February 27, 2012 - Blogger Headaches....Again

Am I the only one having Blogger problems recently?

You may have noticed I changed my template today. For some reason, there is now no option to be notified by email if you get a reply to your comment. This is what my comment box (and most of those I visit) looks like now:

There used to be an option to subscribe to comments by email. That option disappeared today. In fact every Blogger page I visit is the same unless it has this type of comment box....

I played around with a new template in another (unused) blog of mine, and the it showed the lower (good) comment box. I changed my Annie's Kitchen Garden template over to the new one, but the old (bad) comment box came back....still no option to subscribe to comments. I imported this blog into that unused one and the good comment box was there, but as soon as I changed the name it went back to the bad comment box! I've cleared my cache, I've rebooted the computer, all to no avail. The only thing I haven't done is put word verification back on.

I am getting so frustrated with Blogger I imported the blog into Word Press, but not all of the comments transferred over, so I'm still working on it. If I get it up and running, and learn how to use it, I'll begin using Word Press instead of Blogger. Or maybe I'll just close this blog down and start a new one with a different name and link back to the old one. I'm too old to deal with all these recent blogger frustrations!

  1. I know someone with a Wordpress blog and she complains about technical difficulties a lot. I don't know if it is better or worse. I do like that you can reply to a specific comment in Wordpress though.

  2. Oh my, it looks like I have missed a lot of frustrating times in the past few days! I will be posting tomorrow and I will let you know if I have any problems.

I love the new layout Granny!

  3. The email notification disappearing really makes no sense. I think blogger is trying to get all of their code switched to the new look and are breaking stuff that works while they do it. Disappointing. Hang in there. It may pop back.

  4. Granny did you take a look under setting to see if there is something you can change at that level? I'm not having any of these issues but I just let people comment freely. I will remove anything I feels should not be on there... but I also don't have the traffic you have on your blog. :-)

  5. I like the new look, but not the frustration you are having with blogger. I have my business website on WordPress.org. It has its own challenges as well.

  6. I am so sorry you are having such a hard time with blogger. I hope everything gets worked out soon.

  7. sorry to hear you are having problems. Are you using the new interface for blogger? if so I think there is a trick you can use to get that feature back if you are still using the old interface then i'm stumped!

I should warn you as of March first all non-blogger blogs will no longer be able to use the Google friend connect. So people will not be able to use that to follow you and you cannot use it to see who is following you. Just encase you move everything over to word press you will lose that feature. If you stay with blogger then you will still have it though

  8. I don't remember seeing a 'subscribe by email to replies' on blogger blogs. Sure it was there but I guess I just overlooked it. I've had the comment box you posted today for so long I don't remember not seeing it. Maybe changing your template forced an update of some sorts on you? Or did you change who could leave a comment because that may have done it. When you allow for all the different commenters, like OpenID, ... , that would force the new comment box on you I'd think.

I could be wrong, though. Sometimes I just don't get Google.

  9. Daphne, I was afraid of that. Plus it's a whole new learning curve for me, I'm so used to Blogger.

    ********
Robin, I used to be able to click on a button to have replies to YOUR blog sent to my email. Now I don't have that option. It not only doesn't show up under my comment box, it doesn't show up under yours either!

    ********
Gardener on Sherlock, I sure hope so. That's the only way I can keep track of a response to a comment I make on someone else's blog. Yours has the "good" comment box, with the option to subscribe by email. That's what mine is missing.

    ********
Liisa, the only thing I changed was the word verification setting and removed my email address so comments to my blog wouldn't be sent to me. I changed the email setting back, but that made no difference. If I leave it in, I get a dozen or more porno spams a day in my email in box!

    ********
Rachel, I might as well stay with
Blogger then. At least I can just cuss a lot and not have to learn something all over again.

    ********
Thanks, Christy. I hope so too....or I'll need to get some blood pressure meds!

    ********
Mra. P., I'm still using the old interface. I wish blogger would just leave well enough alone. Change isn't always for the better with them!

    ********
Teresa, I didn't change the template until after the problem started. That was WHY I changed it. The "subscribe" link was on the new template when I tested it on the other blog. When I apply it (the new template) to this one it reverts back to the one without the option.

Settings on my other blog have not been touched...still require word verification and all comments are forwarded to my email. The "subscribe" option is gone on it, too.

  10. I have been having problems since I switched to the new interface. My biggest problem right now is that Blogger keeps signing me out. I'll not realize it, go to post a comment and then lose it since I'm not signed in.

  11. Ed, I'm tearing my hair out here! I even started a new blog with a new name, I checked, and it had the "subscribe" link. I copied my last two posts to it, and it still had the link. I changed it to not show a verification word and lost the "subscribe" link. Went back and changed to show the verify word but the link was still gone. There is now no way to subscribe to comments on your blog. That means I'd have to check back every day to see if you replied to a comment from me! Multiply that by the 20 or so blogs I comment on daily, and there is no way I could remember where they all were!

  12. Annie, it sounds like your issues are more than just normal issues with new changes. Maybe waiting it out, looking for solutions and finding them will fix the problem. You're "Granny", and you're an expert blogger! That's more than the rest of us.

  13. Have you tried using embedded comments rather than the pop-up box for them? In case you need it, it's under Settings>Comments>Comment Form Placement.

  14. If it makes you feel any better, I don't think it has anything to do with you getting a new template. I noticed my comment box is reformatted too and my email option is missing.

I don't like the new box at all either. If you resize the box to make it larger, your comments don't adjust with it.

  15. I also concur with Sherlock Street, as an IT developer this is easy to spot. They have "enhanced" the comment form, in the IT world we call that "broken by design."

  16. Teresa (Rani) THAT WORKED! Thank you, I love you more than ever!

    ********
Jody, Rani fixed it with the embedded comments rather than the pop-up I always used before.

    ********
Kris, you probably won't see this comment, so I'll email you with what Rani suggested.

  17. I'm as close to quitting blogging as I can be . One more blogger "improvement" and I'm going to consider it not worth it. I don't adjust well to change. Luckily, I'm at the age that I don't put up with the aggravation any more. I just "move on".

    1. Sue, you don't know how close I came yesterday! I'm with you, Blogger just needs to leave well enough alone.

  18. I've seen this several times this morning as I went through my reader. I'm hoping the comments will be automatically sent, yikes! Can you imagine having to remember which blogs you need to check to be able to see everyone else's comments, headache! I was going to freshen up/update my blog look today and now I'm scared :)

  19. p.s. I WAS able to "subscribe" to comments on this post at the bottom, hopefully it will stay there!

    1. Erin, thankfully, Teresa found the answer....for now. I had no idea embedding the comments would be any different than using the pop-up window. I emailed Kris so he could change his, now I need to see who else is having the problem.
