May 26, 2009: The New Garden Shed (Part 1)

Our son, John, came over yesterday morning with a load of lumber and supplies, and began construction of the new garden shed. He's not a builder by profession, and he didn't have any blueprints, I just told him what I wanted and he began building. He's smart like that! As usual, click on the photos to enlarge.

He spent yesterday constructing the trusses.

The concrete pad had been extended from 8'x10' to the new 12'x14', and had cured for a few days. John, our other son Scott, and Scott's friend Richard did the concrete work.

John begins building the west wall. It won't be long before the neighbor's horrid fence will once again be hidden from view!

The east wall goes up.

Scott shows up in time to help with the south wall. He's not a builder. I wouldn't even trust him with a hammer! He does, however, make a pretty good gofer and has the muscle to help raise those walls.

Four walls are up, and they put up the trusses.

Now THAT was a good day's work!

  2. Oh, how I feel like Scott after this weekend. The entire weekend was spent working at the folks place or the inlaws renovating or building something. I'm a banker by trade but can do a pretty good job if you tell me exactly what to do then show me how to do it.

That shed looks great! And it went up so fast. Well done. I hope you kept the pizza and beer going for your boys!

  3. KitsapFG, so much better than that old metal shed. No more hitting my head on the ceiling in this one!

Sifonian, I kept the hamburgers and pop going...no beer, I wanted the walls of this shed to be level and plumb! I'll break out the booze when the job is finished ;-)

  6. Looking good Granny! I'm not a builder either, I just play one in my backyard, I have a black thumb nail to prove it too :-) Good thinking holding back the booze until the job is done.

  11. Toni, Mr. H has already been told...he's not to use my shed. The lawn equipment is allowed in there, but every other inch of that shed is mine, mine, MINE!!! Don't feel bad for him though, he has a very big garage for his messes!

Sue & Judy, it only takes four words to explain why he's doing all this work for me.

    He owes me money.

    ;-)

  12. What wonderful boys. How nice to have it up, and seemingly so fast.

Enjoy your new space while it's new feeling still.

  13. Granny - I'm so envious of the shed, and your sons building it for you. I'm about to start my own shed this weekend, and of course will have to do the entire thing by myself. I'm sure yours will look fantastic when completed.

  15. Stefaneener, I can't hardly wait to get in there and begin arranging things!

EG, now don't you go and build yourself one that's prettier than mine, or I'll have to paint flowers on the sides or something! Glad to see you back, I missed ya!

Amy, thanks. I hope it looks nice when we finish!

John, me too. I had everything planned in advance, but John keeps adding windows and fans and stuff where I was going to hang tools, so I'll just wait until he's done and go back to the old drawing board.

  16. "I just told him what I wanted and he began building."

If only it worked that way around here. You are truly a lucky lady.

  17. Cheryl, let me rephrase that just a bit:

"I just told him what I wanted, handed him my Lowe's credit card, and then he began building."

    ;-)

  18. I can't wait to show this to my husband! He's going to love reading about this! How tall is your shed? We found out that the zoning in our city, the height must be 7 feet or less.
