August 6, 2009: The Leaning Tower of......Tomatoes?

These three tomatoes weighed a total of four pounds, with the bottom one weighing in at 1 pound 12 ounces! The yellow tomatoes are Kellogg's Breakfast, which will most certainly be planted in 2010. The red/pink tomato is the mystery "should be a Cherokee Purple, but is probably a Brandywine". It's another winner!

The patio table is filling up fast with tomatoes. There are more than 30 pounds here.

The tomatoes that were taking up kitchen counter space became ketchup today. This was another Mrs. Wages mix. I think it is my favorite so far, but I may cut the sugar a wee bit in the next batch.

We're getting a cool evening, with a nice breeze and occasional raindrops. I'm going to fix myself a cup of tea and go sit out on the patio to enjoy it while it lasts.

  1. Gorgeous tomatoes and those Mrs. Wages mixes have been yeilding some really pretty results. I bet they taste good too!

  2. KitsapFG, the mixes are really handy for smaller amounts of tomatoes, as they take just six pounds. I don't yet know how they taste, the ketchup passed the spoon lick test, though.

  3. Are you sure you don't have a 10 acre farm out back? That's a lot of tomatoes and fine looking ones too! I can't wait to harvest some big juicy heirlooms.

  4. Nope, Dan....just an 11-foot wide strip along one side and across the back!

  5. Aw, the little garden dwarves are cute! Those are some pretty impressive tomatoes. May have to try some of those myself next round; too late for fall planting already.
And 30 lbs. of tomatoes is a big bunch of tomatoes...
Sigh, I envy you the cooler temps and raindrops. We have like a 20% chance of t-showers Friday & Sat., but no drop in temps at all...I'm melting! I'm melting...

  6. I agree with Dan, you have sooo much produce it makes me wonder if there are secret vege patches hidden away that you aren't telling us about ;) You definately are a talented gardener!!

  8. Wow (don't I always say that?) I wish I could make ketchup. I doubt there will be enough tomatoes in the NE to make salsa, much left to make ketchup.

  9. Wow Granny... you have the most prolific garden of all my blogging friends! Look at all those tomatoes!!!!

And you made your own ketchup!!!

    So inspired.. yet again!

Rained here last night but good! Have to go see if my garden survived the wind OK.

  10. Granny, you're positively swimming in tomatoes. I can't believe it.

  11. SB, I'm freezing this morning! It's only 63 degrees outside! Too bad it's raining, I'd like to be out in the garden.

    ********

Marrissa, really, it's all from my little garden! I actually have some unplanted areas right now...must get busy and plant!

    ********

GrafixMuse, thank you, yes I did. For at least ten minutes!

    ********

Daphne, I'm feeling terrible about those in the NE who are suffering through the potato/tomato blight.

    ********

Toni, I haven't checked out my garden yet this morning, but the wind really blew last night. It's raining now, and only expected to hit 82 degrees today.

Ribbit, believe it. I'd like to can plain old tomatoes, but never seem to get enough that ripen all at once to make it worthwhile. Some of the heirlooms are weird, they don't ripen evenly...the shoulders can be hard and green while the main part of the tomato is nice and ripe. They are fine for sauces, where I cook and smash/sieve them, but I'm afraid I'd get hard lumps in stewed tomatoes.

  12. Your tomatoes look so.....well, like they are supposed to, lol! Don't get me wrong, I love my deformed Heirlooms, but alot of people don't understand that they are SUPPOSED to look that way, lol! And our deluges of rain haven't helped any, mine are all cracked! Oh well, still lots of time left here in tomato season...

  13. Oh, Erin...I have my share of deformed tomatoes, I just don't always photograph them, or I turn them so the "pretty" side is up! Next time I'll put the funny ones up front ;-) I've found the misshapen ones are the best tasting ones. I have some that are picture perfect, but have lousy flavor and texture. The only variety I have that is cracking (and not from rain!) is Better Boy. They are the only ones I have that are properly trained and trellised, and they have all cracked.

  14. Oh geese, I can only set back in envy.

  15. John, I wish I could send you some...it's so sad about your tomatoes.

  16. Granny - I didn't know Mrs. Wages had a ketchup mix...where did you get it? That is alot of tomatoes, and it's great that you preserved them somehow. So, how is that Kellogg's breakfast? I might grow it next year....

  17. EG, I'm finding the Mrs. Wages mixes at Wal*Mart. I'm going to get another ketchup, we really liked that one.

I really like Kellogg's breakfast. It's not as mild (bland) tasting as other yellow tomatoes, yet has a nice sweetness to it. It's so pretty sliced with the big red ones.

  18. Your little garden friends look like some serious mischief makers. The expressions on their faces reminds me of some I've seen on my little niece's face when she's been up to no good.

I've got a serious case of tomato envy!!

  19. Cheryl, those are my garden helpers! I wish they'd help out in the kitchen when I have that mountain of tomatoes staring at me.
