May 1, 2013 - One Last Time!

Every night they come in the house.  We've had temperatures below 30F the past few nights, but I'm going to trust the weatherman when he says we'll be in the 40s by tomorrow night.  There isn't a freeze warning for tonight, but it's close enough that I'm not taking a chance, so I brought the plants in one last time!  Tomorrow they will all get planted in the garden (except for those in containers).  Ten tomato plants and 11 peppers were already planted last week, and they survived the low temperatures just fine with minimal cover.   *Update, the local TV station is just now forecasting 29F for tonight.

  1. My dining room looks just like this. I carry alllll of my starts outside when it's sunny and warm. And then I carry alllll of my starts back inside at night because it's still dipping below 40 at night even though it's 80 during the day. It's a process and labor of love. :)

  2. I do this for the month of May because we get the warm daytime temps but always know our last frost date isn't until June 1. I hate this time of year....in/out, in/out. Those plants end up more well travelled than me-LOL!

It's been a roller coaster of temps, hasn't it? I hope you get the relief from hauling you've been promised!
    Have a good weekend

    1. Sue, it sure does build muscles! I've transferred 48 of the plants to two asparagus crates, and when they've just been watered they can get really heavy. Still beats carrying 6 at a time in plastic shoe boxes.

  3. I was lucky this year. The temps didn't swing very much in the spring. So we had pretty normal temperatures all along. No weird low spots. No rain, but at least the temps were normal.

    1. Daphne, we've hit a high of 77 and a low of 28 in just this week. That's a pretty wicked swing. Below normal most days, now we're supposed to hit above normal for a while.

  4. In half of Iowa they are getting up to 6 inches of snow today. We are not in that half, but close enough that I'm sure summer will never come again. I may have to come to your house for fresh veggies.

    1. Langela, you can't come unless you bring the fresh bread, cinnamon rolls and Mr. Farmer. I have a few chores for him.

    3. Yay! Mine are probably about 18" high now, but I only got one pea vine from my entire large packet of shelling peas. Boo...no more Burpee seeds for me!

  5. What a crazy year! It's hard to believe that you are still getting < 30 at night in May! Looks like we are staying warmer but getting lots of rain this month.
