April 13, 2011 - I Did It!

I made a goose egg omelet for breakfast! I know some of you are probably laughing at me, but I was tentative about tasting it, having never eaten a goose egg before. I'm happy to report that it was delicious, and I'll be eating the next one "naked".....the egg that is, not me. In other words, the flavor will not be masked by onions, peppers, bacon and cheese.

A third of the one egg omelet was almost more than I could eat, but my youngest son came over to share it with me. Mr. Granny wouldn't touch it, because I put sweet peppers in it!

  2. Oh boy: you are brave! I had a friend that would bring me duck eggs and I was only able to bake with them...I wasn't able to eat one: naked! I think I might be able to do it now...I'm a bit braver when it comes to my food, now.

  3. Mr. Granny is a bit fussy, isn't he? Looks yummy, it's making me hungry. Such a bright yellow color. Good thing youngest son didn't take after his dad.

  4. LOL, Erin, especially all the butter and bacon that I put in the omelet, huh?

Lynda, I have to admit I took extra time making my toast, so that my son had already taken a few bites before I tried it!

Alison, yes he is! And our son will eat anything and everything in sight ;-)

  5. Yes I'm laughing just a little bit Granny. But I'm glad you are trying it au natural next time, but I really be that it tasted like . . . egg. Am I right?

  6. That's great news. I was curious if an egg would taste less like an egg because it wasn't from a chicken. Glad to see an egg is an egg, you just need a half dozen bantum eggs to equal one duck egg. Good to know!

  7. I'm sure it tasted good, but I'd rather bake a cake with it, I understand that they are very rich.

  8. Sinfonian, yes, it took 6 bantam eggs to equal the weight of that one goose (not duck) egg. And an egg is an egg is an egg, as far as I can taste!

  9. Ginny, I still have one more. It won't go into a cake though, as I still have half a birthday cake in the freezer.

  10. Boy that omelet looks good! I am happy to hear that it's the egg that will be naked :)

  11. Robin, if it were me, and not the egg, you'd have to bleach your eyes to get rid of the nasty vision!

  12. Seems like Mr. Granny needs to go back in the chicken house where my dream put him last year.

  13. Ribbit, sometimes I'd like to tell him where to go, and it wouldn't be to the chicken house ;-)

  15. LOL! Sneaky that you let your son try it first!!!!
And phooey on fussy eaters...I've got one of those too, and can't even begin to tell you how many times I wanted to tell him where to go, too...
Now that I know goose eggs taste just like...eggs...LOL...I may try some one day. A dozen of those suckers would just about fill my fridge, though!

  16. Roasted, three years ago I didn't like peppers. Then I started my own from seed, and they grew large and red and sweet, and I was hooked! Now I love them raw or cooked, fresh or frozen.

SB, my grandson says he wants to eat the other goose egg, so I told him to come on over! There is no way I could eat a whole one, but I sure do love those little banty eggs.

  17. Now that is a big egg. Looks yummy too. I will have to get one from my friend and give it a try.

  18. Lorie, it wouldn't be bad to have a couple of them around for baking. They're just too big for breakfast!

  19. I was that way when we first got chickens! It was all in my mind, of course, and I finally got over it. I didn't even realize it until I had a store-bought egg at my in-law's one Christmas and told my husband it had no taste. He laughed as I finally realized I had been converted.

  20. So goose egg taste just like chicken egg? Go figure! I would have gladly eaten Mr. G's share, if I were around, that omelet looks yummy :-)

  21. Thyme, not EXACTLY like chicken egg, but close. Hard to explain, but maybe chicken egg with heavy cream added to it. Richer, fattier flavored, but still similar. Not like something completely alien ;-)

  22. LOL, Langela, Mr. Granny still says he can't tell the difference between store bought and free range, but I can. Not only in the flavor, and the rich colored yolks, but in the hard egg shells.

  23. Funny how apprehensive we can be about trying new food, I probably would have done a similar thing.

  24. Kelly, I'm not the bravest person when it comes to trying something new! Grandson spent the night and will be eating the second goose egg this morning.
