May 11, 2012 - And the Winner Is....

1st. Man!

Prairie Cat, from Back to Basics, had a drawing to celebrate her 100th. post.   I happened to be the lucky winner, but since I already subscribe to Mike the Gardener's Seeds of the Month Club, I requested the prize be given to 1st. Man for his very first veggie garden at his Little Farm.

Thank you, Prairie Cat, and happy growing, 1st. and 2nd. Man!

    1. Sue, it actually got colder this morning than it was yesterday, although we didn't get the frost warning! I woke up around 4:30 and checked the morning news. They said it was 31 degrees out at that time, so I got up and checked and we had 38. So we are evidently consistently 5-7 degrees higher than the reported temps. I think it must be because we are close to the river and in town and surrounded by warm buildings. NOW it's supposed to get warmer (that's what they said yesterday).

  3. Granny, I don't know what to say, you are indeed a kind, generous and special lady. It's funny how something like seeds can inspire me but I'm inspired now to work hard and get our garden whipped into shape. Thank you again for sharing, it means the world to me. :-)

    1. 1st. Man, as anxious as I am to watch your garden grow, if you store those seeds in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer (then bring them to room temp before opening), they will easily last until your next gardening season. You have a lot going right now, but wouldn't it be nice to have the seeds already on hand when you do get the garden going?

PS: You had three of your fans entering your name for the drawing! Stay @ Home and Jenny also requested you receive the seeds if they won.

    2. OK, y'all will get me all misty eyed. :-)

Thanks, I will treasure them and who knows what might get planted around here. You all have lit my fire, I'm going to start working on the garden area this weekend. And by working I mean starting to get the ground prepped so I can put up a fence.

Thank you again, sometimes I miss those contests, I would have entered myself if I had caught it. Speaking of, it might just be time for me to host a contest of my own. Let me give that some thought. :-)

  4. Hi Annie, Lucky you and lucky 1st man! I bought a four pack of sweet green peppers. Some of them were double. A couple I divided and planted and a couple I left just like they were in the four pack and planted. What should I have done????? Thanks! Nancy at Cozy Thyme Cottage

    1. Nancy, the plants will get quite large. I plant single plants and space them a minimum of 12" apart (16" is even better) or one plant to a container that's at least 12" across the top, preferably larger.

    2. Thanks Annie, I planted them in a five gallon pail each. I guess I should just snip off the second one in the two pails I left the two together, huh? Nancy

    3. Why not experiment? Let them go, and if they look stressed or don't grow as well as the others, then snip one off. That pail is so large, it might just work for you! LOL, then we'll all be growing double peppers in five gallon pails next year!
