December 23, 2009: Oh, What a Mess

Hmmm.....I'm usually a rather neat person.

So how did my seed box get into such a mess?

It took the better part of an afternoon,

But now I can get the lid on again!

And begin my seed inventory for the 2010 garden.

  1. That's very inspiring!! I just did the same thing with my closet - now I have two big bags full for Goodwill and more elbow room in there. I confess hat my seed box is a big mess, but now I see(d) the light! Have a happy day - Bonnie

  2. Go Granny! By nature I'm a really messy person. Most people don't guess that, but I've lived with so many neat freaks and those with OCD that I've learned the benefit of order. But one look at my desk (my bastion of chaos) and you would know.

  3. Bonnie Story, HAH! I'm glad I made you see(d) the light! When I feel things are getting a bit messy (like the seed box), I watch an episode or two of Hoarders on A&E and it never fails to get me into the mood to clean up and clear out!

Daphne, I cannot believe you are a messy person. Just keep that desk hidden and let me have my fantasies of Daphne the neat freak!

  4. A task I still need to get to and the seed list too! I like your spread sheet, I think I am going to do a spread sheet this year. Last year I did an html one for the blog, the problem with it was if I add something I have to manually move everything below it.

  5. I also have some seeds all over the place in it's shoebox. lol I keep all my seeds in the fridge. I just saw Daphne's seed chart. Yours looks great also. Something I can whip up in excel. Have a wonderful Christmas!!

  7. Dan, I did one last year that really came in handy. I have a lot of seeds left from the 2009 garden, no sense in buying what I already have. Those little packets in the photo are yours, just waiting to see if you want more. I need to send you a list of my flower seeds.

Kalena Michelle, as I was telling Dan, the sheet is really handy...if I ever get this one finished, LOL!

Kitsap, glad I could inspire you!

  8. This is something I definitely need to do. I haven't decided how to best organize my list yet. What are some of the things you note on your list?

  9. Thomas, if you click on the photo, it makes it full sized to read the headers. Last year I put more information on the list, but found I didn't keep it up through the year. Stuff like germination date, harvest date and comments. I just depend on my blog entries for most info.

  10. Hi Annie,

Now that the Christmas decor is stowed, gardening prep can begin in earnest! (Woo-hoo!) So I'm going to take a cue from you, organize my seed box, do up an Excel chart (why didn't I think of that?) and decide what I need to order. Just the job for Boxing Day!

    Go go gardening grannies!

  11. Hi, Deb! Yes, I need to get busy and finish my chart, now that Christmas has passed. Enough of this winter nonsense, I'm ready to plant!

  12. I love your little filing system, and the fact that you've got an actual computerized database! I'm going to have to do that for the next sowing season!

  13. USMC Sis, it's probably not the best way to store seeds, but it's really handy for me. As I travel from north to south, I just grab the seed box and it goes with me. It usually doesn't get that messy, though!

The database is really handy for me, as I can see at a glance what I have, what I need to replace and what seed is so old I may as well dispose of them.

  14. Nice Chart. I am adopting it with a few changes. This past fall I started my first "real" garden. I had a few issues, so I made a column for "problems" and "solutions" so I can remember how I treated it. I am learning so much. I also added a "date planted" and hopefully I can track what does better in the spring garden and what does better in the fall garden. Thanks for sharing you spreadsheet. It is a great one. 15. Emily, my 2009 chart had much more information entered, but I found I didn't keep it up very well. It was easier to just look back at my blog notes. The headers on that chart were:

    Variety/Acquired From/Cost/Days to Maturity/Date Planted/Date Germinated/Expected Harvest Date/Actual Harvest Date/Comments

I would also add the seed age (year acquired) to that.
