July 23, 2011 - Surprise!

Tonight I was up late, trying to get everything caught up. I had made one batch of raspberry jam, and was ready to start another, but couldn't find more half-pint jars. The last place to look for them was in the cupboard over the refrigerator, so I dragged out the step stool, climbed up and opened the cupboard. There was a brand new box of half pint jars! But that's not what surprised me. My kids have been asking for more home canned salsa, but I was completely out. Or so I thought. I had completely forgotten about the dozen pints I had stored in that cupboard over the refrigerator! Not only were there jars of salsa, there were several jars of pickles and relishes, too. I thought we had used them all up!

Surprise! Sweet relish, dill relish, bread & butter pickles and pineapple salsa!

  1. I never use that cupboard because that's exactly what happens. I forget about things up there because you really don't "notice" that cabinet.
Glad you found more treats! You can use that salsa to con the kids into work!
    :D

  3. lol I don't put cans anywhere but my pantry so I don't lose them. So of course I put some bottles in the basement and forgot about them.

  4. Sue, so true! I vaguely remembered putting the jars up there, but that's where I normally keep things like the fancy butter dish and serving pieces that might be used once or twice a year! Hmmmm, I wonder where those items are? LOL!

Rmgales, now I don't feel so bad about not getting many tomatoes this year, I'm already a dozen pints ahead in the salsa department!

Daphne, remember when I said I put jars of pickles under the bed? I was sure there was another plastic thing of both pickles and relish, but it wasn't under the bed where I thought it was. I just figured I'd given it all away. I sure miss my big basement with its entire room of shelves :-( I sure don't have to make any relish this year!

  5. I use that cabinet in my house for storing some of my empty canning jars - but rarely have I used it for actual canned goods because it is just too hard for me to reach for frequent access. Those jars of produce look really good - what a nice surprise!

  8. What a wonderful surprise! Its always nice to find good things where you least expect them. However, like you said then you have to try and remember where you put the stuff that was suppose to be there..lol

  9. DMarie, maybe I should look in the backs of all the other cupboards. Who knows where I stashed stuff last fall, LOL!

  10. What a great surprise! Whose sweet relish recipe do you use? I have 9lbs or so of cukes I need to preserve.

  11. David, I use the same recipe for sweet relish (with cucumbers) as for the zucchini relish on my blog here:

I love it on hot dogs and burgers, and it's equally good made with cukes or zukes!

  12. Sounds like you need a spreadsheet to remind you where you stashed all your stuff.

  13. A surprise like that is like money in the bank :o)...When we run out of something ..Cecil goes to the freezer or the "food Cabinet" and says, the guy at the store gave it to me ( just a joke between us that he didn't go to the store for it :o)

Ginny, the older we get, the more people it takes to remember something for us.

  16. Robin, it was a brand new box, still sealed, that I found in that cupboard. I know I must have more somewhere, so that means a trip to the garage to see what's in those cupboards! I'm working on making Mr. Granny move some of his junk out of the garage cupboards, which were originally mine for jars and paint. Somehow he took over out there! I know where all my pint and quart jars are, it's just the half-pints I've lost. Of course, now that I found all that pickle relish, I probably won't need any more half pints.

  17. Made the relish last night - Used Ballls's recipe - basically it's the same thing. Your's looks quite green inthe pictures, you didn't did you?

  18. David, I added a bit of green food coloring to some of mine. I actually have light green (naked relish), bright green (too much food coloring), and something in between (just right food coloring). I also have polka dot (used all red bell peppers)! That's how I do things....my salsa comes in three varieties, hot, too hot and grab the fire extinguisher!
