November 17, 2012 - John Digs Autumn Leaves

Son John came by today to chop up a few of the leaves I got from the neighbor last week.

He dumped eight bags of leaves onto the lawn and ran over them with the lawnmower, then spread them out on the north garden.

He tilled them in once, then made another pass.  He even got back into the corner where the kennel used to be.

The entire north garden got a good layer of leaves dug in for the winter.

I'll leave it rough all winter, then rake it into wide beds in early spring.  Once the beds are formed, I'll top them off with more leaves that have been composting over the winter, and a good layer of composted manure.  That will be turned into the top few inches of each bed and allowed to settle before planting.

Hopefully the weather will be nice enough to chop a few more bags of leaves and till them into the east garden tomorrow.

  1. I used to chop leaves for the compost and garden years ago, but I just don't have a good spot here. I suppose I could do it on the front lawn but I'd have to haul everything into the front then into the back again. The last house was nicer. I kept the leaves right where I'd chop them. And I could keep them in a bin until I was ready. So now all my leaves are whole. They don't break down as fast. But it is less work.

    1. Daphne, wanna borrow John? LOL, I wouldn't get them all chopped and tilled in without him, I would probably get them chopped (eventually) and piled up! I think the old tiller is on its last legs, so I hope I get the rest of the garden done before it dies.

  2. Good job, John!! Your soil looks amazing! I have been so busy with design work that I haven't had the time to work with the leaves this fall. I usually do a huge circular mow to shred and gather the leaves into the center of the yard, then use the grass and leaf mix to fill the bins. The extra goes into a pile near the bins so that I can add to the bins over the season. K did fill up both sections in the compost bin with raked leaves. They will take longer to break down but at least it is something.

    1. Rachel, John was saying how great the soil looked in certain spots....turned out to be my pathways, LOL! I am going to build my beds in a different direction this year, and he has dug added width which will be helpful. I'll try to reroute the pathways and put them along the fence line. Mr. Granny is beginning to talk pickup buying again, so maybe I'll get my garden poo yet!

  4. I love using chopped leaves for mulch in my flower beds. My rotten sand needs all the help it can get.

  6. Granny, you should get a leaf blower/vacuum/mulcher. I think mine was about $40 from Lowe's. I've had it about 5 years and wouldn't be without it. So much better than a lawnmower with a mulching blade. And, much quicker. Turns 10 bags of leaves into maybe 1 bag. I use the leaves in my compost tumbler and in my beds. They decompose so much faster when they are really mulched up fine!

    1. Spiderjohn, I hate to tell you I have one, but Mr. Granny said it was a pain to put the leaf catcher on and now he doesn't know what he did with the attachments. I bought it (from Sears) on sale at a time when we didn't need it for leaves, so by the time I did need it he'd already lost the part(s?)and the directions!

  7. What a wonderful son! You raised him right, Granny. Either that, or he grew up right despite your efforts to ruin him! ;)
