November 25, 2009: Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Myspace Graphics

Mr. H and I will be having a quiet Thanksgiving celebration at home, with only the two dogs in attendance. I'm roasting a big turkey to serve with dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, Waldorf salad, crescent rolls and a (store bought!) pumpkin pie. Can you believe I left all my home grown pumpkin puree in the freezer up in Washington? I won't have to cook for a week, we'll have so many leftovers! I'm sure the pups will help, as they love turkey, green beans and sweet potatoes. Annie and I are just going to ignore the calories consumed this week.

I have covered my little AZ salad garden with netting, to keep out birds. It looks as though that was the culprit that was eating the seedlings, so I've replanted the spinach and started some lettuce seedlings in pots to transplant later. I didn't look at my planting guide, relying on memory instead, and dug up the beets thinking that was where I'd planted spinach! Now I have tiny beets sprouting up between the newly planted spinach rows.....that box is going to be a real mess if everything comes up! I can see the carrots today, 16 days after planting the seeds. The first red onion, from sets planted ten days ago, has also sprouted. The two Patio tomato plants are thriving, putting out new growth, new baby tomatoes and more blossoms. They are residing on the south side of the house, in the hot sun, during the day, and Mr. H packs them in each night before the temperature drops below 50F.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving Granny! We had ours mid Oct although we don't celebrate holidays really. Some turkey and fixings do sound pretty good though, I may just have to cook up a bird soon. The tomato plants looks really happy!

  7. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Granny! We are spending a quiet day here at home with the dog and cats. We ALL love turkey :)

Turkey is in the oven and all the veggies are prepped and on the stove ready to cook. Should be a great feast here too.

    Have a wonderful day!

  8. Dan, a belated happy Thanksgiving to you! The tom plants do seem happy, even though there is some damage to the older leaves, which must have happened at Lowe's or in transit here (looks like leaf miner damage, though), the new growth is healthy and unscathed.

Thank you, Dot. I don't think one needs a special holiday for turkey dinner anymore, I find it one of the easiest large meals to cook!

    ********
Ribbit, happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Ps-I'm going shopping next weekend ;-)

    ********
Thomas, as I am thankful for your friendship. Love to you, Marc and Jonathan.

Rachel, my turkey is in the oven, the stuffing in the crockpot, and the sweet potatoes in the casserole. The giblets/liver & heart have been simmered, the broth refrigerated for making gravy later, and the solids given to the pups for their first special treat of the day. Not much more to do before dinner. One thing about Thanksgiving at home with just Mr. H and the dogs, there's no pressure. When the turkey's done, we eat...we don't have to look at the clock!

    ********
Daphne, those pups are just a wee bit spoiled ;-) They know they'll get their share of the turkey!

    ********
Sue, I love that pansy...it's such a delicate color, it reminds me of the color of winter. That's rather nice here in the desert with all the brown!

    ********
Maureen, thank you and the same to you and your family. Ya, my babies are kinda special ;-)

  11. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I don't know why you had problems - sorry about that. I don't check it often at this time of year because I think of it as my "summer" blog (garden) and I've switched over to my "winter" blog (vintage things and repurposing).

Love that you had a pressure free Thanksgiving. I did too.

  12. Love the picture of the pups! What a pair!

Happy Thanksgiving AG and Mr. H! We spent the day at my sister in laws house. Made the pumpkin pies to take along from one of the garden pumpkins. Today we are just hanging out at home doing our annual Christmas decorating process. It's a tradition we have of not shopping on Black Friday but instead decorating the house and tree and watching old movies. :D

  13. KitsapFG, we're being lazy today, consuming leftovers. Yesterday we even took the pup's collars off for the day, so they could be more comfortable after the big turkey dinner! All four of us ate way too much.

  14. I hope you are enjoying all of those left-overs today Granny!

  15. We did just that, Kelly! I'm beginning to see some empty spaces in the refrigerator now, LOL.

  16. Sure hope you and Mr H had a wonderful Thanksgiving, but I wish you had told me, I would have sent down the extra pumpkin pie. ;) Have a great weekend!

P.S. Have you ordered any of the hometown seeds before?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Di, I'll take that pie!

I haven't tried the Hometown seeds yet. I checked out their website when they requested I add their link, and it looked OK. I also googled for any reviews on the company, and came up with nothing (sounds like they are new). They are sending me some seeds to try, so I'll know more by spring. If I hear anything bad about the company, the ad will be removed. OTOH, I do recommend Ohio Heirloom Seeds, even if they don't send me freebies ;-)

    1. Kelli, I'm laughing so hard I have tears running down my face. I read that as "granny, i googled asylum images, saw your picture" LOL!!!

I still get a bit of a shock when I Google something and see my posts or photos come up. Who knew, back in July of 2008, that I'd still be here on Blogger four years later? With people actually reading and following my blogs!
