January 31, 2011 - Leona the Meyer Lemon

Thomas was asking how his readers' citrus trees were doing, and I realized it has been quite a long time since I updated Leona the Meyer Lemon's progress. For those of you who are new to my blog, Leona is a Dwarf Improved Meyer Lemon tree. We named it Leona after my husband's mother, Leona Meyer. I purchased Leona as a 4" tall nursery plant last May. She is now 26" tall, and has had one of her branches pruned to force it to branch out like the other two did on their own. Leona has two clusters, plus one single blossom. This is her second time to bloom, but she has never set any fruit. I've been putting her outside most days, hoping a bee would find her, and I've given her blossoms a bit of tickling with a Q-tip. It's just a wait-and-see game now.

You can check out Leona's progress at See How She Grows

  1. Wow! Leona is looking quite healthy and happy!! Great job overwintering her! I see flowers! Pretty! Maybe you need some of my flower seeds to help with the bees so we can be sure you'll have fruits on that Little Leona!!

  2. Leona looks nice! I should name mine, lol. Ours is tall but no blossoms as of yet.

  3. Holly, I actually saw a bee the other day! I was hoping he'd find Leona, but Mr. Granny came in that afternoon and said he'd killed a bee. I yelled at him... "You didn't!". He said he didn't do it on purpose, but it went swimming in his bourbon and coke and when he fished it out, it staggered around then died. I told him he'd better give up that afternoon cocktail, before it does to him what it did to that bee ;-)

  4. Leona is looking great! Hope you keep the bees away from Mr. Granny during happy hour, or you'll never get any fruit!

  5. Oh she is lovely! I would really like to get a Leona!

  6. I guess Mr. Granny's drinks are a little too much for the bees. LOL! I'm hosting a project next sunday called Save the Bees in case you're interested in playing along or if you want to be one of the first posts to my giveaway so I can send you some Bee's Friend seeds. Seems rather fitting for Leona!

  7. Leona is really looking great! I can't believe that she has grown almost 2' in less then a year.

Hopefully with that Q-tip loving she will set fruit for you this time!

  8. You and Thomas really make me want to have a lemon tree. The only good spot for it is in front of the southeast sliding glass door. But it is also bad. That is where the heat and air conditioning come out from the floor. I think the air would desiccate the poor thing. Maybe some day I'll try anyway.

  9. Wow, Leona has come a long way Gran! She looks so happy and content. I'm crossing my fingers that you get lemons this year. I like the way you've trained her. I tried to do the same with mine but the cutting that I got in the mail was just off. It's not one I would have chosen myself but Charlie has turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

  10. She is growing nicely! Typically, how many yaars before the trees start producing their first harvests?

  11. Good Morning!

Leona is looking fabulous! You have done an excellent job and she is a beauty.

I have now read all the way back to 2008... So many stories; some scary, like Otto almost choking on the stick; some so sweet, like Kevin's first pumpkin pie... I am enjoying all the recipes and am taking notes like crazy!

I don't know how to make pies but I must say your pies are soooooo pretty! I can't wait to try and make your pumpkin pie.

  12. Your little traveling lemon tree is looking wonderful. Hope you get some lemons soon.

  13. I'm going to gloat a bit here and tell you that my neighbor is a beekeeper. But, I don't have a Meyer Lemon tree. Maybe that evens things out.

  14. Leona is blossoming into a lovely young tree! :)

  15. Thanks to all for the comments. I'm having internet woes. Again. My daughter is doing a good job publishing your comments, and she reads them all to me over the phone! Just know I appreciate each and every one of them, even though I can't always answer them individually (^#%@^*#$ internet connection!)

  23. Hey there this is kinda of off topic but I was wondering
if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with
HTML. I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!
