June 26, 2011 - Dear Santa......

Dear Santa,

I promise to be a very good girl this year, if only you will bring me one of these for Christmas.

Love,
Granny

My oldest son, John, came over this morning to begin the sawing of the rafters. He brought this power washer with him, and between us we washed the house siding, the patio floor, the outdoor furniture and the patio (fiberglass) roof. Then we washed the house siding, the patio floor, and the outdoor furniture. No, that wasn't a typo. He power washed the roof after all the other stuff was done, so we got it all dirty and had to wash everything a second time! I absolutely love that power washer. I wish I could take it inside and clean my entire house, just like we did the outside!

Otto must be wondering how the patio got so clean! Some day I'll be all finished with the work out there, and then I can finally put the ladder away. Today I managed to get all that siding painted, and I'm nearly finished with the patio trim.

Here you can see what John's doing. Three down and only 36 to go! When he gets all of them cut, he'll be able to install a fascia board. I haven't yet decided if I'll have him put up soffits or leave the rafters exposed like they are on the rest of the house.

  1. Power washers are a marvelous invention! Your patio looks so white now, you must need shades when you're out there. What a good son you have there.

  2. It's so nice to have a handy and helpful son! I hope mine grow up to be both handy and helpful (and remember dear old Mom and Dad)...

  3. Alison, with an off-white translucent fiberglass roof, the pine needles and gunk from winter make it quite dim. It's much brighter now!

Nartaya, he's very helpful. I see new bathroom faucets in my future ;-) I'll let him finish this job before I hit him up for the next one. BTW, I fed him well for today's work...grilled steak, baked potatoes and fresh garden salad.

  4. Heck , for a meal like that I'd help too!!
Hope Santa gets you that power washer. I love the "practical" gifts too. I knew I had a keeper when Don got me a chainsaw our first Christmas together.

  5. Another friend of mine posted just the same thing about wanting to take her pressure washer inside! They are magnificent, aren't they.

  6. I don't know Granny, one job always goes into two, then three...and then more! In a house there's no end.

  7. I would love to have one too! Our pale gray siding turns bright yellow from pollen every year and we have to rent one!

  8. Sue, my favorite gift from Mr. Granny was my power miter saw.

Ribbit, I think all houses and furnishings should be power washer ready! I even power washed the upholstery on our Granny and Grandpa patio chairs, LOL!

Ginny, tell me about it. I'm a real do-it-yourselfer, I always have to have some type of project going.

Erin, our neighbor's sycamore trees throw seed balls at our house, so it looks like it has grease spots all over. We get a lot of spider webs in the summer, too.

  9. My MIL has a power washer for her dock on her vacation home. Oh my gosh I hate that thing. It is so noisy. But they do get things clean.

  10. Daphne, that baby did such a good job, the noise didn't even bother me. It wasn't as loud as the lawnmower, or maybe I was just having so much fun I didn't notice!

  11. Before a week ago I would not have understood all the work that goes into maintaining the outside of your house. We recently finished scraping, sanding, cleaning, and priming the deck on our new house (a requirement before we close on it... we could either do it secretly ourselves or delay closing even longer by waiting to have someone else fix it). That project took 10,000 times longer than we thought it would, and we haven't even painted yet!

Here's to hoping that someday, all of your projects will be finished!

  12. LOL, Prairie Cat, after 50 years of home ownership, not a year goes by that something doesn't need to be painted, repaired or replaced! We've been in this house for 22 years, and it seems like 10 years is the point when it all begins. The 20th year is when it all has to be done again. I don't expect I'll ever get caught up to the point that I'm satisfied with everything.
