October 8, 2010: Seeds of Friendship & Sweets From the Sweet

Sometimes my readers make me feel so special :-D

I think Robin and Mr. H. know I must grow tomatoes, many tomatoes, regardless of what I say each year when I am inundated with their fruits. Robin made sure I would have a sweet cherry tomato next year, and sent a lovely card with seeds for Matt's Wild Cherry. Mr. and Mrs. H. will be filling the rest of my tomato garden with Russian Baby, Bloody Butcher, Cherokee Purple and Coastal Pride Orange! They will all be new varieties for me, as this year's Cherokee Purple turned out to be a very prolific, small, red tomato. I love the card they sent, too. I still have five unfinished birdhouses tucked away in the garden shed, so maybe the Backyard Birdhouses will get my creative juices flowing again.

Just look at the Maine sweets from Henbogle! Now how did she know I have had a passion for maple sugar candy since I was a small child? I have never tasted a candy made from mashed potatoes, but I have a feeling that, once sampled, Maine Needhams will become one of my favorites.

Thank you Robin, Mr. & Mrs. H. and Henbogle! It's so nice to have such good friends.

  3. Oh yum. When I thought of Maine treats my mind went to blueberries. But maple sugar candies are prefect. My husband and I only buy them when on vacation (like fudge and things like that), but oh do we love them.

And yes we all know how much you like having too many tomatoes. We remember from last year when you complained about too many and yet planted more this year. I'm sure we will have 100 plants next year. I love to watch you try to can them all. Deep down we all know you love it.

  4. Well, Daphne, I just gave away the last of my tomatoes, and all but 8 of the smaller peppers of that 17 pounds I just picked. I cleaned out my big freezer, and found about 4 gallons of peppers from 2009, along with several bags of roasted tomato sauce from 2009. I'll be growing one each of the new tomatoes next year, but hopefully no more, and as of now I'm planning on just four pepper plants. I have enough stuff canned and frozen to last me a lifetime!

  5. And to think, I thought about tomato seeds, but then thought, no, she's trying to cut back!

I am so glad you realized the needham is potato candy, as I discovered after it was too late I left the note out of the box. Now you know what to do with extra potatoes!

I hope you enjoy the treats from Maine. I couldn't fit a lobster in the box ;-)

  6. Dang it, Ali, I might like lobster even more than maple sugar candy!

I looked up the candy, and the first thing that came up was a recipe! Of course, now I'll have to make some. Anything with that much butter, chocolate and coconut has to be good.

  8. Our blogs motto is to "share with and learn from others" and boy have we learned at lot of valuable gardening tips from you Granny...really we have. It will be an honor to have some of our tomatoes growing in your garden, I hope they do well for you. I know that we are looking forward to growing the red eggplant and other seed that you so graciously shared with us.:)

    You're the best!

  9. Ah Granny, is there such a thing for you as too many tomatoes? I reckon not!

I really want to grow some tomatoes next year, but I'm a bit suspicious over growing them outdoors in the UK. It seems that you are guaranteed blight at some point.

I've evn reread an article on outdoor tomatoes that I skimmed in the spring, and it says that ultimately you'd better have a chutney recipe, because the blight will get you!

There must be answer - I just don't know what it is yet.

  10. You are very welcome Granny. Veggie Garden blogging wouldn't be the same without you. You were one of the first blogs that I read and my second follower. I hope that the tomatoes are as sweet as you are!!!

  11. By the way Granny, I stopped by the greenhouse after feeding and letting out the chickens this morning and took notice of all the potted peppers, even hot ones, that are slowly starting to change color. Thanks for inspiring me to grow so many extras in pots this year as it has been a huge success.:)
