June 13, 2011 - I Can't Garden 24 Hours a Day, Ya Know!

You can't expect a girl to garden all the time! Sometimes I need a "little project". You probably know how "little projects" just beg for more and more, and soon they become "big projects". That's just how it goes.

The Project involves making a big mess on the patio.

The Project involves lots of coats of primer and paint. Not just those two boards, but all the railings and trim that you see in the picture.....and lots more. That's just what got done today, both inside and outside railing.

The Project involves some scrap sheets of OSB, which also require several coats of primer and paint.

Stay tuned for further developments on The Project.

In the garden, all it took was a windstorm to do this:

I pulled them back upright last night, and strung some garden twine across the front, but this morning they were down again.

It's going to make finding and picking these a bit more difficult.

  1. Oh the poor peas!

  2. When we had that storm that gave us "storm", our peas were hit hard. Most years we get as much as 5 pounds. This year we only got 2. I hope they're not to stressed to produce a big harvest for you.

  3. Jody, my son will be here tomorrow, so I'll have him help me tie them back up. I might have to bring out some wire fencing to hold them, the twine sure isn't doing it.

  4. What is up with all this wind? I don't know if this is normal for you this time of year but it is not for us. It feels like we are about a month behind in our weather.

  5. The wind is pretty normal. Those peas were only supposed to get 36" high, so that's how high I made the support. I thought they had really attached themselves to the top twine, but evidently not!

The garden is mostly way behind. last year's Monday Harvest was

    6 oz. strawberries
    18 oz. raspberries
    12 oz. spinach
    2 oz. shallots
    2-1/2 oz. sugar snap peas
    122 oz. lettuce
    43 oz. onions
    24 oz. carrots
    sprig of dill

I'm not even close on the berries and carrots, but I always get lettuce!

  7. I have ideas on what the "big project" is and so now I am interested in seeing if I am right or not. Sorry the wind did some trouble. We had some wind yesterday too but our place is surrounded by tall trees which acts as a great windblock for us (blocks sun too unfortunately!).

  8. I think your just a glutton for punishment! As if there isn't enough with the garden season upon us and you have to go throw a painting project into the picture. I'm not painting my wrought iron chairs this year and that's that! I wish you would sit down.

  9. Don't you just love all those would be little projects. I have come to the conclusion there is no such thing as a little project.

  10. Erin, just wait! Just wait! All I can say is it is not garden related, except in a very roundabout way.

Kitsap, you'll never guess ;-) Or maybe you will ;-) ;-)

Ginny, my old body sure felt all that painting last night! Today I get to start the building, but there's still a lot of painting to do. I love projects, they challenge my body and brain!

Wilderness, you've got that right. I could have done this project with a screwdriver and a stapler, but I would never be happy with the results.

  11. You've peaked my curiosity. Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve, Gran!

That happened to my peas last year too. The plants didn't seem to mind but it was like search through rat's nest for peas.

  12. Why can't you garden 24/7 - I do? Of course, I take lots of meds, too.....heh.

  13. I'm working hard on it Thomas! I always have to sit and wait for paint to dry before I can hammer, but it's coming right along ;-)

EG, in a way I really do. If I'm not outside gardening, I'm doing it in my sleep, LOL!

  14. I bet you're building a dwarf-dungeon.

You see, I can spot these things!

  15. You guessed it, IG! See today's blog.

  16. I have been there with the peas...stringing the twine across the top on both sides helped mine some. I hope you are able to still have a good pea harvest.

  17. Kris, The peas grew taller than they were supposed to. Their support is only 3' high, and should have been around 5'. If I grow this variety again, I'll know to extend the trellis!
