June 30, 2012 - So You Think It's Hot?

We've been enjoying cooler than normal temperatures all month, so I do feel sorry for you who are sweltering in 106F heat.  I can sympathize.  Look at the following July record temperatures for our town (they didn't have a chart for June).  We get quite used to 100+ days!

  1. Ah, but it's a dry heat..........

We're not bad here either--upper 80's/low 90's. I feel for those in the south. All that humidity-UGH.

    1. Sue, that's true. Although when I was in 118 degree heat in Arizona, it didn't feel any hotter than 100 degree heat here. We're just a couple of blocks from the Columbia River, and there is also a lot of irrigation around us, so it's can get a bit humid. Not as bad as in the south, though.

  2. Here in 'sunny' Middlesbrough (UK) I can only dream of temperatures in the 70's never mind the 80's or 90's, we are only hitting 17c at best and to all those over the pond that's about 62f, it's very wet and quite cold for the time of year.

    1. That is quite cold, Happy Plotter. We had an entire week in June that was consistently in the mid-60s, but it's been in the 80s and 90s most weeks. That's hot enough for me!

  3. According the the same place you get yours from, we never have 100s in July. Not one record exceeds 99F. But they lie. We have had that here in the summer. But the records aren't for my house, they are for Bedford MA I think. But we do get the humidity. It can just drip here. Our average high for July is 82F. Which isn't too bad.

    1. Daphne, our weather is typically about 4 degrees higher than The Weather Channel reports, and they give our average July high as 90F.

  4. If you're too hot, you could swing down to the Willamette Valley for a day or two. It's a bit chilly for the plants, but perfect weather for the people. It's sandal weather, but just cool enough that you won't be sweaty. If I weren't trying to grow tomatoes and peppers and eggplants I would love this weather. >.<

    1. I'm not too hot yet, Anywhere. I've been loving this cooler than normal weather, even if the tomato plants don't!

  5. Goodness at this summers heat.We had our first 107* day yesterday and it was murder. I'm from Tennessee so there is quite a bit of humidity in my area. Days like that I want to ignore the garden and hide inside infront of the air conditioning.

    1. LNL, if it gets above 90F here, I hibernate inside the house! Last year we didn't get a single day in the triple digits. It was a really nice summer for people, but the worst ever for my garden. This year has been below normal, but looks like we'll be heading up into the 90s for most of July. That means it will most likely be 100+ before the end of the month.

  6. It's still hot here in Georgia. At noon, CNN is saying 100 degrees. I just know it's HOT. We're accustomed to hot summers here, but until now, this year has been pleasant. I thought Atlanta held the record for that miserable combination of heat and humidity. i thought that until the summer I visited in Houston -- far worse.

    1. Dianefaith, in a couple of weeks I'll probably be joining you in complaining about the hot weather. I don't consider anything in the 90s or higher pleasant!

  7. If it gets hotter than 80 I'm a cranky person.... I really hope we don't have any rolling blackouts this summer, because I'd really like to use the AC!

    1. Nartaya, in my perfect world, it would be 80 degrees every day and 60-65 degrees every night! I do not like air conditioning, but I'm very happy that we have it, and that we don't have to deal with power outages here.

  8. Oh, I dislike heat and humidity. We're in the mid 90's today and it is brutal out in the sun. I'll be hiding with a book in the AC soon and the garden is on its own. Hoping for a pop-up shower this afternoon so I don't have to water. But at least we have electricity, unlike those poor souls in states like VA which got socked with those storms the other day. Can't complain.

    1. Nutmeg, that's for sure. Not only did they get record breaking heat, but with no electricity can you imagine the food spoilage. That would be especially heartbreaking to the gardener who freezes his/her own harvest.

  10. We just have it pretty good here. In general, although it can be too dry, the weather is sort of perfect. Sorry for the rest of the country, usually.

  11. LOL on the dry heat comments, but it is true. I went to Vegas once and on a Hoover dam tour the tour guide said it was 118 degrees right now. I was wearing jeans and a polo shirt and was quite comfortable.

I am 100 miles south of Atlanta. Yesterday it was 106 degrees and 50% humidity and 65 degree dew point and it was bad. The plus side, once we get back down to low to mid 90's and normal humidity it will feel like fall. I can take the heat, I JUST WANT RAIN!!!

    1. Kris, in AZ 118 degree heat, the only time it really bothered me was when I was walking across a blacktop parking lot. Getting from the car to the grocery store and back was like walking into an oven.

We have irrigation water, so the lack of rain doesn't really hurt us. I adjust to the heat by only going out early in the morning and near dusk. It's 89 in the shade right now, and I'm baking! I mean I'm in the kitchen baking rolls and zucchini bread!

  13. I'm glad your cooler than normal. We've had some days over 100 already but 109!! Yikes, I'm pretty sure my house would melt and I would spontaneously combust at 109.

    1. Stoney Acres, our local TV station has forecast temps in the low to mid 100s beginning next week, so our cool days are ending. So far, in the high 80s and low 90s, I've been comfortable with just the ceiling fans running, but I think I'm real close to turning on the AC.
