September 9, 2012 - Here a Squash, There a Squash, Everywhere a Squash-squash!

I've picked 30 butternut squashes so far.  We've eaten two, I've given away two, and must find room to store all of these (and several more that are still to be harvested) for the winter.  The smallest weighed 1-1/2 pounds, the largest weighed 6 pounds.  All together, so far, 111 pounds have been harvested.

As I was setting these up on the patio table to photograph, one squash tipped over and, just like dominoes, they all went over!  Luckily only one went off the table, and it landed in a chair.

  1. Wow Granny!! You should have painted faces on them!!! I say stick them under the bed. I store my winter squash under the bed on the third floor.

    1. They have just been moved out to the garage. It's supposed to cool down into the 70s by the end of the week, so the garage should be fine if it doesn't get too cold this winter. I've always left them in the house before, but with us in AZ the temp was set to 40 degrees. I know it would be too warm in here this winter. I'll keep my eye on them and start cooking and freezing if they begin to go bad. Oh, they can't go under the bed, my old oak dining table is stored under it!

  2. My husband saw my squash lined up by the back door and wanted to go buy some googly eyes to put on them. You way outdid me on the squash. I picked twelve yesterday. I've probably got six more to go.

    1. Daphne, I always think of Shmoos, the little creatures from the Li'l Abner comic strip. I have at least five more large nearly ripe ones, plus several "iffy" ones and a lot of babies that I know won't make it. I cut back some of the vines this morning, and accidentally got a few green ones with them. I think I harvested 21 of them in 2010, and none went to waste. Now, if Mr. G. would just eat pumpkin/butternut pie....LOL!!!

  4. I wished you had a video of the domino event! In my mind I see you scrambling to try to keep it from happening until you realize it's no use and give up. You do some funny things in my imagination, Granny!

    1. Langela, I think I just threw my arms out in a futile attempt to keep as many on the table as possible. I was lucky some didn't smash onto the concrete and break. I think there might have been 3-4 standing in the end!

  5. I was going to suggest putting faces on them, but Robin beat me to it. They do look like a big group having a party, don't they? I think I would have a party if I had that many yummy butternut squash.

  6. Oh me oh my, so many butternuts! Enjoy, enjoy. We didn't get anywhere near that many, but then you are the harvest queen.

(Have you peanut-buttered a dog yet?)

    1. Not yet, Stefaneener. I was too busy to be bored today, with a big harvest and a ton of beans to prep freeze. Their day is coming, though....and I will have camera in hand! :-)

  7. GOod year for butternuts!
Did you have any split? I've had several doing that this year.
I've been handing them out to just about anyone that shows up at the house.
And like Robin said-I even use them to decorate for Halloween by painting them up.....Hey, there's an idea--paint one up to look like Mr. Granny. Hahahhaah!

    1. Sue, I've never ever had a squash split. I wonder what on earth would make them do that. Hey, those short, chunky butternuts do look a bit like Mr. Granny ;-)

  8. OOOooohhh.... my.... yummm... So intelligent, I know. I just can't help myself. Entirely too wet here this year for squash. Not a single plant made it this year in my garden. I'm still pouting even though I just set out another 6 butternut plants. I'm pryaing to make it to harvest just a few. One even... *sigh* Not that I can't buy them, but sheesh. I've never failed to harvest at least SOME winter squash! Yours are lovely, and so plentiful!

    1. Barbie, the butternuts are favorites of ours. It's too bad they take up so much garden space! I tried the bush butternut last year, but they aren't prolific enough to suit me.

    1. Thanks, Nutmeg. I'm looking forward to having fresh butternuts squash for dinner at least once a week until they're all gone. A pumpkin pie or two might be on the menu, too. Even though Mr. Granny says butternuts are not pumpkins!
