to clean up. He ended up being the best dog! He went trucking with us when we drove over the road.

    4. I used to wonder what the odd blue fuzzy stuff was out in the back yard. I finally figured it was barfed up blanket from Otto.

Hey, what's with the squirrel pic??? Are trying to annoy me??? You know I hate those things!!!

    1. Hahaha, Robin, we only have nice squirrels around here. Actually, other than walnut trees sprouting up everywhere, they've never been a problem. Then, this past summer, they began eating my tomatoes. Odd that they had never bothered with them before.

Can you tell me what kind of grow lights you use to start your seed indoors and where you got them, please?

    1. Kelli, I just buy the cheapest 4' shop lights I can find, and use regular florescent bulbs in them. Home Depot, Lowe's, maybe even Walmart. I got my last ones at Fred Meyer, on sale, with a coupon. Just make sure they are the type of shop lights that have cords, not the hard wired ones.

    2. You're welcome, Kelli. I forgot to mention those were double lights, each unit holds two florescent bulbs. The fixtures can usually be found for around $10-15 if you watch the sales. The bulbs have to be purchased separately.
