  1. Isn't this just the best time of year, when so much food is coming out of the garden?

    I love seeing the variety of vegetables you've been harvesting. It gives me ideas for next year. My husband has been mentioning corn a lot.

    1. Phuong, last night I had the dinner veggies lined up on the counter, getting them ready to cook. It was a beautiful sight...yellow crookneck squash, fresh green beans and carrots for a mixed vegetable dish, a small cabbage, an onion and a red bell pepper for the coleslaw, two ears of fresh picked corn and two big red potatoes. There was actually so much, I put the corn back for today. I doubt I ate more than 2 ounces of the steak I had grilled, there were so many lovely veggies! I love the Honey Select corn. It certainly outperformed the Early Sunglow in size and taste, and it holds its sweetness for days in the fridge.

  2. Hi Granny ~ It's funny to me to see strawberries next to ripe tomatoes. I live in the Philadelphia suburbs. Our strawberries are producing in June, usually tomatoes not ready until now, at best. Growing onions for the first time... how do I know when to pull them?

    1. Karen, those are a day neutral (everbearing) strawberry. I get about one month of pretty good yields, then they'll give me small pickings right up until they freeze next winter. I assume you have a one crop (June bearing) berry. We had strawberry shortcake again last night, with berries brought straight in from the garden!

      You can pull your onions at any time, from small scallion size to full storage size. To let them grow to maturity, you wait until the tops fall over. They'll get kind of soft at the neck, where the tops bend over, then they won't grow any more. Pull them and let them dry until the tops are really dry. Don't wash them, you can brush excess dirt off with your hands. I put mine in the garden shed, on an old window screen, to dry. A covered patio or a dry basement would also work.

    1. Ribbit, I'm trying to get a fall garden going this year. Hopefully, we'll be in the low 90s or even high 80s this coming week. It's been too hot to get out there for more than a few minutes at a time!

  4. Looks like a good week in your gardens! Mine have really slowed down, except my tomatoes are coming in pretty good now. I just have so much end rot. I added powdered egg shells so hopefully that helps. I've had to pick literally dozens and toss them to the chickens.

    1. Langela, sometimes that happens with tomatoes early on, then they suddenly stop rotting and produce just fine. I have one variety of tomato that is VFNT resistant, and every one of them is succumbing to VFN or T! Well, not the T, because they're not exposed to tobacco. Only four of the 16 I planted are going to survive, and I'm finding some rotted tomatoes on one of those. Not blossom end rot, but all over rot, like a tomato with blight. I don't know what is causing that, as the foliage looks terrific. I'm not planning on having enough to can this year.

  5. 399.9 ounces of potatoes!! Wow, that is one good harvest! I wonder how many potatoes I have in the pots. I don't think they do as well in pots as they do in the ground. Love your strawberries! What variety is it? You are so much ahead of me in zucchini, cukes, broccoli - none of which are set in my garden yet!

    1. Random, I grew a few in large containers this year, and the yield wasn't good at all.

      The strawberries are Tristar, a day neutral (everbearing) variety. I'm begging people to take cukes, summer squash and zucchini off my hands now! I took five big grocery bags of garden produce to a son this week, I just couldn't get any more in the fridge and my freezers are already full.

  8. What a nice haul from your garden. Anything you could want. With our cold, wet spring, I'm still waiting for squash and cucumbers and the beans are just starting to bear. And I'm supposed to start planning a fall garden now?

    1. I don't know, David, Mother Nature can't be trusted this year! I have planted some things for fall, but it's hard going out there to plant when it's 100-plus degrees outside. Maybe if it cools down a bit I'll get in the mood. It seems like we went from winter to summer and skipped spring. I hope we don't go from summer to winter and skip fall.

  9. It sure is nice to get so many varieties in a single harvest. How in the world did you manage that? Isn't there also lettuce still growing? I'm always in awe looking at your harvests. And I keep telling myself, someday I'll be able to do what Granny does!

    1. Yes, I've actually been putting more lettuce in the compost barrel than in the fridge! We've been eating more tomatoes and cucumbers, and fewer salads, and there's just too much lettuce out there. I noticed some of the Red Sails is beginning to bolt now, so it's time to get some seedlings out for fall.

  10. I can see why you didn't have much room for steak with all those yummy veggies! How did you make your mixed veggie dish? Envious of the corn. Bought some at Aldi's today which I didn't think so yummy! Trying to type in the recliner with brown blob laying beside me and trying not push too many wrong buttons! Nancy

    1. Haha, Nancy, I think the brown blob stepped on your "enter" key! There's a lot of white space up there :-D

      Very simple mixed veggies. Dropped the snapped beans and carrot chunks into boiling water and cooked them, covered, until tender. Added the sliced yellow crookneck squash for about the last 3-4 minutes, until just barely tender. Drained and tossed with butter, salt and pepper. Not the same meal as last night, but a photo from a similar meal in 2010:

  11. Oh the corn. I want my corn to ripen up. I've got full sized ears right now, I just need those kernels to fill out. Though honestly anything from the garden would be good right now. I'm eating stored cabbage and carrots right now.

    1. Yes, the corn is one of the garden stars! Mr. Granny doesn't complain about all the corn I cook. Not like the broccoli ;-) I have just enough cabbage for maybe two more meals of coleslaw, so I'm hoping the next four heads I have in the garden hurry and mature.
