June 27, 2010: I've Hit 100!

I officially went over 100 pounds of garden produce today, eight days earlier than last year. Last night I was at 99.979, and I should have run out to the garden for a head of lettuce or something to put me over a day earlier, LOL!

I picked another big bowl of Contender bush beans and dug around the potato plants, foraging for enough new potatoes for another potato salad. Mr. Granny might not have liked the raspberry cream cheese pie, but he sure did scarf down that potato salad, and begged for more!

A pound of green beans.

Kennebec potatoes are sizing up nicely.

Speaking of the raspberry pie, the recipe can be found HERE. If I made it again, I would make more cream cheese filling, less of the raspberry. I'm thinking Jell-O Cheesecake pie filling (maybe with a bit of cream cheese beaten into it) for a creamier pie, topped with half a recipe of the raspberry filling. Mr. Granny still wouldn't eat it, but our kids would have no problem consuming every bite. Which is what they did with the "stupid pie" today.

The Frugal Side of Me

When the company my daughter, Amy, works for replaced their poolside furniture, I inherited this sturdy chaise lounge. It was comfortable enough, but not so much that Mr. Granny or I could sneak a bit of an afternoon nap on the patio. I priced pads for it, and found them to be in the $65-$75 price range. That's way more than I felt they are worth, so the frugal side of me decided I could make a pad much cheaper.

I found a large, thick comforter at Wal-Mart, on sale for $13. I folded the comforter into thirds, and it was a perfect fit for the chaise. Armed with needle and thread, I sewed up the top and bottom, and tacked down a few places to hold the layers together.

Once I add ties to the top and bottom corners and the center, where the chaise folds, I think I'll have a pretty cute pad, that will also be washable and reversible. And comfortable! I'm sure Annie and Otto will think so.

  1. How did you reach 100 lbs already Gran?! Seriously! I'm not even half there yet.

That's awesome. You are definitely the master gardener.

  5. Thomas, I harvested nearly thirty pounds this week. I think I'm headed for lighter harvests in the next few weeks though, unless the beans keep coming on strong and the remaining cabbages head up.

    Thanks, meemsnyc.

Kitsap, I even set up a big fan near by, and set my radio to the light jazz station. Tomorrow I'll try that nap, and hope the flies and mosquitoes leave me alone.

Thanks, Holly. The next goal is 500 pounds!

  6. Ah 100 lbs. Congrats! I've got a while for that benchmark. I remember from last year doing about a fifth of what you do. I'm slightly up from that this year as I'm at 23lbs right now. It is going to be hard keeping up this year though. I didn't do any successions in the greens bed at the old house. It is almost harvested out already. Now my summer crops have to start. At least the weather has been good for the summer crops. I had the first zucchini blossom open at the old house, but no males to be seen. I hope it can live until one opens. I've never had a female as the first blossom before.

  7. Very cool lounge chair pad. How neat that it was the perfect size. I can't believe you've hit 100 already, but then again, last year you were over a thousand, right?

  8. Yay granny! Congrats on 100 lbs -- that's fabulous and so inspiring! We're still eating greens here.. lots of lettuce, spinach and radishes :)
With your green thumb, you'll be at 500 lbs in no time!

  9. Wow that's quite a feat! I am nowhere near that, LOL, and won't be for quite some time, thanks to the fact that I don't grow the heavy stuff - I don't like zucchini and squash. I LOVE the cushion cover, it's way better looking than those same old prints all the premade ones come in!

  10. Daphne, it remains to be seen if I can hit over 1000 again this year, with no pumpkins to add to the total. Maybe those extra tomato plants will put me over.

Ribbit, I'm so happy the wrinkles didn't show in the photo. The lounge pad wrinkles, that is....mine always show, dammit. Once I finish the sewing, I'll fluff it in the dryer.

Yes, I was up around 1075 pounds last year. I mean my garden production was. I think personally I was up around 150, though, which is way too much but so be it.

Fiona, we're also still eating greens, and more greens and more greens! The refrigerator is full of greens, and the lettuce is out in the garden screaming "Cut me, cut me!"

  11. Erin, I'm with you on the cover. I find it bright and cheerful, and it really compliments the rose bush that's next to it with its bright colors.

  12. Granny, I love the cushion you made! It is very inviting!! And it is always so nice to know that you made it for so much less that the cost of buying it!!

100 lbs!! Go, Granny! Go, Granny! Go, Granny! I wish I had weighed all the crops that I grew over the winter and harvested in early spring. I had lettuce, cabbage, and mustard greens. When the harvest comes in over a long period of time, you don't realize how much it all adds up!!

  13. Debiclegg, I wish I'd have weighed the lettuce, radishes and tomatoes I grew in AZ, too. I didn't even weigh what we brought home with us to eat! It would easily have been another 5 pounds or more, I'm sure.
