July 14, 2009: Annie's and Otto's Garden Dinner

I have to use all those green beans up some way, so Annie and Otto had a "garden dinner"........

....but look closely. See where the green beans are ending up? Notice the neat little pile of beans next to Annie's dish. Otto, on the other hand, is a typical guy. His beans are scattered all around. Maybe they were just saving the best for last, as they did eat all but one bean after they finished their meat.

Mr. H and I didn't have much of a "garden dinner" ourselves, but we did have one thing from the garden, because I needed a green pepper. Just look at this beauty!

We had a really delicious and pretty dinner tonight, but you'll just have to take my word for it as the phone rang just as I was heading outside with the plate in one hand and the camera in the other. It was a friend, calling from Pennsylvania, so I shoved the plate of food at Mr. H, and I grabbed a fork and ate from the serving dish, standing up, while conversing. I do wish I'd been able to get a photo, as it was a thing of beauty.

Tuesday's (kind of) Garden Dinner

Grilled Shrimp Kabobs with Green Peppers and Pineapple
*I marinated the raw shrimp in Yoshida's Sauce, then threaded them on skewers with chunks of green pepper (the only item on tonight's menu from the garden) and pineapple. I grilled them on the George Foreman grill and served them on a bed of....

Brown Rice with Broccoli Stir-fry Vegetables
*Just a bag of Success brown rice cooked according to package directions, mixed with a one-pound bag of frozen stir-fry veggies that were microwaved per instructions on the bag, tossed with a little Yoshida's.

Such a simple dinner, but so good and so pretty.

  1. That is one gorgeous pepper. Lucky dogs! Our old dog loved broccoli. He really went after it, so it makes perfect sense that they'd eat their beans up, even if they were saved for dessert.

  2. Stefaneener, they love raw green beans and carrots. Annie has been known to go into the garden and pull her very own carrot to snack on! They have recently shown a liking for yellow crookneck squash, too. Annie was licking out the grandbaby's sweet potato container the other day, so I'll bet she'll eat winter squash and pumpkin.

  3. That would be funny to see Annie harvesting from the garden :-) Our late little dog wouldn't touch anything veggie related. I just made kabobs the other day, chicken, onion, pepper & pineapple. The purple peppers are coming along nicely still and one now has a flower bud. I will be posting an update on them after my GBBD post tomorrow or I guess it is today now.

  4. Gorgeous pepper-how huge! And lucky lucky dogs...I haven't even had a green bean out of the garden yet, and you're so sick of em you're feeding them to the dogs.Sigh.

  5. I love the picky puppies. They're like my boy and don't like the different foods touching on the plate.

  7. Cute pups but Annie is particularly a sweetie!

The pepper was indeed a thing of beauty. Our night time temps have been too low to push our heat lovers into the high gear that yours are in. I hope it will warm up soon and we can play catch up with you. Meanwhile, I will content myself with admiring your peppers!

  8. That is funny. I was going to ask you if after eating beans would they go out and pick their own, but you answered it for me. My late dog used to eye the garden, but she knew she wasn't supposed to eat out of it. She was a pretty good dog that way. Sadly I could never get her to quit eating the bees. She loved harvest time though. I'd pick and trim the veggies and she would get trimmings. Carrots and cabbage were her favorites.

  9. That picture of your dogs is precious. The bell pepper was so big and nice. I have a couple of bells but none are big enough to eat yet. We love shrimp, any way you fix it and those kabobs sound wonderful.

  10. My goodness Granny - what big peppers you have!

  11. Dan, my purple peppers are still tiny plants, but I think I saw a blossom or two. They sure can't compete with the other peppers! My dogs just like green beans and carrots so far. They always follow me out to the garden when I pick the beans, and have probably reduced my harvest total by at least a half pound!

Sue, I wish I could share with you. I have a big bag of them in the fridge right now, so I told Mr. H we get green beans tonight..he sighed "Again?". Maybe I should freeze them.

    ********

Ribbit, I think that is the case. They won't touch their food if I mix brown rice in with it, but they will eat brown rice by itself! I never thought of that.....I need to keep the different foods separate.

Steve Ballmer, thank you! Welcome to my blog, and I won't even ask if you have anything to do with Microsoft :-)

KitsapFG, Annie is my sweetie. I love them both, but she's just extra special.

I'm so surprised the peppers are huge, but the tomatoes are still green. I've always had ripe tomatoes long before my peppers were big enough to pick. There were five or six peppers on that one plant that were that size! The poor thing was laying on its side and had to be staked upright.

    ********

Daphne, My dogs aren't allowed in the spring garden when things are so small they could be stepped on (or laid on). Now I leave the gate open, and they roam at will. Otto, however, has decided he can sleep on the empty side of the strawberry bed, where I have removed the onions. He might just get booted back out of the garden for good. Both of the dogs are fascinated with bugs/spiders, but their favorite trick is rolling on dead worms! At least the dead worms don't stink like dead birds and such!

    ********

Missy M, I love shrimp, too. And what other food has a self timer built right in? When it's pink, it's done! Albertson's had a sale last week, buy 2 pounds and get 2 pounds free, so I ended up with 4 pounds of shrimp in the freezer!

Desert Dame - the better to tease you with, my dear.

  12. Green beans + dogs. I love that. My Lab had a weight problem and was on a green bean diet for a long time (to supplement her food) and help her lose weight so I loooove to see dogs sucking down the green beans...ah fond memories.

Our German Shepherd? Won't touch them. He'll carry one around for awhile, but won't eat one. Same rings true for 99% of the things he runs across in life - including dog treats. He won't touch 'em.

  13. Kate, as you can see, Annie is way overweight, and Otto's not far behind. Funny thing is, neither eats a lot, and they are really picky. They each get one small roasted chicken thigh a day, with green beans and/or carrots. Sometimes I add a bit of brown rice, but I've recently stopped that because poor Annie just keeps getting broader (yes, her thyroid has been checked and is normal). I'm going to increase the beans and decrease the chicken, and introduce a "weight control" dry food.

Neither of my dogs will eat "treats", and refuse to touch most leftovers....they hate anything with sauce or gravy. I'm sure I'll end up passing on the new dry food to a dog that will actually eat it.

  14. WOW! Great pepper, Granny!!! After seeing your wonderful pepper, I'll be posting about my peppers--they'll make you laugh (and feel sorry for my poor plants lol).

  15. Momma_S, yours couldn't be any worse than my purple peppers. They're no bigger now than the others were the day I transplanted them into the garden, and the seeds were all started at the same time!

  16. That is just too funny with the puppies! LOL I haven't tried Toby (our Maltese) with a green bean yet, but he might eat it. He wants to eat anything that we're having.

Wow, the size of that bell pepper!!!

  17. Judy, green beans and pumpkin are really good for the dogs. I haven't tried Annie & Otto on pumpkin yet, but with all of those in the garden, they will be trying it soon. I did find out they absolutely love cooked parsnips! Annie also loves to lick out the grandbaby's sweet potato container, so she'll probably be a fan of winter squash.

Yes, I've never grown such HUGE bell peppers!
