March 11, 2013 - The Thatched Roof

(Second post today, see the first one here)

Before John left, after finishing the fencing, Mr. Granny talked him into cleaning the pine boughs off of our roof.  It really looked like we had a thatched roof after that big windstorm!  I was going to climb up there and do it myself, but Mr. Granny said "Absolutely not!" and refused to hold the ladder for me.  I'm kind of glad, as I wasn't looking forward to walking all over that roof!

The pine trees are messy, but we've never had a mess quite this bad.  Of course, the next door neighbor lost three big pine trees, so this is minimal compared to the damage she had.

This was all from the south side (front) of the house.

The back side (north) was almost as bad.  The shingles are stained from the wet pine needles.  Hopefully a good rainstorm will take care of that.

Lots of cleanup to do, so I hope we have good weather tomorrow.  I'm too tired to tackle it tonight.  And I have to go wash the dog poo off of my shoes.  If there's one pile in the yard, you can be sure I'll step in it.  :-(

  2. I seem to have trouble with the duck do. The dogs go in one area so we can pick it up easy enough, but the ducks...well they meander and just do it wherever. Grr!

    1. Jacqui, we have a lovely walking path down by the river, but there is so much goose poo on it I won't take the dogs down there. It's rather funny watching people trying to avoid stepping in it, they almost look like they are dancing, LOL!

  3. My goodness Granny! There's been a lot going on around your place the last few days! Looking good! I bet you slept like a baby last night :)

It looks like your blogging block is over!

    1. Oh, Robin, just the opposite. I was still awake at 5 this morning, and finally fell asleep for about 2 1/2 hours. My mind was so busy thinking about getting the mess cleaned up and getting the potato beds dug and planted, I just couldn't relax. It didn't help that my body ached all over, even after Tylenol and a hot bath!

    1. Sarada, I might just give in and hire someone to do the cleanup. It's really a mess out there, worse than the pictures show!

    3. Sarada, I didn't ave to hire someone. I called my youngest son and said "You owe me"! The two of us got it cleaned up and bagged in about two hours! Whew! Now I can rest easy!

  5. We occasionally get pine tree branches on the roof too. But never quite that bad. I love the needles for my blueberries.

    1. Daphne, we get a lot of mess from the trees, but it has never been this bad before. We've had stronger windstorms too, and not had so many branches come down. It makes me wonder just how healthy those old trees are, or if there's some type of borer that could be weakening the branches. The neighbor just had the one tree actually blow down, but the insurance company insisted on taking down the other two, as they were afraid another storm would drop them onto a neighboring house. They are still chopping all that wood, and trying to figure out what to do with it. She really needs to get it off the lawn, or her grass will be dead.

  6. Hehe, I saved my husband the embarrassment of cat poo shoes by doing a little scooping up before he mowed the lawn this weekend. It was like a mine field out there!

    1. Anywhere, you should have two dogs. I didn't get out to clean it up very often this winter, but it was still unbelievable the amount they drop! We put some gravel in the pathway down the side of the house, and Otto has been going there. I wish they both would, as it's easy to spot and to scoop up. It just hides in the grass.

  8. That's a lot of mess. It's devastating how a windstorm can damage our house and backyard. Good to hear that aside from the clutter, nothing worst happened to your home. Also, thankfully, Mr. Granny didn't let you climb off the roof and resolved the problem himself. Climbing up the roof can be quite dangerous, especially without safety gear on. --Tamara @ RhinoRoofingABQ.com
