The final tally for this garden season is now in. Following is a chart that compares 2010 harvest totals with 2009. Weights are rounded off to the nearest pound. Winning weights are shown in red, DNP means did not plant. You can click on the chart to make it larger.
2010 - 912 pounds..........2009 - 1073 pounds
All just supporting the fact that you're my hero.
ReplyDeleteLOL, Ribbit. I love you...you always make me smile :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing. Granny, do you have somewhere on the blog the total # of beds/square footage you have in your garden? I think I will talk about you with the gardening class I am working on for students.
ReplyDeleteAli, I have figured it out at around 400 square feet. It's a bit difficult when you figure in the pots and planters, and the spaces in the flower beds where I'm likely to stick veggies. That 400 sf is actual planted ares, not empty spaces and pathways. It may be a bit more now, I don't think I figured the area behind the shed in that figure, which is about a 4'x12' plantable area.
ReplyDeleteIt still amazes me, every time I see a total like this, how much we can grow in a relatively small space. I'm so glad I've started keeping track of mine. Besides that, it really makes me feel good!
ReplyDelete~~Lori
Wow-that's an impressive amount. I've never weighed my stuff, but maybe I should. I know while I'm harvesting , it never really feels like much, but the basement, the laundry room and the giant chest freezer are all stuffed, so I guess I got something!
ReplyDeleteYou had a HUGE increase in cukes. I don't think I could deal with that many!! You ARE a super-hero!!
Wow! I'm actually glad you didn't top last year's tomato numbers, I was getting worried about you drowning in tomato sauce last year!
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of weight for 400+ sqft. I usually figure that if I get one pound per cubic foot I'm doing pretty well. So what is your secret? How do you get twice as much as us normal people? You aren't some crazy scientist doing experiments in your basement are you? (Right now I'm not picturing you in your garden hat, but in Einstein hair.) Or maybe Annie is a magic dog and she knows that if you get too much from the garden you might feed her more. Hmm maybe that is it. I do remember seeing a photo of Annie in her superdog costume (better known as a pink hoodie). Can you tell it is raining here and I can't go outside to work off my energy by hauling dirt?
ReplyDeleteYou're my hero, too, even if I have to share my hero-worshipdom with Ribbit and all your other faithful readers. :)
ReplyDeleteI do have a follow-up question to henbogle. Did you plant each crop in approximately the same size area between 2009 and 2010? I'm just trying to understand if the pound difference between the two years for various crops is due to different success rates, or due to different area size dedicated to each crop, or a little bit of both.
Lori, I swore I wasn't going to weigh stuff this year, it's so time consuming, but I gave in. I don't want to weigh next year, either. But I'll probably give in again.

Sue, I had a huge DEcrease in cukes this year. I only grew 47 pounds compared to 102 pounds last year. The 42 pounds came from 4 plants in two kitty litter buckets, one of the buckets being a small pickling variety. The 102 pounds came from 6 plants in three buckets, and they were all the large slicing variety.

Erin, I don't think I composted or gave away as many tomatoes last year as I did this year. I still had so much stuff canned and frozen from last year. The tomatoes tasted better last year, too.
********
You know, Daphne, I really think the compost I buy in the spring makes a lot of difference. I bought a different mixture this year, and it was probably my worst garden ever....and I don't think I can blame the weather for that. Next spring I'll go back to using the dairy compost and see if things get better. I've always got a lot from a fairly small space, through intensive planting. And that 400 square feet doesn't count paths, only actual growing beds.

Thyme2, if this hero stuff keeps up, I'm making myself a Super Granny cape to wear in the garden!
