May 23, 2011 - Harvest Monday

Harvest totals were down this week, due to the glut of lettuce harvested last week. My refrigerator will only hold so much.

5/17 - One lonely onion was pulled for a salad, and to free up a bit of room for a volunteer tomato that I may or may not decide to keep. About 1 ounce of goodness.

5/18 - 28 ounces of Iceberg lettuce

5/22 - 23 ounces of Tyee spinach.

5/22 - 23 ounces of Buttercrunch lettuce.

5/22 - 2 ounces radishes and about 1 ounce of the first strawberries of the year. The strawberries were consumed immediately after the picture was taken.

Total harvest for the week: 4 pounds 11 ounces
Total harvest for the year to date: 18 pounds

Please join in the Monday Harvest at Daphne's Dandelions!

  2. Awesome harvest! The strawberries don't even make it for a picture around here...too many grand kids.

  3. Nice harvest, granny. Also, I noticed that you have the same yearly harvest total as me so far. No pressure - but this could be the year, especially with 13 melon vines growing....Hehe..

  4. Allison, they were actually not very flavorful! I think it's just too cold to get sweet berries right now, they take too long to ripen.

    ********
Lynda, I always get first pick from the garden, as I'm the only one who does any work out there. You can bet I'll be the one eating that first handful of raspberries once they ripen!

EG, you'll win this year hands down. I didn't plant anything that gives my harvests much weight, other than the butternut squash. Even those are a bush rather than vining variety, so I'm not sure what the yield will be like.

  5. A little behind you. I weighed my harvest for the first time this weekend. I had right at a pound total of radishes, lettuce and spinach. My husband "caught" me weighing my greens and thought it was quite funny.

  6. Langela, it takes them a while, but they soon get used to it. Mr. Granny just takes it for granted that I'm not going to let him eat a bite from his plate until I photograph it, and he doesn't even think about touching my harvest until it's weighed. My kids know nothing leaves this house before being weighed and photographed. It just becomes habit after a while.

  7. You are a strong woman, I rarely even weigh my starwberries. :-D

  8. Such pretty radishes. Mine are so mangled from the ants. My husband occasionally laughs when I'm taking a photo of dinner, but he never does when I photograph the harvest.

  9. Barbie, when you're in competition with Daphne, every ounce counts! Unfortunately, my kitchen scale doesn't weigh in fractions of ounces.

Daphne, those are a few that survived the quail attack. I might end up with a dozen radishes from the entire row. At least the ants didn't find them. Yet.

  11. It's all lovely. And strawberries! Yum. I bet they'll be a lot more next week.

  12. Random, if the leaf miners had stayed out of the spinach, I'd have had a really good year for it. As it is, I doubt I'll even come close to last year's harvest.

Marcia, they are a day neutral variety that always starts out slowly, but picks up pretty well as the days get hotter. I have a lot of blossoms, but the weather just won't cooperate.

  13. Gosh, I am so envious of all your lettuce and spinach you have harvested lately! I sowed a bunch of seeds a few months ago and still haven't been able to harvest any of it, even though they should be thriving in this brisk, rainy weather.

  14. That's not a bad harvest at all, it will help give a lot of flavor to the other dishes..

  15. Prairie Cat, I wish I could share with you! My fridge runneth over ;-)

  16. The first strawberries-how wonderful!!!!!!!!!! I figure they are reward for surviving another cold, endless spring! Did ya wrestle Mr. Granny for the extra one?
    LOL!

  17. Nice harvest! I need to try spinach again, since I finally got the swiss chard and carrots to grow this year. I have high hopes!

  18. Ginny, it's almost all gone already! The rabbit still has some lettuce, but I'm ready for another picking.

    ********
Sue, I didn't even tell Mr. Granny we had strawberries! I'm old, not stupid ;-)

    ********
Katrina, I do hope I get to try the chard before the leaf miners ruin it all. They're in the spinach and beets now, too. The spinach has been sooooo good!

  19. AG those radishes look so good. Can't wait until I can have some. Maybe in a month.

  20. Wilderness, I guess I should try another planting of radishes. It's pretty late here, but our weather has been so cold they might have a chance. The earlier plantings were nearly all ruined by ants and quail.

  21. Your iceberg lettuce looks really good. What variety did you plant? I have been super pleased with my head lettuce this year. I planted 10 heads and it is still going strong even in 95 degree weather. I have been picking for over a month now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Kris, the variety is "Iceberg". ;-)

It still hasn't begun to form heads, but I noticed my Summercrisp is beginning to form them now. I'm happy to hear the Iceberg holds well in the heat. I've had good luck with Red Sails through the summer, too.

  23. The spinach looks delicious! I found some swiss chard growing wild near my garden. I was going to pick it but then I remembered somebody mentioning to me, that swiss chard is real hard to chew. It's better to cook that one down and then eat it.

    Thanks for the delicious pictures!

  24. Well.. for a "light week" of harvesting that sure looks like a heck of a lot to me! LOL! The strawberries look particularly wonderful. My poor strawberry patch has been mowed down by a rabid rabbit. Got it under a netting cover now but it has really been set back by the rabbit attack. I hope it recovers and gets back growing again.

  25. ZZ, I have yet to taste chard. Last year we left for AZ just as it was getting large enough to pick, and it didn't overwinter. This year's planting is still quite small, but I might pick a bit to try it.

    ********
Kitsap, my poor strawberry patch was mowed down by me! I got a bit carried away when I renewed it this spring, but it should fill out again soon.

  26. Everything looks perfect Granny! I am a bit jealous of that spinach and those strawberries. My spinach didn't do a thing this spring. If the sun ever comes out maybe we will get some red strawberries.

  27. Oh dear dear AG-I love you even more! It is DAYS before I let hubby know the strawberries/blueberries/whatever are producing.I thought I was being a horrible person. OMG-I laughed so hard when you said you didn't tell Mr. Granny about the strawberries.
    You're all right!!
    :D

  28. Robin, I actually have quite a few strawberry plants this year, but I don't think they are ever going to get ripe with this weather.

    ********
Sue, Sue, Sue. I have NEVER lied to Mr. Granny....I just don't tell him everything. I haven't stayed married all these years by being stupid. :-D
